A key contributing factor behind this limited study is the apparent absence of equine skeletal remains from early historic archaeological contexts. Here, we present a multi- disciplinary analysis of a horse skeleton recovered in Lehi, Utah, originally attributed to the Pleistocene. Reanalysis of strati- graphic context and radiocarbon dating indicates a historic age for this horse (cal AD 1681–1939), linking it with Ute or other Indigenous groups, whereas osteological features demonstrate its use for mounted horseback riding—perhaps with a nonframe saddle. DNA analysis indicates that the animal was a female domestic horse, which was likely cared for as part of a breeding herd despite outliving its usefulness in transport. Finally, sequentially sampled stable carbon, oxygen, and strontium isotope values from tooth enamel (δ13C, δ18O, and 87Sr/86Sr) suggest that the horse was raised locally. These results show the utility of archaeological science as applied to horse remains in understanding Indigenous horse pastoralism, whereas consideration of the broader archaeological record suggests a pattern of misidentification of horse bones from early historic contexts. Stuart9 and Adrian M. Lister 10* Understanding extinction events requires an unbiased record of the chronology and ecology of victims and survivors. The rhi- noceros Elasmotherium sibiricum, known as the ‘Siberian unicorn’, was believed to have gone extinct around 200,000 years ago—well before the late Quaternary megafaunal extinction event. However, no absolute dating, genetic analysis or quantita- tive ecological assessment of this species has been undertaken. Here, we show, by accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating of 23 individuals, including cross-validation by compound-specific analysis, that E. sibiricum survived in Eastern Europe and Central Asia until at least 39,000 years ago, corroborating a wave of megafaunal turnover before the Last Glacial Maximum in Eurasia, in addition to the better-known late-glacial event. Stable isotope data indicate a dry steppe niche for E. sibiricum and, together with morphology, a highly specialized diet that probably contributed to its extinction. We further demonstrate, with DNA sequencing data, a very deep phylogenetic split between the subfamilies Elasmotheriinae and Rhinocerotinae that includes all the living rhinoceroses, settling a debate based on fossil evidence and confirming that the two lineages had diverged by the Eocene. As the last surviving member of the Elasmotheriinae, the demise of the ‘Siberian unicorn’ marked the extinction of this subfamily.

Abstract This dissertation explores the relationship between animal and human motifs on early Anglo-Saxon (AD 450–650) artefacts and the individuals with whom the objects are buried, as well as the wider communities to which they belong. A sample of sites was taken from the two historical regions of East Anglia and Wessex, compiling data such as object type and material, sex and age of individuals, and the human and animal motifs depicted. From a total of 32 sites, 5560 graves were analyzed; of these, 198 graves from 28 sites contained artefacts with anthropomorphic and/or zoomorphic decoration. Anthropological and material culture theories of totemism, shamanism, animism, and object agency were employed in the interpretation of results to consider the symbolic meaning of anthropomorphically- and zoomorphically-decorated objects, and how they may have reflected the social organization and ideologies of communities in early Anglo-Saxon England.

The knowledge has been gathered from interdisciplinary sources taking into account recent archaeogenomic and spatial analysis research. The process of domestication is described, and different domestication centres are compared to the domestication needs and opportunities on the American continents. Human colonization of the American continent is considered. Important domestication centres on the North and South American continent are described. Dogs that colonized the American continents together with people and horses that arrived during the European colonization are also considered. The analysis of the American megafauna that lived on the continent during the first colonization of Homo sapiens showed that the big extinction occurred due to climate change and overhunting. Comparing the evolutionary process of domestication between Afro-Eurasia and America we found that there was no intentional domestication in areas peripheral to the original domestication centres in the Americas. Also, diversification of the domesticated animal purpose in the Americas is limited to dogs. Los siguientes taxones son reportados por primera vez para el área de estudio: cf. Stockoceros sp., Tetrameryx sp., Glyptotherium aff. G. cylindricum y Cuvieronius aff. C. hyodon. Además, se describe nuevo material fósil perteneciente a Cervidae, Equus cf. E. conversidens y Sylvilagus sp. Con base en esta información, la fauna local Santa Cruz Nuevo está conformada por 14 órdenes, 30 familias, 36 géneros y 19 especies, referibles a las Clases Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves y Mammalia. Abstract For the purpose of supplementing and improving the Mexican Pleistocene vertebrate fauna knowledge, the present study includes new records of the taxonomic composition of the following Rancholabrean locality: Santa Cruz Nuevo local fauna, Puebla. Have large undigested pieces of food in her manure? Look older than the seller told you he or she was? Well, its time to talk about equine dentistry… Anatomy Let’s first talk about anatomy (ugh!). Horses teeth are very different from human teeth due to the continual eruption of the teeth through the gums throughout the horse’s life. The teeth are worn down by chewing. When you lift a horse’s lips, you see the incisors, these are the teeth used to grasp and shear grass and hay. The teeth that are not easily seen are the molars and premolars (cheek teeth). These teeth grind up food into small pieces. Like humans, horses have deciduous (baby) and permanent teeth. A general time frame for the eruption of a horse’s first (deciduous) teeth is: 1st incisors (central) birth-6 days 2nd incisors 6 weeks 3rd incisors 6 months Premolars birth-14 days The adult (permanent) teeth come in at the following ages: 1st incisors (central) 2 ½ years 2nd incisors 3 ½ years 3rd incisors 4 ½ years Canines 4-5 years Wolf teeth 6 months 2nd premolars (cheek teeth) 2 ½ years 3rd premolars 3 years 4th premolars 4 years 1st molars 9-12 months 2nd molars 2 years 3rd molars 3 ½ years Knowing the eruption times of the teeth can give you a good guideline of how old a horse is. Another landmark that can help you age a horse is the Galvayne’s Groove.
