v INTRODUCTION

AgeneraldissatisfactionwithmodernlifehereintheWesthasresultedinagreatly increasedinterestinEasternspiritualityandculture.Manyintoday’sWesternworldwantto transformtheirrationalandanalyticculture—aculturethatappearstoholdnohopeofcreating

Utopia—intoanemotionalandsyntheticone.ForthatpopularWesternculturehasbecome dilutedwithmanyaspectsofEasternculture,includingEasternmusic,TVdrama,film,and especiallyEasternmysticism.Resultsincludethe“NewAgemovement,”religiouspluralism,a rejectionoftraditional,andforasteadilyincreasingpercentageofthepopulation,a fascinationwithandadevotiontoanancientgenusofHinduismknownas“Yoga.”

WesterncultureintheTwentyFirstCenturyremainspragmatic.Formost,healthand prosperityarebeloved,consideredtheonlymeaningfulbarometersofsuccessand, faroutweighingtheintangiblebenefitsthatmayormaynotaccompanyandobjective .Manychurchesaresimilarlyworshiping,andarenowwillingtolookatnovel

,”choosingtoviewthemasagiftfromGodthatcanaidintheirdevelopmentand popularity.TheseinnovativeWesternchurchesareintroducingtotheircongregationsdifferent formsofEasternmysticism,includingYoga,whichsomeregardasanewtooltoassistwith programs.Indeed,ChristianYogaprogramsareincreasinglypopularwith

Westernchurchleaders,andtheirmembers. 1

ManyobserverswhoprefertopracticeabasedformofChristianity,i.e.orthodox

Christians,havebecomealarmedatthegrowingnumberofthosewhoalsoidentifythemselvesas

ChristianswhohavebecomedeeplyinvolvedwiththepracticeofYoga.PopularChristianyogis

(teachers)areproducingYoga,DVDs,andseminarsforcuriousChristians,andteaching

Thepurposeofthispaperistoprovidebiblicallybasedanswerstotheseseriousquestions.

Thebelowstudyisdividedintofourmainparts.ChapteroneisconcernedwithYoga’s ancestry,andwillfocusontheancientHinduoriginsofmodernYogapractice.Abrieflookat

IndianhistoryandseveralsacredHindutextswillrevealthemeaningandpurposesofYoga.

ChaptertwoexaminesthesocioculturalreligiousthatYogahasbecome.

ThepurposesandprocessesthathavecausedEasternYogatomigratetotheWesternworld— especiallytoAmerica—willbesurveyed.Thischapterwillalsolookattheinfluenceofpopular

Hinduyogis,includingiconslikeMohandasGandhi,andVivekananda.Chaptertwo discussesotherfeaturesofpopularHinduculturethathaveattractedgreatintheWest, includingIndianmusicandmovies,theEasterninfluenceonTwentiethCenturyAmericanHippies, theHareKrishnaandTranscendentalMeditationmovements.Inaddition,thischapterwill

Chapterthreeconcernstheorigins,meaning,anddetailedmethodsofChristianYoga.The chapterlooksatspecialYogabreathingpractices,andmysticmeditativeprayer,especiallyasthey contrastwithbiblicallybasedmeditativeprayer.SeveralexamplesofChristianYogamethodsare alsodiscussedinthischapter.

ThelastchapterisanapologeticforbiblicallybasedChristianity.Anyunderstandingof thescripturesthatisderivedfromatraditional,i.e.historicalgrammaticalapproachto makesitabundantlyclearthatthepracticeofYogaisinirremediableconflictwith thepracticeoforthodox(Biblebased)Christianity.Intheopinionofthiswriterandmostother

ChristianTraditionists,Christianswoulddowelltorejectemotionalismandmysticism,andhold onfirmlytotheBiblicaldoctrinesandChristianpracticesthatarerootedsecurelyinhistoricaland objective.

ResourcesaccessedforthisprojectincludeseveralLibertyUniversitylibrarybooks;inter libraryloanmaterials;the“NetLibrary;”aswellasnumerousotherreliableInternetsources.

Becauseislimitedandthefocusofthisthesisiselsewhere,thehistoryofHinduismwillbe onlybrieflysummarized.Additionally,theexamplesofChristianYogapresentedbeloware intendedtoberepresentative,notexhaustive.

TheNewAgemovement,whichincludesthephenomenonofYoga,isopenlychallenging thedoctrinesandpracticesoftraditional,orthodoxChristianity.Theoperatingthesisofthispaper isthattheproperresponsetotheseandsimilarchallengesistobefoundinGod’sWord,theBible.

