ARTICLE Norwegian Archaeological Review, iFirst, 2012 ‘I am the Walrus’: Animal Identities and Merging with Animals – Exceptional Experiences? TORILL CHRISTINE LINDSTRØM Archaeological materials from various times and places give us many examples of identity attributed to animals and of merging of identities between humans and animals. We tend to regard these phenomena as different from our modern understanding of ourselves, animals, plants and objects as discrete ontological classes. Accordingly, archaeology explains and explores these phenomena in relation to what they implied and meant in their particular cultural contexts. However, these phenomena also share certain cross-cultural and trans-temporal similarities, pointing beyond cultural ‘uses’ (processual) and ‘meanings’ (post-processual) of animals. This observation demands the employment of a wider, more inclusive, theoretical stance (multi-theoretical, multi-methodological, eclectic) to be explained. I illustrate with examples from various periods (Palaeolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, pre-classical and classical Greece, Roman Empire, Migration Period and Viking Period). I claim that characteristics of both human and animal nature (‘things in themselves’) can contribute to explaining the experiences of animal identities and of merging phenomena. Both phenomena connect to perceptions of, interaction with and relationships withanimals.Myargumentsarebasedonresearchonhumanandanimal psycho-endocrinology, brain and behaviours (cognitive, emotional and social) and ethology. Abstract This dissertation explores the relationship between animal and human motifs on early Anglo-Saxon (AD 450–650) artefacts and the individuals with whom the objects are buried, as well as the wider communities to which they belong. A sample of sites was taken from the two historical regions of East Anglia and Wessex, compiling data such as object type and material, sex and age of individuals, and the human and animal motifs depicted. From a total of 32 sites, 5560 graves were analyzed; of these, 198 graves from 28 sites contained artefacts with anthropomorphic and/or zoomorphic decoration. Anthropological and material culture theories of totemism, shamanism, animism, and object agency were employed in the interpretation of results to consider the symbolic meaning of anthropomorphically- and zoomorphically-decorated objects, and how they may have reflected the social organization and ideologies of communities in early Anglo-Saxon England.

This version of “history” credits Spanish conquistadors and other early European explorers with reintroducing the horse to the Americas and to her Indigenous Peoples. However, many Native Nations state that “they always had the horse” and that they had well established horse cultures long before the arrival of the Spanish. To date, “history” has been written by Western academia to reflect a Eurocentric and colonial paradigm. The traditional knowledge (TK) of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, and any information that is contrary to the accepted Western academic view, has been generally disregarded, purposefully excluded, or reconfigured to fit the accepted academic paradigm.

    ANNOTATION For Zhumatayev Rinat Serikovich Doctoral dissertation «Horse in the customs and rituals of the ancient and medieval population of Kazakhstan (Genetic and cultural aspect)» prepared to earn the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in archeology and ethnology. General description of the dissertation. The dissertation paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the meaning of a horse in rites and rituals of the ancient and medieval population of Kazakhstan based on archaeological and ethnographic data. Relevance of the research topic. None of the animal world has played such a big role in the history of civilizations as a horse. The highly developed equestrian nomadic civilization with its rich material and spiritual values was largely associated with the horseman who had grown together with him into a single whole. For several millennia, the horse was not only a means of transportation, but also a particularly revered animal among the nomads. The special role of the horse in the economic, political and military areas of the life of nomads led to a special attitude to it in the sphere of their spiritual culture, in particular, in religious ideas. As the role of the horse grows in the system of traditional economic life of the ancient nomads, it becomes an essential element of the ritual and mythological system among many peoples of Eurasia. The earliest traces of worshiping a horse among the population of the Kazakh steppes are known from materials of the Botai and Tersek antiquities, which characterizes the initial stage of the formation of a horse cult with complex and multi-stage cult-ritual activities in the Eneolithic.

There has also been much concentration on the domestication of the horse and its proliferation through the ‘horse cultures” in those regions. Apart from the work of Rommelaere1 in the early 1990’s, interest in the Egyptian horse has been limited to short articles or sections of other works dealing mainly with chariots, where mention of the driving force behind the chariot – the horse has been brief. This work addresses this omission by reviewing the faunal, iconographic, textual and archaeological evidence for the horse in New Kingdom Egypt.
