CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER PORTFOLIO

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) Portfolio enables quality outcomes for students, staff and partners by delivering University-wide services and operational support to meet the organisation's evolving needs and strategic goals. The portfolio also works in partnership with teams across the University to drive innovation, transformation and improved performance, within and across functions. It is responsible for the University's budget and financial performance, and the management of its property and capital.

The COO Portfolio is comprised of six sub-portfolios covering all areas of our operations, including the newly established Operational Performance group. This has been established to drive and manage a program of operational improvement and service transformation, underpinned by contemporary business insights, data modelling, predictive analytics, digital tools, and service planning.

RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND COMMERCIALISATION

RIC is a specialist team dedicated to enabling the University's research and innovation mission working closely with our academic and professional colleagues, industry partners, funding and government agencies. We have a passion to see our academics and their collaboration partners succeed, achieve research excellence and translate their discoveries into real-world innovation and impact. RIC operates University-wide across all ten Academic Divisions and Chancellery. At a high level our capabilities include: - Proposal funding submission and post-award support including contracts and research accounting for a wide range of funders. Specialized services for larger schemes such as NHMRC, ARC, MRFF, CRCs, Breakthrough Victoria Fund and certain international programs. - Business development, intellectual property management and knowledge transfer mechanisms in partnership with industry and the investment community - Strategic relationship development with Industry partners, including Innovation Precincts - Research ethics, integrity, governance and quality - Research infrastructure asset management - Professional development programs for academic and professional staff

MELBOURNE CONNECT Melbourne Connect is a new initiative for the University to place the highest calibre research, industry, entrepreneurs, higher-degree student and other elite thinkers in a single purpose-built precinct. It is a new model for collaborative innovation within the STEM disciplines and is expected to become a collaborative hub for researchers and industry across Melbourne more broadly.

The people, place and program are designed to foster the type of collaboration that can expedite and amplify innovation. It is a project where all participants will be deeply engaged to find innovative solutions for our future challenges and enabled to contribute to the greater wellbeing of societies generally, in ways that are data driven and digitally enabled. The precinct is complex, integrating 3,000 knowledge workers (University and industry partners), Science Gallery Melbourne, Telstra Creator Space, co-working, accommodation, childcare, retail outlets, and significant shared amenity. It is developed and operated in partnership with a consortium led by

Lendlease (developer, builder and co-investor), and including Spotless (base building facilities manager), Urbanest (student accommodation operator) and GIC (co-investor).

ABOUT THE ROLE Position Purpose: The Senior Partnership Officer – Melbourne Connect is a member of the Research and Enterprise Development (R&ED) portfolio of RIC. R&ED supports the successful delivery of large, mission-focused complex, non-competitive and competitive grant schemes and major opportunities, as well as interdisciplinary, research and enterprise initiatives involving multiple parties, e.g. industry, granting bodies, advocacy groups and government. Major current focus areas include major grants schemes such as the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), CRC, ITRP and Centre of Excellence schemes and major bids and tenders; Melbourne Connect precinct development (and subsequent innovation precinct developments); the identification, establishment, growth and management of major strategic partnerships; and economic impact directed initiatives pursued jointly with government.

The role of the Senior Partnership Officer is to coordinate and deliver partnership services to commercial tenants within Melbourne Connect and create value for the University and tenant-partner. The Senior Partnership Officer is required to develop a detailed understanding of the business objectives of tenants,

4 develop and deliver service plans, and coordinate and curate collaboration and University of Melbourne linkage opportunities; facilitating strong co-location partnerships over the life of the tenant’s Melbourne Connect lease term and beyond.

The Senior Partnership Officer – Melbourne Connect delivers partnership services to the approximately 15 commercial leasing tenants of Melbourne Connect (located in small and large suites) to nurture and develop strong collaborative and revenue generating outcomes. Melbourne Connect reached practical completion in March 2021 with first occupancy by commercial tenants planned from June-July 2021. Partnership services commence at execution of the lease.