3 CHAPTEROE

THEORIGIOFHIDUYOGAPRACTICE

YogapracticehasbecomeaverypopularactivityasaneverincreasingnumberofWestern

Yogapractitionersuseittoimprovephysicalhealthandforpsychological.Yoga, however,wasnotoriginallydesignedforphysicalandpsychologicalbenefits.Yogawasdesigned, trained,andspreadtopromoteaparticulartypeofEasternreligionandspirituality.AuthorRonald

Enrochobserved“Yoga’sassumesthatthebasicproblemisneitherbiological normoralbutmetaphysical.” 5Contrarytopopularopinion,Yogaisnotasimplestretching technique,butacomplex religiouspractice .Thischapterwillsurveysomeofthecharacteristicsof

Hinduism,uponwhichYogawasfounded.Inaddition,thetruemeaningoftheterm“Yoga”will bediscussed,whichaccordingtosomeHindusacredtextsinvolvesliberationfrombondage.

Finally,itwillbeobservedthatthemainpurposeofvariousformsofYogaisunionwithGod throughsacredtexts,andthroughpracticalYoga.

Yoga:TraceabletoAncientHinduism

Hinduismisseveralthousandyearsoldandholdsthedistinctionofbeingthemostancient oftheworld’sliving. 6Hinduismisacombinationofbeliefsandinstitutionsthathave appearedoverthecenturies.However,eventhoughthereligionhasbeenaroundforthousandsof years,thereisnofirmdefinitionofHinduism. 7IncontrasttoChristianity,Hinduism“doesnot haveasinglefounder,aspecifictheologicalsystem,asinglesystemofmorality,oracentral

Indianthoughtandpracticeisrootedin RigVeda ,theoldestandmostimportantliterary collection,knownasverses.The RigVeda isthesourceofmanykeeninsightsintohuman .Italsocontainsareligioussystemwhichisstillincurrentuse. 10 Butifthe RigVeda laysatthefoundationofIndianthoughtandculture,wheredidthe RigVeda comefrom?

Thedevelopmentofthe Vedic viewwasinfluencedbytheancientInduscivilizationinits thoughtandculture.TheInduscivilizationisbelievedtohavebegunintheIndusValleyaround

3000B.C.Over1000yearstheInduscivilizationdevelopedmorequicklyandbecamelargerthan thoseofand.AstheInduspeoplespreadout,theyinfluencedthedeveloping

Vedic cultureandcontributedmuchtothelatergrowthofaparticularIndiantradition. 11 TheIndus religiouscontributiontoHinduismincludesof“theMother”,thesourceof cosmiccreative,andahostofindigenousspiritsandfamiliarYogapostures. 12

Veda influencedbytheInduscivilizationisbelievedtohavebeencomposedbetween

1900and1500B.C. Veda inmeans“wisdom,”or“.”Itisbelievedthatwhen peoplerecite,meditateon,andfromthe Veda asasacredtheycanobtaincreative wisdomandreachtheenergyoftheDivine. 13 Hermansaid“The RigVeda or

ThepopularHindustoryaboutatigercubthatgrewupamongaflockofsheepand discoveredhisoriginalcharactershowsthemainpointofthephilosophyofthe Upanishads .

Upanishadic claimthatthediscoveryofwhoonereallyisamountstoliberation,or moksah .The Upanishads teachthatone’sdiscoveryofone’srealselfresultsinliberationand explainthattheunionof‘ ’and‘Brahman’leadsto .18 Therefore,Hinduismis claimedtobeanadventurousjourneytowardrealliberation.ThegoalofHinduismistotakeone fromtheunhappinesscausedbyignoranceoftheirrealselftotheawakeningofaonenessofthat realselfbyenteringintounionwiththeultimatereality, Brahman .

TheFoundationofHinduBeliefs

HindusclaimtheirancientreligioncomesfromGod’s,andtheyfollow spirituallawsaccumulatedoverthepast5000years,lawsthatifobeyedwillresultintrue happiness.Thesacred Vedas claimtheoftheexistsinallreligions,andthatthesoul ispureandomniscient.The Vedas claimsoulwasneverborn,andwillneverdie.The Vedas acknowledgeoneinfinitereality, Brahman ,whoistheofthewholeworld,andtheessence 14 Herman,51. 15 Ibid. 16 Upanishad means“tositdownnear,”anditisoftencalled“thesecretteachings”ofHinduism. 17 Herman,63. 18 Ibid.,67. 6 ofall.Hindusthathumanshouldfind Brahman fortheirrealliberation. 19 A human’sdifficultsituationcontinuallyremindshimofhisdesperateneedforrealliberation.

