DIVISION AMONG THE ( 22) Lesson # 27 REFERENCE: (The ) BOOK OF STUDY: Joshua Season of Study: Season of Bringing the Savior into the world HISTORY The book of Joshua belongs to the history section of the Old Testament. Joshua is embraced in the Season of “Bringing the Messiah into the world.” Joshua records the history of the Children of from the death of the great leader and lawgiver Moses, to their entering the land of (the Promised Land), and until a great portion of the land was possessed by them as a people. The Children of Israel, during Joshua’s life, did not possess all the land promised them by God. Joshua, the minister to Moses, is credited with the authorship of this book bearing his name. The name Joshua is of Hebrew origin and means “Jehovah is Salvation.” Joshua is one of the two (2) men who departed Egypt with Moses and

1 was blessed and honored to cross into the Promised Land. The other was the man . All other men who departed from Egypt perished in the wilderness because of disobedience. The ATS Bible dictionary says of Joshua, “His last grand convocation of all Israel, at Shechem, and his solemn address to them and renewal of their covenant with God form the worthy close of a life on which in the sacred records no blot rests.” The book can be divided into three (3) sections: The defeat of the Canaanites, chapters 1 – 12; The Division of the land, chapters 13 – 21; and The Death of Joshua, chapters 22 – 24. INTRODUCTION From the birth of the nation of Israel in Abraham until the Messiah (Jesus) came into the world, the greatest threat to the Children of Israel as a people was the division within, not the enemies from without. God controlled the enemies from without; however, they had to control the enemies from within. After Joshua had broken the strength of the armies of Canaan and the land was portioned out to each tribe, we witness the threat of the division among the people. Moses had portioned out the land in , on the other side of Jordan, to the tribes of Rueben, Gad, and the half , with the condition that those men of fighting age in these tribes would accompany the other tribes crossing Jordan and fight alongside of these tribes until the land of Canaan was taken. These men would then be able to return to their possession on the other side of the Jordan in Gilead. When the fighting was completed, Joshua released these men to return to their possessions in Gilead. These men rejoiced in the goodness of God by building an altar of thanksgiving. This act of worship was interpreted by the other tribes on the Canaan side of Jordan as being an act of rejecting the Almighty God, and they rose up against the Gilead tribes (Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh), to go to war. This type of division slowed the Messiah’s coming into the world and would plague the nation of Israel throughout its history. THE PRINTED TEXT

2 Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, 2 And said unto them, ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you: 3 Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day but have kept the charge of the commandment of the Lord your God. 4 And now the Lord your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore, now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side Jordan. 5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. 6 So Joshua blessed them and sent them away: and they went unto their tents. 7 Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in : but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them, 8 And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren. 9 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses. 10 And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.

3 11 And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel. 12 And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war against them. 13 And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, the son of Eleazar the priest, 14 And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was a head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel. 15 And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying, 16 Thus saith the whole congregation of the Lord, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the Lord, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the Lord? 17 Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord, 18 But that ye must turn away this day from following the Lord? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the Lord, that to morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel. 19 Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the Lord, wherein the Lord's tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the Lord, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the Lord our God. 20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? And that man perished not alone in his iniquity.

4 21 Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel, 22 The Lord God of gods, the Lord God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the Lord, (save us not this day,) 23 That we have built us an altar to turn from following the Lord, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the Lord himself require it; 24 And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, in time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the Lord God of Israel? 25 For the Lord hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the Lord: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the Lord. 26 Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice: 27 But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the Lord before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the Lord. 28 Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you. 29 God forbid that we should rebel against the Lord, and turn this day from following the Lord, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the Lord our God that is before his tabernacle. 30 And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them.

