By Lynn Rosellini From Reader’s Digest January 2007 A Real Adventure Let's do something different," Monica Glenn said to her fiancé, William Zea, shortly after he proposed. "Let's honeymoon in the jungle." Monica, an American from California, had met William in Arequipa, Peru, where she was teaching English in an elementary school. The two sang in a choir at the local university. She was a soprano. William, who was working toward a professional degree in industrial engineering, was a tenor. The romance bloomed to the strains of the haunting Spanish folk song "Te Quiero" ("I love you"). Their wedding, on August 21, 2005, was picture-perfect. Monica swept down the aisle of the old Peruvian church in a handmade gown, clutching a bouquet of melody roses and beaming at her family, who'd flown in from California to be there. Two days later, the newlyweds rattled along a winding coastal road on a 14-hour bus ride to Lima, spinning with excitement. A 27-year-old with a sweep of shoulder-length brown hair, Monica had always been an adventurer. After college, she joined the Peace Corps and taught English in a rural village in China. Still eager to explore new cultures, she found a teaching position -- and William -- in Arequipa. As the bus bumped along, Monica flipped through a guidebook, reading about the Peruvian rain forest, one of the most biodiverse places on earth. "I hope we see some monkeys," she said to William. -

Images are produced from the best available original document Report BYG DTU R-021 2001 ISSN 1601-2917 ISBN 87-7877-076-9 Executive summary This summary describes the results of a Ph.D. study that was carried out in the Energy Planning Group, Department for Civil Engineering, Technical University of Denmark, in a three-year period starting in August 1998 and ending in September 2001. The project was funded by a research grant from the Danish Energy Research Programme. The overall aim of this project is to investigate the linkages between energy use, life style and environmental impact. As a case of study, this report investigates the future possibilities for reducing the growth in greenhouse gas emissions from commercial civil air transport, that is passenger air travel and airfreight. The reason for this choice of focus is that we found that commercial civil air transport may become a relatively large energy consumer and greenhouse gas emitter in the future. For example, according to different scenarios presented by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), commercial civil air transport's fuel burn may grow by between 0,8 percent a factor of 1,6 and 16 between 1990 and 2050. The actual growth in fuel consumption will depend on the future growth in airborne passenger travel and freight and the improvement rate for the specific fuel efficiency. -

There were also a number of severe floods in the US and across Europe and Asia, and a record high number of weather events in the US. The strongest was Hurricane Matthew, which became the first Category 5 storm to form over the North Atlantic since 2007, and which caused the largest loss of life – more than 700 victims, mostly in Haiti – of a single event in the year. Another expansive, and expensive, disaster was the wildfire that spread through Alberta and Saskatchewan in Canada from May to July. … leading to the highest level of overall In total, in sigma criteria terms, there were 327 disaster events in 2016, of which losses since 2012. 191 were natural catastrophes and 136 were man-made. Globally, approximately 11 000 people lost their lives or went missing in disasters. At USD 175 billion, total economic losses1 from disasters in 2016 were the highest since 2012, and a significant increase from USD 94 billion in 2015. As in the previous four years, Asia was hardest hit. The earthquake that hit Japan’s Kyushu Island inflicted the heaviest economic losses, estimated to be between USD 25 billion and USD 30 billion. -