The Senior Partnership Officer will excel at building and maintaining productive relationships with stakeholders, has exceptional customer service skills, works with University and Melbourne Connect service owners to troubleshoot and resolve co-location experience issues, and mentors the Partnership Officer – Melbourne Connect. The Senior Partnership Officer supports tenant’s Key Account Manager to develop the Melbourne Connect Partnership Canvas and the tenant’s Partnership Plan. The Senior Partnership Officer has a high degree of initiative and is a self-starter comfortable with experimenting with new ways of doing things and working in new and rapidly evolving environments. They have subject matter expertise in digital technologies and/or STEMM disciplines, the commercialisation of research, and experience with design-thinking and other contemporary approaches to entrepreneurship. The incumbent demonstrates a highly collaborative approach.

Core Accountabilities: Reporting to the Director – Innovation Precincts (the Supervisor) and working collaboratively with the Research and Enterprise Development (R&ED) team, RIC, and Melbourne Connect Liaison Office, Faculty of Engineering and IT, Science Gallery Melbourne and Melbourne Entrepreneurial Centre teams, the responsibilities of the Senior Partnership Officer – Melbourne Connect may include, but are not limited to:

Deliver partnership services to the commercial tenants of Melbourne Connect • Proactively identify and propose business development opportunities from tenant interactions for the University and qualify and triage these to RIC business development, Advancement and Melbourne Connect Liaison Officer colleagues as appropriate, whilst maintaining coordination of the overall partnership experience for commercial tenants (known as ‘co-located partners’). • Support the University Key Account Manager and/or Melbourne Connect Business Development Manager to establish a Melbourne Connect Partnership Canvas for all commercial tenants of Melbourne Connect, and as required, other sponsors and members of Melbourne Connect. Support includes developing company briefs, undertaking external market analysis, internal capability assessment, preparing pitch decks and reports, and organising and recording meetings and workshops to establish, document and agree the Canvas using the RIC approved Canvas format. • Working directly with the tenant and under the broad direction of the University Key Account Manager for each commercial tenant of Melbourne Connect, develop and deliver a Partnership Plan for all tenants of Melbourne Connect, and as required, other sponsors and members of Melbourne Connect. Manage ongoing delivery of the Partnership Plan, ensuring all aspects of the Plan are delivered on-time and according to the parameters agreed with the tenant partner. • Undertake planned, proactive and opportunistic engagement and communication with tenant- partners to ensure timely and agreed levels of engagement are met and collaboration opportunities are fostered and optimised. • Collaborate closely with the Melbourne Connect Liaison Office to plan and facilitate the engagement of tenants with precinct and sponsorship opportunities. • Proactively identify and coordinate resolution of any matters causing service pain-points for Melbourne Connect tenant partners, working with the relevant University or Melbourne Connect services function and/or escalating issues as required.

In general • Provide mentorship support to the Partnership Officer – Melbourne Connect and contribute skills and experience to the Melbourne Connect partnership team, contributing to a community of practice for service excellence in university-industry collaboration support. • Contribute to the development of systems and process improvement. Utilise and contribute to OneCRM systems and other project management tools as required, and ensure all account and partnership related records are up to date monthly. Contribute to reporting on Melbourne Connect Partnerships to RIC and the Melbourne Connect Liaison Office. • From time to time, contribute to a deal team approach by the Research Enterprise Development team in support of strategic partners and mission initiatives. • Support commercial engagement culture change through promoting new ways of working with customers and clients. • Any other duties as directed by the Supervisor.

Selection Criteria: Education/Qualifications 1. The appointee will have: relevant tertiary qualifications and demonstrated experience and expertise or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training.

Knowledge and skills: 2. Subject matter expertise in digital technologies and/or STEMM disciplines, the commercialisation of research, and experience with design-thinking, UX and other contemporary approaches to project ideation, co-creation and entrepreneurship. 3. High level customer engagement expertise, with strong experience delivering customer service and project management using face-to-face, virtual technology and digital platforms. 4. Experience, understanding and effectiveness at working in the interface between academia, business/corporate and government and related sectors. 5. An enthusiastic and proactive approach to business development, with an eye for strategic growth opportunities. 6. High level interpersonal and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to represent the University to external stakeholders as appropriate, direct and influence others, and build and maintain effective and productive relationships with a wide variety of internal and external groups. 7. Has a high degree of initiative and is a self-starter and problem solver who is comfortable with experimenting and trying new ways of doing things. 8. Demonstrated excellence in complex project management and meeting deadlines with exceptional attention to detail.