5 31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the Lord is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the Lord: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the Lord. 32 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again. 33 And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt. 34 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the Lord is God. EXPLORING THE PRINTED TEXT I. RELEASED FROM THE WAR – (Joshua 22: 1 – 9)

Once Joshua had broken the military might and unity of the armies of Canaan, and divided the land among the tribes, the fighting men from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh who had been assigned portions of land on the Gilead side of Jordan by Moses, were released by Joshua to return home to their families and possessions. Upon assigning them their portions of land on the Gilead side of Jordan, Moses had received a promise from these tribes (Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh), for their fighting men to accompany the other tribes to the Canaan side of Jordan, and fight with them until the land of Canaan was in their possession.

Joshua said to these men whose land was assigned them on the Gilead side of Jordan, and who crossed over to aid and assist in the conquest of Canaan, once Canaan was possessed, “And now the Lord your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore, now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side Jordan.”

6 The fighting men from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh were released from their obligation by Joshua and they returned to their homes over Jordan.

II. REJOICED IN WORSHIP – (Joshua 22: 10)

The feeling that accompanies “winning” is an awesome feeling. When winning is the result of divine intervention; when one knows that it has been by the hand of the Almighty God that you enjoy and experience victory, it leads one to the act of “worship.”

Having fulfilled their obligation to the other tribes and having been released from their obligation by Joshua, the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh returned to their possession on the other side of Jordan. Elated from the victories they had enjoyed, and rejoicing over their return to their families, before crossing over Jordan, they built an altar to the Lord who had demonstrated for them His majesty and power in battle. They wished to say “Thank You” to Jehovah and for the altar to serve as a memorial between the tribes on the Gilead, and the Canaan side of Jordan.

The text reads, “And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.”

The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh wished not to be forgotten in the coming years by future generations, in that they too (even though being on the Gilead side of Jordan), were the Children of Abraham, Isaac, and . They were a portion of the covenanted people of God through who the Messiah would come. This altar that they erected on the Canaan side of Jordan would be a reminder of this truth for future generations.

III. RESPOND OF THE TEN TRIBES FOR WAR – (Joshua 22: 11 – 12) The writer of Proverbs says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7).

7 The incident taking place between the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh who had portions of land assigned them by Moses on the Gilead side of the Jordan, and the tribes on the Canaan side of Jordan demonstrates the truth of this proverb.

Once the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh builds the altar on the Canaan side of Jordan as they return to their possessions, the Canaan tribes, misunderstanding the intentions of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh, moves to go to war against them.

The text reads, “When the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war against them.”

The Canaan tribes interpreted the actions of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh as an act of blasphemy. Remembering the act of Achan when they took the city of Jericho, and Achan’s thievery that brought punishment upon the whole of the Children of Israel, the tribes of Canaan wished to exact punishment against these tribes to stop what they felt was to be a certain punishment from the Almighty.

However, before they moved to war, they wisely chose a prince from each of the tribes in Canaan to go and converse with the Gilead tribes. These princes went asking the question, “What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the Lord, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the Lord?

When the princes reached the heads of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh they discovered in their discussions and conversation that they where highly mistaken.

With the Children of Israel not fully understanding their purpose as the nation through who the Messiah would come, and the impact His coming would have upon the world, the seeds of discord and division were

8 forever present among them. These seeds would in the future divide the nation, and Israel would become two!

IV. REUNION AMONG THE TRIBES – (Joshua 22: 13 – 34)

War among the tribes was diverted at that instant. The princes from the Canaan tribes, in collaboration with the tribes of Rueben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh, came to an understanding.

The Gilead tribes explain to the princes, “Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice: 27 But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the Lord before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the Lord. 28 Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you. 29 God forbid that we should rebel against the Lord, and turn this day from following the Lord, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the Lord our God that is before his tabernacle.”

An understanding was reached between the tribes, and peace remained among the tribes on the Gilead side of Jordan and the tribes on the Canaan side of Jordan.

The outcome of the meeting is captioned in this way by the writer: “And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again. 33 And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.

9 34 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the Lord is God.” LIFE APPLICATION A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.
