SPORT & SOCIETY The Summer Olympics and Paralympics through the lens of social science www.bl.uk/sportandsociety Sports history in the British Library: selected titles Any analysis of sport, sporting events and sports governance must inevitably take into account the historical events which underpin them. For sports researchers, the British Library has an unrivalled collection of resources covering all aspects of the subject and in many different media, from books describing sporting events, to biographies and autobiographies of grass roots and elite athletes; coaching manuals; sport yearbooks and annual reports; directories of athletics clubs; sports periodicals; newspaper reports; and oral history interviews with sports people, including Olympians and Paralympians. These materials cover a long period of sporting activity both in Great Britain and elsewhere in the world. Some early materials As a glance at the earliest editions of the British Museum Library subject index show, the term ‘sport’ in the 18th century (and for much of the nineteenth) usually referred to blood sports. Nevertheless the existence of such headings as Rowing, Bowls, Cricket, Football, and Gymnastics in these early indexes point to a longstanding role for sport -as currently understood - in British social life. As was the case in ancient times, sports might originate as forms of preparation for war (from 1338, when the Hundred year’s war with France began, a series of English kings passed laws to make football illegal for fear that it would consume too much of the time set aside for archery practice); but they could also represent the natural human desire for friendly competition, so that alongside the jousting of the elite, games like bowling, stool ball and football could hold important places in the lives of ordinary people. -

class wargames Class Wargames ludic Ludic subversion against spectacular capitalism subversion Why should radicals be interested in playing wargames? Surely the Left can have no interest in such militarist fantasies? Yet, Guy Debord – the leader of the Situationist International – placed such importance on his class invention of The Game of War that he described it as the most significant of against his accomplishments. wargames Intrigued by this claim, a multinational group of artists, activists and spectacular academics formed Class Wargames to investigate the political and strategic lessons that could be learnt from playing his ludic experiment. While the ideas of the Situationists continue to be highly influential in the development of subversive art and politics, relatively little attention has been paid to their strategic orientation. Athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events that involve competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and race walking. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most commonly competed sports in the world. Organised athletics are traced back to the Ancient Olympic Games from 776 BC, and most modern events are conducted by the member clubs of the International Association of Athletics Federations. The athletics meeting forms the backbone of the modern Summer Olympics, and other leading international meetings include theIAAF World Championships and World Indoor Championships, and athletes with aphysical disability compete at the Summer Paralympics and the IPC Athletics World Championships. Etymology The word athletics is derived from the Greek word "athlos" (0șȜȠȢ), meaning "contest" or "task." Initially, the term was used to describeathletic contests in general ± i.e. sporting competition based primarily on human physical feats. In the 19th century in Europe, the term athletics acquired a more narrow definition and came to describe sports involving competitive running, walking, jumping and throwing. This definition continues to be the most prominent one in the United Kingdom and most of the areas of the former British Empire. Furthermore, foreign words in many Germanic and Romance languages which are related to the term athletics also have a similar meaning. In contrast to this, in much of North America athletics is synonymous with athletic sports in general, maintaining a more historic usage of the term. -

NOTES ON THIS INDEX This Index lists the most important articles that have been published in White Dwarf from issue 68 to issue 251. There are several points that I would like to make about this Index. • The Index only lists the main articles published in each issue, it does not list the Games Workshop News, Mail Order or What’s Happening at the GW Stores (as features in these articles will be out of date and largely irrelevant). • From Issues 110 onwards all of the articles are categorised according to which game they are relevant to, there is a column for Warhammer 40,000 (commonly referred to as WH40K) articles, a column for Warhammer Fantasy Battle (referred to as WHFB or just Warhammer), one for Various Games (all of the other games WD features), one for Terrain articles (just terrain, not painting guides) and one for Miscellaneous Articles and Battle reports. For issues 102 and earlier there are only three columns. One for Various Games that are featured (including Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Fantasy Battle) one for Roleplay Games like Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (commonly referred to as WFRP) and lastly, one for Miscellaneous Articles and Battle reports. This is because, back then, there wasn’t always a WH40K and/or WHFB article. There was however, a plethora of other games produced by other companies as well as lots of Roleplay games that are just never seen now. If things carry on as they are, I might have to change the columns from Issues 248 onward to just include just WH40K, WHFB and Miscellaneous Articles, because that’s what White Dwarf seems to be completely dedicating itself to these days… • Since Games Workshop re-releases games every so often (generally Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Fantasy Battle), articles about such games are only relevant to the edition of the game that was around at the time when that issue was printed.
