Parshah Matot Summary (Matot — Bamidbar/Numbers 30:2-32:42 pg 900) Moses conveys the laws governing the annulment of vows to the heads of the tribes of . War is waged against Midian for their role in plotting the moral destruction of Israel, and the Torah gives a detailed account of the war spoils and how they were allocated amongst the people, the warriors, the Levites and the High Priest or Kohen Gadol. The tribes of Reuben and Gad (later joined by half of the tribe of Manasseh) ask for the lands east of the Jordan as their portion in the Promised Land, these being prime pastureland for their cattle. Moses is initially angered by the request, but subsequently agrees on the condition that they first join, and lead, in Israel’s conquest of the lands west of the Jordan. Parshat Massei Summary (Masei — Bamidbar/Numbers 33-36:13 pg 918) The Parashah reports on the wanderings of Israel from the time that they left Egypt to the time they reached the borders of . Forty encampment places are named—beginning with Rameses in Egypt and ending with the Plains of Moab by the at Jericho. Soon they would be entering the land promised them by G-d. Moses warns Israel that, when they settle in Canaan, they must destroy all of the pagan temples of the Canaanites. Israel must take no part in the Canaanite idol worship. If Israel failed to comply with this command they would run into great trouble. The Sidrah gives a detailed description of what were to be the boundaries of the . Moses appointed ten Israelite leaders, under the supervision of Eleazar and , to deal with the distribution of land among the tribes. The , whose members were to serve as the religious teachers of the , was to be distributed among special residential cities, with land attached to each, spread among the territories of the other tribes. There were to be about forty-eight of these Levitical cities. Further, the Sidrah reports on the designation of cities of refuge, of which there were to be six, in various parts of the land. Should a man kill another by accident, he would seek refuge in these specially assigned cities from those who might want revenge. In these cities a man was safe until his case could be tried. Bamidbar (the Book of Numbers) ends with laws concerning the inheritance of property by women. Previously, the daughters of Tzelafchad proposed to Moses that since their father died without leaving male heirs, that they should inherit their father’s portion. Thus the laws of inheritance are amended once and then a second time that in order for an inheritance to remain valid, women should marry anyone of their choice within their own tribe! Thus the daughters marry within the Tribe of Manasseh, so that the estate which they inherit from their father should not pass to the province of another tribe. In Today’s Haftarah( Jeremiah 2:4-28; 3:4; 4:1-2 pg 1193) In the Haftarah, Jeremiah, born near in 660 B.C.E., brought his prophetic messages to his Judean brothers, and warns them of the difficult times ahead. Jeremiah pleaded with the people of Judea to do away with idol worship and to return to the service of our one G-d. He asks of them—why do they continue to distance themselves from their true G-d? Do they not recognize that their one true G-d elevated them from slavery to freedom, was their guide in the wilderness, and brought them to the lands that surround Carmel which have sustained them for centuries?