Humanbeingsaretiedupwiththeirsufferings,andhumansufferingsarerecitedconsistentlyin the Vedas .

PrimaryHindutenetis ,whichstatesone’sactionsdetermineone’sfuturesuffering orhappiness.AnotherimportantHindutenetis ,or Samsara .Thisdoctrineasserts thatmen’slivesrepeatthecycleofbirthanduntiltheirown Karma hasbeenerased. 20 In

Hindu,men’ssoulsmerelytransfertonewbodyupondeath.ThedoctrineofKarmaand

ReincarnationsupportsthebeliefintheHinduSystem,whichconsistsoffourclasses.The topclassiscomposedofthe ().Thesecondtierisoccupiedbythe Ksatriyas

(warriors).Atthethirdlevelarefoundthe Vaisyas (merchants).Thebottomcasteconsistsofthe

Shudras (laboringclass). 21 Itisbelievedthatthetopthreeclassescanattainsalvation,but anduntouchablepeoplemustwaitfortheirnextbirthforliberation.Onceagain,thechiefgoalof

Hinduismistotrueliberation( moksha )fromthecycleofdeathand, samsara , causedbyone’s karma .22

Yoga&LiberationfromBondage

AccordingtothephilosophyofHinduism,attherootofhumansufferingisadeep ignoranceofwhoonereallyis.Thatiswhythesufferinganddeathcausedbyone’sown karma mustberepeatedceaselesslyuntiloneattainsfinalliberation, moksha .Forover4000yearsIndian

TheImageofaChariotDriver

Yogis,i.e.Yogateachers,claimtheseriouspracticeofYogademonstratesagreatdesire tochangeone’sdestiny.TheHinduideaofobtainingliberationfrombondagebycontrollingthe deeperpowersofrealityisillustratedwiththeimageofachariotdriver. 26 TheKathaUpanisad vividlydescribesthatimage:

Knowthesoulasofachariot, thebodyasthechariot. Knowtheasthechariotdriver, andthemindasthereins. Thesenses,theysay,arethehorses;

Thisassociatedwiththebody,thesensesandthemind, thewisecall'theenjoyer.' Thosewhodonothaveunderstanding, whosearealwaysundisciplined, theirsensesareoutofcontrol, likethewildhorsesofachariotdriver. 27 Theword Yoga isderivedfromtheroot yuj ,anditsprimarymeaningis“theactionof harnessing.”Thismeaningcarrieswithitbothcontrollingandjoining. 28 Thechariotdriverimage thenillustratesthe“joining”ofthedriverwiththehorsesandthechariotaswellasthe

“controlling”ofthechariotbythedriver’sgoodjudgment.Asagoodchariotdrivercancontrolthe tremendouspowerofthehorsestoaccuratelypropelthechariot,peopleneedaneffective techniqueanddisciplinefordirectingtheirtremendousspiritualenergyatthedeepestlevelof reality. 29 ItisclaimedthetechniquesofYogacanbeusedtoentirelytransformanby connectinghisearthlyselfwiththedivinereality.Throughunitywiththe Brahman ,peoplecan controltheirreality,andescapefromtheunendingcycleofdeathandrebirthtoatlastexperience theultimateliberation.Usingtheanalogyofthechariotanddriver,IndianmysticismexpertJohn

M.KollerdescribesthemechanicsofhowYogastrivestomasterbodyandsoul:

Thebody,alowerlevelofreality,iscontrolledbythemind,ahigherlevelreality.The mind,inturn,iscontrolledbyastillhigherreality,the,whilealloftheseare controlledbyandworkforthehighestreality,theSelf.Whenthepowerofthehighest levelofrealityreachesdownintothelowerlevelsofreality,discipliningandcontrolling them,theyaretransformedbythehighestpower—evenaswildhorsesaretransformedinto chariotpowerbythepowerandcontrolofaskilleddriver. 30

PenetratingtheLayersoftheSelfwithYoga

The Upanishad drawsthemodeloftheself:Theselfisaoffourconcentricspheres, oneinsidetheother.Theinnermostsphereisthe atman ,i.e.the“pureself.”Thepureselfis surroundedbythreeouterlayers.Theseouterlayersarecalledthethree gunas ,31 whichmeans

“standards.” 32 HinduismscholarA.L.Hermanintroducestheotherthree gunas bycitingthe

Upanishad:

