VISION PROGRESS AND PLANS AT ST. LAURENCE HIGH SCHOOL

SPRING 2020 2020 Annual Report Pre-Proof Highlighting State Scholars Alumni Updates Letter from the President Celebrating growth in our school community

Dear Friends of St. Laurence,

St. Laurence is proud of its most recent accomplishments. We live our mission and provide a Catholic education to our students. Most importantly, we embrace our values of compassion, courage, excellence and community.

How do we do this? During a time of transformation, there is one constant – growth. After another successful entrance exam, St. Laurence is on track to have sustainable growth by accepting 250 incoming freshmen per year. In addition, since we stand up for what is right, we continue to minimize tuition cost increases and remain one of the most valuable Catholic high schools within the Archdiocese – nearly $2,000 more affordable than any of our peer institutions.

Transformation requires courageous leaders. These leaders rallied the community and remained brave when confronted with uncertainty. I want to thank our entire community as we finish our third year of a successful co-educational transition. In the next two years, we will grow to over 900 students with over 40% of them being female!

As we pursue excellence in all endeavors, our academic growth is off the charts! Our teachers and students embrace a growth mindset, which leads to achievement. Academic programs are producing students that improve an average of 15 national percentile points from entrance exam to ACT. In 2021, we will become one of three Catholic high schools in Illinois to be an International Baccalaureate World School upon completing our candidacy phase.

These accomplishments would not be possible without the constant support from our community. Alumni, faculty, parents and students all share a common understanding and remain unified with our vision to achieve national recognition for our non-traditional, project- based learning curriculum, and attain sustainable growth.

We have much more to achieve, and with continued growth comes continued opportunities. St. Laurence is preparing for the future with master planning and new initiatives to remain at the forefront of Catholic education. Please join us and invest in your alma mater. Your investment will have an immediate impact on the lives of our students, your future fellow alumni. They are ready to lead and take on the world!

Thank you and Go Vikings!

Joseph A. Martinez ’99 President, St. Laurence High School

Coming in as a freshman, I knew that I had the potential and the tools to be an exceptional student, even if my Entrance Exam score didn’t necessarily show it. St. Laurence helped me meet my true potential by providing the support and resources to bring out the best in me, and it resulted in me taking tremendous strides to where I am today. I am thriving academically, my ACT score is in the top 10% nationally and I am confident that I am ready for college and my career that follows.”

Growing the Arts

The fine arts program at St. Laurence continues its steady ascent, as every year more and more students participate in our expanding list of offerings. Our Vikings have displayed a passion for imagination, and the result of this has been a thriving community of creatives within St. Laurence.

One of the biggest stories of the year was the drama program, which took a huge step this year in its development as “The STL Players” performed their first musical since the program’s rebirth. Now in its third year, the group took on an ambitious challenge and selected “Little Shop of Horrors” for their winter performance. After months of hard work, the final product left everyone in the audience in awe that this was the group’s first musical.

Almost immediately following the performance, our thespians RIley Stone and Aidan Edwards act out a scene in “Little Shop of Horrors.” turned their attention to contest season. Auditions for the Group Interpretation were at the end of the first semester, and preparation has already begun for their three public performances in March. The culmination of this will be the Sectional Performance on March 21 at Oak Lawn High School, where the group will be looking to improve on their 6th place finish in last year’s competitive debut.

Sophomore Band Member Receives Prestigious Honor

St. Laurence sophomore Anna Janczy (Burbank, St. Patricia) became the first St. Laurence student in years to qualify for the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) District 1 Senior Band. Anna had to audition against hundreds of trumpet players, playing several prepared and sight-read musical excerpts to qualify Graysen Stewart-Woolery, Afton Vanek and Lizbeth Ortiz break out a singing number for a spot to perform with the senior level band. Anna performed in for the school musical. October at Elmhurst College with other highly talented high school musicians, many of which were upperclassmen. This is a great honor for not only Anna, but for our entire band program.

New Mural Brings Character to the Halls

Led by alum and art teacher Joseph Josue Mora ’12, our Public Art class commissioned their first mural in our halls. As part of the class, students observed different forms of public art and learned about its importance in the community. Students then sketched several different ideas, finally selecting one that highlights the school’s new shield. The final result is a stunning statement piece that injects life and school pride to the main hallway right outside of the E-wing.

Soccer Goes to State Finals

Boys soccer is in the midst of its most successful run in program history, consistently rated among the best teams in the southland. This year, however, the team took their success to new heights, finishing fourth in state after advancing to the State Finals for the first time in program history.

Led by second-year Coach Kyle Boekeloo, the team captured a program record for wins in a season for the second straight year. For his efforts, Coach Boekeloo earned several postseason accolades, including the Lawless Award for most outstanding coach in the League and the Daily Southtown Coach of the Year.

The outlook for next year is bright, as the team will return seven starters. Three of the returning players were also named to ChicagolandSoccer.org’s All-State watch list for 2020. At the lower levels, the program has developed some outstanding young talent, with 7 freshmen seeing varsity minutes at some point this past season. We look forward to this rising program showing that they are here to stay!

Boys and girls golf had strong showings at Regionals, as seniors Robbie Moore and Tony Zarnowski advanced to Sectionals on the boys side and freshmen Mary McGuire and Madeline Davis both advanced to Sectionals on the girls side. Mary also took first place at the GCAC JV Tournament.
