Yonatan Cohen, Congregation Beth Israel I remember that in Yeshiva, my Rebbe was once asked how his Rosh Hashanah was. He said, “I don’t know. Ask me next year!” Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are days of difficult personal accounting. Our rabbis referred to this as cheshbon ha’nefesh, the internal calculations and considerations of the soul. On Yom Kippur in particular, death weighs heavily on the bottom line. We remove our shoes as though we are in a state of mourning. We wear white recalling the white shrouds enveloping the deceased. The Yizkor service reminds us of the fragility of life, while the daunting words and melody of Unetane Tokef pound upon us. Who shall live and who shall die… The totality of our life seems to stream in one single direction and death is seemingly so stubborn. In this room, right now, many of us are struggling with questions pertaining to the ultimate meaning of life especially in light of its finitude. We are struggling to locate the endurance of our spiritual legacy. We wonder how and if our children or those whose lives we touched will continue to perpetrate our way of life, our vision, our mission. We struggle physically as well. Some of us are ill, some of us are not yet ill, we all know people who are sick. We struggle with health, with the shortness of life, with its fragility. 1 Through it all, we struggle with finitude – with the perceived limits of our narrative, our inability to foresee the future, to let go or to invest, to pull away or draw closer in.

It is customary at Jewish weddings to remember the deceased grandparents of the chassan and kallah. Considering our grandfathers’ shared histories and friendship, it seemed appropriate to record the stories of their lives in honor of our wedding. Chaim’s grandfather, Rabbi Mordechai Meir (“Mottel”) Bryski, was generally a man of few words. When pressed to speak, he pre- ferred to do it through song. Singing played a central role in his life. Be it the songs he grew up with, Chabad nigunim or the nigunim he would sing and compose during his daily prayers. His favorite was the Shir Hageulah, the Song of Redemption (see page 34).

    THE SEUDAH-FESTIVE MEAL The Chosson and kallah adjourn to a private room for a few moments of Yichud (privacy) where they share their first meal as husband and wife. Meanwhile the guests gather at the wedding hall for the feast and celebration. The emphasis is on entertaining the newlyweds. The community expresses their joy and support for the couple by joining in the celebration and dancing for the chosson and kallah. In accordance with Jewish tradition, men and women dine and dance separately. At the end of the meal, the “Grace After Meals” is recited and the Sheva brachos are repeated. For the next seven days, the couple is entertained by friends at similar joyous gatherings. The week of sheva brachos is a custom which originates from the wedding of Jacob and Leah which lasted seven days. At each festive meal this week, the sheva brachos will again be recited. TZEDAKAH-CHARITY You will notice on the tables a pushka (charity box). Everyone is asked to give some tzedakah on behalf of the chosson and kallah. The reason for this custom is that the world was created and continues to exist only in the merit of the mitzvos of Torah, prayer, and acts of kindness. The wedding is compared to an act of creation since its the beginning of a new existence for the new couple. Therefore, it should be characterized by the observance of these three “pillars” of creation, so that the couple will merit to build a home and family based on a strong spiritual foundation, which will, G-d willing, become an everlasting edifice.

As Vice and as Virtue Most people have mixed feelings with regard to that uncommon quality called frankness or candor -** and that is as it should be. It is something no doubt to be admired, and all too rare in human relations. And yet it can, in the wrong hands, be misused for the wrong purposes and prove dangerous and disruptive* On the one hand, frankness is based on emet, truth, and our tradition teaches that chotamo shel ha-kadosh barukh hu emet, that the very seal and inisgnia of G-d is truth. Frankness is a prerequisite for clear and uncomplicated human and social relationships. Candor, while it may momentarily be annoying, ultimately proves to be the best guarantee of honorable living. It engenders a greater degree of truthfulness on the part of others as well. "Frankness," said Emerson, "invites more frankness*" And on the other hand, it can be a tool of the smug, self-certain, and even the malicious who tyranize friend and foe alike by their disarming bluntness which goes by the name of frankness* Perhaps, then, in order to view the quality of frankness from a greater perspective, we ought to recall the ethics of Judaism as taught by Maimonides, one in which he gives us a philosophy of character. In general, Faimonides teaches, we should avoid the extremes of character and keep to the derekh ha-shem, the nway of G-d," which he also calls the shevil ha-zahav, the "golden path.11 In other words, one should generally follow the path of moderation, although in certain specific instances <bne may veer more towards fifi.
