Most Reverend Paul Peter Rhode (1915-1945) Perhaps the letter sent to Bishop Stanislaus Bona on March 5, 1945 by John Goodland, Jr., Mayor of Appleton, two days after the death of Bishop Paul Rhode, captured the deep love and respect so many people had for the sixth Bishop of Green Bay after serving so faithfully in the diocese for nearly 30 years: We realize to the fullest extent the benefits which your Diocese and the entire community have derived from the work of this Christian-minded and public- spirited man. The warm and personal feelings for inspiration which he gave to many hearts by his kindly and unselfish life will be a solace to many in years to come. Likewise, on the joyous occasion of Bishop Rhode’s Silver Jubilee of coming to the Diocese of Green Bay, Monsignor Joseph Marx, Vicar General and toastmaster for the event, shared: ….We, the diocese of Green Bay, are like a bee hive. When Bishop Rhode came to us at the behest of the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Benedict XV, there was also among us a joyous acclaim. For when a bishop is with us, we have life, we have union with the Church. In this memorable talk, he compared the coming of the Bishop Jubilarian to the Diocese of Green Bay as “a renewal of the spiritual nuptial vows pronounced first on March 3, 1868.” The personal episcopal shield of Bishop Rhode featured the motto “Vias tuas, Domine, edoce me” (Your ways, O Lord, teach me thoroughly). It guided him to do what was needed for the diocese.

The Greek-Catholic Discourse of Identity in the Inter-War Period: The Relation between the Nation and People’s Religious Confession Ciprian Ghişa ”Babeş-Bolyai” University Abstract: The Greek-Catholic Discourse of Identity in the Inter-War Period: The Relation between the Nation and People’s Religious Confession. This paper aims to analyze the question of the confessional identity, focusing on one of its main constitutive elements: the relation between the nation and people’s religious confession. The national identity and the confessional one have numerous common characteristics, influencing each other more or less depending on the historical evolution of events. These aspects are more profound in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-confessional environment, as otherness is one of the strongest factors that defines and strengthens the confessional as well as the national identity. This was also the case of the Greek- Catholic Church in Romania, in the inter-war period, taking into consideration its new status after the Union of 1918: a minority church in a country with an Orthodox majority. Its relation of otherness with the Romanian Orthodox Church also influenced its relation with the state and therefore it determined also the structure and the intensity of its discourse of identity. Among the most important themes of this discourse we can mention: the Greek-Catholic Church is the church of the forefathers; this Church, its faith and its believers are Romanian; the Union with Rome brought the Romanian people a lot of benefices

  • Martyred Romanian Bishops Fought Communist Regime
Martyred Romanian bishops fought communist regime The memory and witness of Romania’s martyred bishops are a reminder that Christians are called to stand firm against ideologies that seek to stifle and suppress their cultural and religious traditions, Pope Francis said. On the last leg of his visit to Romania, the pope June 2 celebrated a Divine Liturgy during which seven Eastern-rite Catholic bishops, who died during a fierce anti-religious campaign waged by the communist regime in Romania, were beatified. “These pastors, martyrs for the faith, re-appropriated and handed down to the Romanian people a precious legacy that we can sum up in two words: freedom and mercy,” the pope said. According to the Vatican, an estimated 60,000 people filled Blaj’s Liberty Field, while some 20,000 people followed the liturgy on big screens set up in various squares around the city. For Eastern Catholics in Romania, the field – located on the grounds of Blaj’s Greek Catholic Theological Seminary – is both a symbol of national pride and sorrow. It was in Liberty Field where, during the 100th anniversary of the Romanian nationalist revolution that communist authorities formerly dissolved the Eastern-rite Romanian Catholic Church. One of the newly beatified bishops, Bishop Ioan Suciu, the apostolic administrator of Fagaras and Alba Iulia, refused to appear at the event, which was perceived by his flock as a sign that they were called to remain steadfast in their faith and follow the path of persecution and martyrdom. Thirty years after the fall of communism, the sun shined brightly and solemn hymns echoed over the field that was once the site of the Eastern Catholic Church’s darkest period.

  • SPRING 2020 2020 Annual Report Pre-Proof Highlighting Illinois State Scholars Alumni Updates Letter from the President Celebrating Growth in Our School Community
VISION PROGRESS AND PLANS AT ST. LAURENCE HIGH SCHOOL SPRING 2020 2020 Annual Report Pre-Proof Highlighting Illinois State Scholars Alumni Updates Letter from the President Celebrating growth in our school community Dear Friends of St. Laurence, St. Laurence is proud of its most recent accomplishments. We live our mission and provide a Catholic education to our students. Most importantly, we embrace our values of compassion, courage, excellence and community. How do we do this? During a time of transformation, there is one constant – growth. After another successful entrance exam, St. Laurence is on track to have sustainable growth by accepting 250 incoming freshmen per year. In addition, since we stand up for what is right, we continue to minimize tuition cost increases and remain one of the most valuable Catholic high schools within the Archdiocese – nearly $2,000 more affordable than any of our peer institutions. Transformation requires courageous leaders. These leaders rallied the community and remained brave when confronted with uncertainty. I want to thank our entire community as we finish our third year of a successful co-educational transition. In the next two years, we will grow to over 900 students with over 40% of them being female! As we pursue excellence in all endeavors, our academic growth is off the charts! Our teachers and students embrace a growth mindset, which leads to achievement. Academic programs are producing students that improve an average of 15 national percentile points from entrance exam to ACT. In 2021, we will become one of three Catholic high schools in Illinois to be an International Baccalaureate World School upon completing our candidacy phase.
