Epigtoaphic Bulletin for Greek Religion 1996 (EBGR 1996) The ninth issue of the BEGR contains only part of the epigraphie harvest of 1996; unforeseen circumstances have prevented me and my collaborators from covering all the publications of 1996, but we hope to close the gaps next year. We have also made several additions to previous issues. In the past years the BEGR had often summarized publications which were not primarily of epigraphie nature, thus tending to expand into an unavoidably incomplete bibliography of Greek religion. From this issue on we return to the original scope of this bulletin, whieh is to provide information on new epigraphie finds, new interpretations of inscriptions, epigraphieal corpora, and studies based p;imarily on the epigraphie material. Only if we focus on these types of books and articles, will we be able to present the newpublications without delays and, hopefully, without too many omissions.

Synoikism, Urbanization, and Empire in the Early Hellenistic Period by Ryan Anthony Boehm A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Emily Mackil, Chair Professor Erich Gruen Professor Mark Griffith Spring 2011 Copyright © Ryan Anthony Boehm, 2011 ABSTRACT SYNOIKISM, URBANIZATION, AND EMPIRE IN THE EARLY HELLENISTIC PERIOD by Ryan Anthony Boehm Doctor of Philosophy in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology University of California, Berkeley Professor Emily Mackil, Chair This dissertation, entitled “Synoikism, Urbanization, and Empire in the Early Hellenistic Period,” seeks to present a new approach to understanding the dynamic interaction between imperial powers and cities following the Macedonian conquest of Greece and Asia Minor. Rather than constructing a political narrative of the period, I focus on the role of reshaping urban centers and regional landscapes in the creation of empire in Greece and western Asia Minor. This period was marked by the rapid creation of new cities, major settlement and demographic shifts, and the reorganization, consolidation, or destruction of existing settlements and the urbanization of previously under- exploited regions. I analyze the complexities of this phenomenon across four frameworks: shifting settlement patterns, the regional and royal economy, civic religion, and the articulation of a new order in architectural and urban space. The introduction poses the central problem of the interrelationship between urbanization and imperial control and sets out the methodology of my dissertation. After briefly reviewing and critiquing previous approaches to this topic, which have focused mainly on creating catalogues, I point to the gains that can be made by shifting the focus to social and economic structures and asking more specific interpretive questions.

It is mentioned as “Eski İstanbul” or “Eski İstanbolluk” in Pir-i Reis’s “Kitab-ı Bahriye”. According to Pir-i Reis, the city known as “Troy” by the Greeks, was formerly called “Troas” or “Troad” by the Miletians. The city, which has been completely abandoned to its own fate after the 19th century, is nowadays defined as the city of healing waters known as “Kestanbol Hot Springs”. Our study is about the historical character of the ancient region of the ancient Kestanbol, known as the rich hot water springs, and its extant healing practices. Kestanbol hot springs is a healing resource that preserved its function and importance throughout the Ancient, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. It can be seen that its chemical properties today are very well preserved by looking at the reports of its analysis made in Paris, France 123 years ago. It has been proven that Kestanbol hot springs, which can be utilized with different cures, is effective in gynaecological diseases related to infection, rheumatic diseases, arthritis, some bone tuberculosis, lymphadenopathy in kids, upper respiratory tract and lung diseases.

Considering the primary importance of these historical sources, it is astonishing how little attention has been paid to the way they have been edited by Meritt, McGregor and Wade-Gery in The Athenian Tnbute Lists (ATL) I-IV from 1939-1953 and by Meritt in Inscnptiones Graecae (IG I3) 254-291 from 1981 during the last several decades.1 This negligence on the part of contemporary scholars, both ancient historians and, more surprisingly, also Greek epigraphists, stands in sharp contrast to the central place the lists take in academic articles, monographs and history books dealing with Greek history of the fifth century BC.

