Who Associates cultivating the Walmart culture and spirit by dressing like Sam Walton Where Distribution Center (DC) 6020, Brooksville, Fla. Why When you’re a Walmart associate, who better to model yourself after than Sam Walton? That was what prompted the managers at DC 6020 to dress up like our founder for the week of May 5–9. Human Resources Manager Jeff Redman contacted The Walmart Museum in Bentonville, Ark., to order 70 of the trucker hats Sam famously wore and then passed them out for the managers to wear. It was part of the DC’s Sam Would Have Been Proud campaign to ensure the culture Sam established remains intact. “We do our best to represent Sam’s values and to honor and remember his name,” Jeff says. “And this week is a time to reflect on that.” Mike Sackett (left) and Tim King, both area Go to walmartworld.com/ managers at DC 6020 in Brooksville, Fla., participate dresslikesam to see a slideshow of in the Sam Would Have Been Proud campaign. Walmart1Percent.Org WALTON FAMILY “PHILANTHROPY”: A Distraction from the Walmart Economy Americans believe in the power of charitable giving. Eighty-eight percent of American households give to charity, contributing more than $2,000 per year on average.1 Despite their charitable inclinations, most American families, acting on their own, lack the financial resources to make a significant impact on the problems facing our society. The Walton family, majority owner of Walmart, is a notable exception. As members of the richest family in the United States, the Waltons have $140 billion at their disposal—enough wealth to make a positive mark on the world and still leave a fortune for their descendants. The Waltons certainly wish to be seen as a force for good. Their company claims to help people “live better” and the Walton Family Foundation mission statement speaks of “creating opportunity so that individuals and communities can live better in today’s world.”2 But that mission statement seems ironic, given that many of the most acute challenges facing American families in 2014 could rightfully be viewed as symptoms of our “Walmart economy,” characterized by rising inequality and economic insecurity.

For the exclusive use of Q. Mays, 2020. 9-718-481 REV: JANUARY 21, 2020 DAVID COLLIS ANDY WU REMBRAND KONING HUAIYI CICI SUN Walmart Inc. Takes on Amazon.com At the start of 2018, Walmart faced critical decisions about its future as e-commerce continued to explode. Walmart just lost its long-held crown as the most valuable retailer in the world to online leader Amazon. With Amazon’s recent acquisition of Whole Foods for $13 billion, Amazon moved aggressively into the offline world to challenge Walmart in its biggest business, grocery. Walmart was not standing still, making moves like buying Jet.com for $3 billion in 2016. While Walmart’s U.S. e- commerce revenues grew to $11.5 billion in 2017, there was no debate in Bentonville, AR: Walmart remained far behind. The question for Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and Walmart.com head Marc Lore was how to respond to its most aggressive competitor ever (Exhibits 1a and 1b).1 Amazon The Early Years (1994–2001) Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 to exploit the Internet, still a relatively nascent technology. He determined that selling books online was most promising, because the number of titles available was greater than even the largest brick-and-mortar store could stock. Bezos and his wife drove west to start “Earth’s Biggest Bookstore” in Seattle, WA. Amazon offered 1 million titles for sale on its opening day in July 1995. Next year, the company had over 2.5 million book titles for sale, with revenue doubling every quarter (Exhibit 2).

  • Walmart's Contested Expansion in the Retail Business
Walmart’s Contested Expansion in the Retail Business: Differential Accumulation, Institutional Restructuring and Social Resistance Joseph Baines PhD Candidate, Department of Political Science, York University, Toronto Email: [email protected] Submitted: October 25, 2012 Abstract This paper offers an analysis of Walmart’s contested expansion in the retail business. It draws on, and develops, some aspects of the capital as power framework so as to provide the first quantitative explication of the company’s power trajectory to date. After rapid growth in the first four decades of its existence, the power of Walmart appears to be flat-lining relative to dominant capital as a whole. The major problems for Walmart lie in the fact that its green-field growth is running into barriers, while its cost cutting measures seem to be approaching a floor. The paper contends that these problems are in part born out of resistance that Walmart is experiencing at multiple social scales. This resistance helps to explain why Walmart is nearing what appears to be an ‘asymptote’ – a distributional limit that the company might not be able to pass. Walmart’s power trajectory may give us clues about the future limits on the power of dominant capital as a whole. Key words: capital accumulation; corporate power; resistance; Walmart; capitalization; asymptotes. 1 Introduction By some measures Walmart is the world’s largest corporation. The retail giant has garnered more annual revenues than any other business for seven of the last ten years. And with 2.2 million employees, it has about as many people in uniform as the People’s Liberation Army of China.
