Located in the north-east of the Iberian peninsula, it is formed by a large variety of landscapes that are the result of highly diverse geography. On the one hand the Pyrenees, with peaks of up to 3,000 metres, which define the northern part of the country, with a valley aimed at the Atlantic, the Val d’Aran, which has maintained its own culture, language (Aranese) and institutions. On the other hand, more than 500 km of Mediterranean coastline alternating different scenery from north to south, and which ends with the Delta de l'Ebre. Also inland is a territory of diverse crops and stock breeding, with a tradition strongly linked to these products. The capital, Barcelona, founded 4,000 years ago, has turned its cosmopolitan spirit into a hub of exchange and influences from all continents. This diversity of sceneries results in a wide variety of ingredients: excellent fish and shellfish, fruit, exquisite vegetables, top quality meats and waters that deserve international recognition. In addition to all of these products, there is a real tradition of Catalan cuisine, with remarkable leading products already famous in mediaeval times. In the final years of the 20th century, the Catalan chefs gave added value to the raw materials and achieved recognition around the planet. The Roca brothers, Ferran Adrià and Carme Ruscalleda are names engraved in fire on the universe of haute cuisine. The wines deserve their own chapter, as the country started out as an international supplier of wines in Roman times. Today, Priorat is served in the best glasses of the planet and following the example of the pioneers, the Catalan producers have wagered on the quality and promotion of their products, which have grown exponentially. So this is a small country accessible by train, car, bicycle, on foot and even on horseback, which offers enormous perspectives for enjoying the scenery, the wine and the gastronomy. All that remains is to decide and embark on an exciting journey of the senses to Catalonia. This thesis explores the norms, practices, and experiences that conditioned urban belonging in Late Medieval Barcelona. A combination of institutional, legal, intellectual and cultural analysis, the dissertation investigates how citizenship evolved and functioned on the Barcelonese stage. To this end, the thesis is structured into two parts. Part 1 includes four chapters, within which I establish the legal and institutional background of the Barcelonese citizen. Citizenship as a fiscal and individual privilege is contextualised within the negotiations that shaped the limits and prerogatives of monarchical and municipal power from the thirteenth to the late fourteenth centuries.

Estat de la qüestió Carles Padrós* Resum En aquest estudi s’ha realitzat un estat de la qüestió de les vies i camins antics del que avui és la comarca d’Osona. Cal tenir present la importància del coneixement d’aquestes vies de comunicació a l’hora d’estudiar antics assentaments o zones d’hàbitat dins l’Ausetània ibèrica, romana o posterior, ja que sense aquestes no es podrien relacionar els assen- taments amb el seu entorn més proper o llunyà. En definitiva les vies i camins antics resulten de gran importància per entendre un espai des d’un anàlisis macro del territori. With its ‘Rambles’, Barcelona is ranked the most popular city to visit in Spain and it now attracts some 7.5 million tourists per year. Barcelona has a typical Mediterranean climate. The winter is relatively mild and the summer is hot and humid. The rainy seasons are the once in between autumn and spring. There are very few days of extreme temperature, heat or cold. Every 24th September, Barcelona celebrates it’s annual festival, La Mercè – corresponding to the day of its patron saint. It comprises of some 600 events, from concerts and all kinds of local, cultural attractions including the human tower building, els Castellers, erected by groups of women, men and children, representing values such as solidarity, effort and the act of achievement. It underwent major changes from its origins in the 11th century until the 16th century, when its evolu- tion peaked and a prototype was reached for Catalonia as a whole. For this reason, in the subsequent centuries the model did not change, but building elements were added to it in order to adapt the home to the times. Catalan farmhouses are a historical testimony, and their changes and enlargements always reflect the needs of their inhabitants and the technological possibilities of the period. National identity and symbols in Catalonia and 1 Spain In this paper, after an initial discussion about what identity means and how to measure it, I intend to review some studies and events in Spain in which identity issues arise. The conclusion will be reached that identities in Spain, in regard to people’s relationship with Spain itself and with Catalonia, are by no means shared, and the level of both stereotyping and prejudice, on the one hand, and of collective insecurity (even “self-hatred”) on the other, are, I claim, higher than in consolidated nation-states of western Europe, with the partial exceptions of the United Kingdom and Belgium. Let me from the outset say how honoured I am, in having been invited to deliver this paper, to follow in the footsteps of such outstanding Catalan academics as Mercè Ibarz, Antoni Segura, Joan F. Mira, Marta Pessarrodona, Miquel Berga … and those before them. The idea of dedicating what up till then had been the Fundació Congrés de Cultura lectures to the memory of Joan Gili (Barcelona 1907 - Oxford 1998) was an inspiration. Unlike some earlier Memorial lecturers, however, I was fortunate enough to have a special personal relationship with him and, of course, with his wife Elizabeth.