  • Economic Changes in the Early Hellenistic Kingdoms of Macedonia
Economic Changes in the Early Hellenistic Kingdoms of Macedonia and Thrace By Dylan Townshend A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Department of Classics University of Manitoba Winnipeg Copyright © 2018 by Dylan Townshend Abstract The end of the fourth century B.C. saw large-scale political overhauls with powerful monarchies replacing the former polis-centred Greek world. With these political changes came economic changes. Evidence around the Greek world at this time shows expanding number and shifting roles of market officials, the foundation of urban centres, and changes in land distribution. The kings, starting with Philip II, played significant roles in many of these developments. Macedon and Thrace, however, offer less evidence for such changes than other regions. New archaeological evidence, however, of amphoras produced near ancient Mende shows a clear difference between earlier practices of organizing amphora production and those practices from the late fourth century. The changes in amphora stamping show an increase in personal accountability and complexity of organization thereby providing substantial detail to the more general evidence for economic change Macedonia and the Chalkidike. i Acknowledgements I would first like to thank my thesis advisor Dr. Mark Lawall for giving me the opportunity to write this thesis. His knowledge, guidance, and feedback have been invaluable for completing this work. I would also like to thank him for his patience throughout this process and for always encouraging me towards completion. My deepest gratitude also goes out to Dr.

  • Boehm-City and Empire.Indd 6 O E H M - C I T Y
Introduction Sometime between 311 and 306 bce, Antigonos the One-Eyed compelled the polis of Skepsis to join in the foundation of a new coastal metropolis, Antigoneia Troas, along with several other major cities of the region.1 Situated in the rich agricultural basin of the Skamandros River, at the foot of Mount Ida in the interior of the cen- tral Troad, Skepsis was roughly sixty kilometers (thirty-seven miles) from the urban center of Antigoneia along modern routes. Th e city, which had identifi ed as Ionian since its incorporation of settlers fl eeing the destruction of Miletos in 494, unwillingly joined the union alongside its hated neighbor across the Skamandros, the Aiolian polis Kebren.2 Antigonos’s synoikism was designed to consolidate his hold on the region in the wake of the peace of 311, as the rival heirs of Alexander’s empire took advantage of the cessation in hostilities to stabilize their emerging territorial kingdoms and prepare for the next round of confl ict. Th e terms of this famous peace are most fully known from a fragmentary copy of a letter from Antigonos to Skepsis, in which he announces the settlement and professes to assent to the less palatable conditions of the agreement because he “was ambi- tious” (philotimesthai, l. 21) to secure the freedom and autonomy of the Greeks in his lifetime.3 Th e vaguely worded settlement was formalized through oaths requir- ing the Greek cities under Antigonos’s control to abide by its terms. Th e letter 1. Strabo 13.1.52. For a full discussion of the synoikism, see ch.

  • The Fiscal Politics of Pergamon, 188-133 B.C.E
“The Skeleton of the State:” The Fiscal Politics of Pergamon, 188-133 B.C.E. By Noah Kaye A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology University of California-Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Emily Mackil Professor Erich Gruen Professor Nikolaos Papazarkadas Professor Andrew Stewart Professor Dylan Sailor Fall 2012 Abstract “The Skeleton of the State:” the Fiscal Politics of Pergamon, 188-133, B.C.E. by Noah Kaye Doctor of Philosophy in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology University of California, Berkeley Professor Emily Mackil, Chair In 188 B.C.E., a Roman commission awarded most of Anatolia (Asia Minor) to the Attalid dynasty, a modest fiefdom based in the city of Pergamon. Immediately, the Roman commissioners evacuated along with their force of arms. Enforcement of the settlement, known as the Treaty of Apameia, was left to local beneficiaries, chiefly the Attalids, but also the island republic of Rhodes. The extraction of revenues and the judicious redistribution of resources were both key to the extension of Attalid control over the new territory and the maintenance of the empire. This dissertation is a study of the forms of taxation and public benefaction that characterized the late Attalid kingdom, a multiscalar state comprised of many small communities, most prominent among them, ancient cities on the Greek model of the polis. It argues that the dynasty’s idiosyncratic choices about taxation and euergetism help explain the success of the Attalid imperial project. They aligned interests and created new collectivities.

Copyright THE COINAGE AND HISTORY OF ACHAIION IN THE TROAD* Aneurin ELLIS-EVANS** Résumé.
