Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Study with Professor Edwin Bryant

A Bath Iyengar Yoga Centre Event Yoga Sutras Study with Edwin Bryant Bath Edwin received his PhD. In Indic languages and Cultures from Columbia University. He taught Iyengar Yoga Hinduism at Harvard University for three years and is presently the Professor of Hinduism at Rutgers University. He has received numerous awards and Centre fellowships, published six books and authored a number of articles on Vedic history, Yoga and the Krishna tradition. As a yoga practitioner for 35 years, a number of them spent in India studying with Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Study traditional teachers, Edwin strives to combine academic scholarship and rigour with sensitivity towards traditional knowledge systems. In addition to his academic work Edwin teaches workshops on the Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita and Hindu Philosophy at with Professor Edwin Bryant Yoga Studios throughout the USA. This is his first such workshop in the UK. In 2009 his translation and commentary on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali was published (North Point Press) with a foreword by BKS Iyengar. This seminar will consist of a close reading of Patanjali’s original text. Attention will be paid to the pre-modern commentaries, thus exposing participants to the traditional understanding of classical yoga. NOTHING PURIFIES LIKE KNOWLEDGE THE MATTOO CENTER FOR INDIA STUDIES presents God in the Vedanta Tradition Professor Edwin Bryant Rutgers University Monotheism is usually characterized as a development exclusive to the Abrahamic traditions. This talk will problematize this stereotype, by considering the ways in which the various Vedanta traditions have construed the notion of a supreme Creator God. The Vedanta traditions all accept the notion of Isvara, a personal creator God, and correlate this Being with Brahman, the highest Truth expressed in the ancient Upanishads, the oldest mystico-philosophical texts in ancient India. They differ as to whether this personal Being is the primary ultimate expression of Brahman, or a secondary Truth derived from a still higher impersonal Being. This talk will examine these understandings of Isvara, and explore how the differences are rooted in the Upanishads themselves. Wednesday, October 28, 2015, 6 P.M. BRYANT North Point Press, 2009 REBECCA WEISMAN© he first time I met Edwin Bryant Twas at a Yoga Teacher Training in 2006. When I walked in the room he was seated cross-legged dressed in traditional swami gear, his dhoti wrapped neatly around his legs and the bag for his tulsi japa beads dangling from his wrist. When he opened his mouth to speak to us aspiring yogis on the matter of Yoga Philosophy, a difficult assignment indeed, his level of comprehension on the subject was immediately evident. His language was clear and concise with a willingness to go as deep as the student’s questions required. His dedication to the subject was obvious as his eyes, set behind wiry spectacles, would light up and become animated at the slightest question. That first weekend he lectured to us for hours, revealing a stamina and tenacity that I’ve come to understand as his de facto mode of operation. While he did not hide his personal practice as a bhakta, devoted to worshipping Krishna, he was easily able to discuss the finer subtleties of other traditions: jnana and raja yoga, Vaisista and Advaita Vedanta and all the major schools of Indian thought. It became quite clear that Bryant was equally comfortable with acting the part of scholar, speaking to Western minds with varying degrees of cognitive dissonance with the material, as he was with infusing his own practice with devotion and worship.

This seminal first millennia text repeatedly employs the Sanskrit word “īśvara” to refer to a presiding divinity, the nature of which has been contested for centuries. In contrast to the abundance of modern interpretations that depreciate the status of “God” in Classical Yoga, I argue that the īśvara of the Pātañjala Yogaśāstra (sūtras and bhāṣya) carries an eminence comparable to that of Lord Kṛṣṇa of the Bhagavad Gītā. In short, “God” means “Supreme God” for Patañjali, regardless of the philosophical complications that may result from the admission of a totalizing divinity. This argument is evidenced through a historical analysis of the word “īśvara”, a close reading of its role in the Pātañjala Yogaśāstra, and a juxtaposition with relevant verses from the Bhagavad Gītā.

Chapter 6 Is Yogic Enlightenment Dependent Upon God? Heather Salazar From submission to God comes the perfection of samadhi. patañjali1 In yoga, many may take one path as a key in order to experience self- realization while others take another path, but I say that there is abso- lutely no difference between the various practices of yoga. iyengar2 Within contemporary Western culture, yogic philosophy is often touted as spir- itual but not religious, and some modern incarnations of it have excluded God completely from yoga’s metaphysics. In most discussions of yoga in the West today, for example, the liberation of the true Self (Purusa) from the mind (chit- tam) and the practice of non-attachment (vairagyam) have become secular. It is through focused contemplation (dharana) and meditation (dhyana) that samadhi, enlightenment and the liberation of the mind is attained. Though these seemingly secular methods of contemplation and meditation are strong- ly supported in Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras, the authoritative ancient text on yogic philosophy, modern discussions often ignore other sutras that clearly expound on the connection in yoga between the self and the Divine (Isvara). Westerners often mistake yoga’s non-religiosity to mean that it is non-theistic. However, this is a misnomer as Indian culture and yoga have been largely theistic. One need not read very far in the Yoga Sutras to find that Patañjali says: “[Samadhi is attainable] from devotion to the Lord. The Lord is a special soul.