(1) guna isthestandardorqualityofgoodness,rightness,purity,light,illumination, knowledge,andwisdom,inaword,brightness;(2) guna isthestrandorquality of“innerlusting,attachment,feeling,jealousy,outerlusting,maliciousness,hatred,… envy,insatiability,…ambitiousness,…andgluttony”,inaword,action;(3) guna isthestrandorqualityof“delusion,fear,,sleepiness,tiredness, forgetfulness,oldage,sorrow,hunger,thirst,anger,heterodoxy,ignorance, …stupidity…,inaword,inertia. 33 Fortrueliberation,ahumanbeing’spureself, Atman ,mustmeetwiththeDivineReality,

Brahman .Yogathenattemptstopenetratetheseveralouterlayersofone’sselfuntil Atman is reachableandabletounitewith Brahman .AuthorKollerobservesthatYogahasalwaysbeen understoodtorepresentanattempttomanipulatethedeeperpowersofexistenceforthesakeof transformation,andliberation. 34

Therefore,Hindusrelyonfourmainwaystoachieveliberation.

Hippiesfoundaphilosophicalfoundationtosupporttheirradicalviewofhumansexuality inHinduism’s Yoga. ThereisalsowhatBooncallsthe“cleansingbreath.”Thisbreathingtechniqueentails attemptingtousethelungsasatypeofpump.Short,rapid,andstrongbreathsaretakenduringthis breathingexercise.ThecleansingbreathmethodalsocitesScriptures,butismainlyintendedto createaburstofphysicalenergy.Studentsmustbecarefulnottobecomedizzywhileemploying thistechnique. 156

Sadly,alargepercentageofWesternchurchestoday,includingmanyAmericanchurches, aremiredinandpragmatism.Goodhealth,financialsuccess,andoverallpersonalwell beingarethe“”thesechurchesaresharingwiththisworld.Apragmaticculturehas developedinAmericaandinmanyofitschurches,causingAmericanstoregard“truthaswhatever worksforanygivenperson.”185 TheNewAgemovementisbaseduponasimilarattitudetoward achievingtheGoodLife,andthepracticeofalltypesofYogacoincidedwiththepopularityofthe

TheDifferentPerspectivesofGodandMan

Kundalini :TheSerpent’sPower

InancientNearEasternartandliteraturetheserpentwasoftenpresentedasasignificant character.Theserpent,whowasoftenworshiped,representedwisdom,fertility,health,,and evenimmortality. 186 ModernHinduismstillreverencestheserpent’spower.Hindupsychology teachesthatatthebaseofthehumanspineisabeautifultriangleinwhichliesthe kundalini ,also called“serpentpower.”InYoga,thereisnoattempttohidethevitalroleoftheserpent.Oneofthe wellknownpositionsinYogaiscalledthecobra. 187 The kundalini isbelievedtoempowerthe individualtoperformmiracles,andtoachieveliberation.Yogausesmanymeanstoawakenthe kundalini .188 ThelateCollie,a Kundalini enthusiastandblogger,wrote:

Incredibly,Yoga,whichcomesfromserpentworshipingHinduism,hasnowbeenwelcomedinto manyWesternchurches,includingfundamentalistones.Yoga,whichpromisesphysicalfitness, mentalhealth,andspiritualenlightenment,hasmanagedtopermeateBiblebelievingchurchesby concealingthefactthat“ kundalini power”isderivedfromtheSerpent. 190 OrthodoxChristians claim“Christian”yogisareattemptingtoconflatethepracticeofbeingfilledwithsocalled kundalini powerwiththeApostlePaul’scommandto“befilledwiththeHolySpirit.” 191

TheDangerof Kundalini Yoga

GopiKrishnawarnsofthedangersofthepracticeofseeminglyinnocuous Hatha Yoga:

Godlinessvs.Myths

Christianyogisassuretheirstudentsthattheirbodiesareholy,andteachthatChristians shouldglorifyGodintheirbodies. 241 Thus,theyassertthatChristianscanexerciseYogafor glorifyingGod.Enroth’sbookincludesanexcerptfromanarticleonYogainthe ewYorkTimes :

Chapterthreeabovenotedthat HolyYoga authorBrookeBoonhasclaimedthat“Unityin

ChristisabeautifulandbiblicaldesignforHispeople,andthatistheideaofHolyYoga.”Unityin

ChristisundeniablyGod’swill,andamongthepurposesofprayerforbothJesusChristandthe

ApostlePaul.They,however,saidnothingaboutachievingunitybythepracticeofYoga.Human beingsassinnersmeetJesusChristpersonallythroughbelievingintheincarnationofGodandHis oftheirownsinsbyJesus’sacrificeonCalvary’scross.And,inGod’sgoodtime,real
