INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy o f the original document. While the most advai peed technological meant to photograph and reproduce this document have been useJ the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The followini explanation o f techniques is provided to help you understand markings or pattei“ims which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or “ target" for pages apparently lacking from die document phoiographed is “Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This| may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. Wheji an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is ar indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have mo1vad during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. Wheh a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in 'sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to righj in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again - beginning below the first row and continuing on until com alete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, ho we ver, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "ph btographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • Tourism Potential of Serbian Protected Areas Dear Reader
ATLAS OF TOURISM POTENTIAL OF SERBIAN PROTECTED AREAS Dear reader, Serbia’s protected areas, the jewels of the country, contain nu- merous wonders of nature. A variety of rare, endangered animal and plant species can be observed in their natural habitat. Desi- gnating protected areas allows the provision of safe harbours for these species and ecosystems, which in many cases are unique. And promoting nature-respecting tourism and recreation in the- se areas not only allows visitors to explore these wonders, but also contributes to the livelihood of the people and communities who have lived in and shaped those landscapes over centuries. It is UNDP’s ambition, together with the authorities and people of Serbia, to support tourism and recreation in protected areas, so that you can explore their treasures. Hiking, bird watching, sport fishing, camping, but also adventurous activities, such as mountain biking, canyoning, paragliding or rafting, offer multiple opportunities for spending high quality time outdoors. Tourism infrastructure – like visitor centres, educational signalization, ob- servation towers and walking trails – are currently being built in all the protected areas to facilitate and guide visitors in exploring the nature, while enhancing the understanding and willingness to protect their unique character and inherent, rare species. I hope this “Atlas of Tourism Potential of Serbian Protected Are- as” will inspire you, guide you to remote corners of Serbia, and wake your curiosity to explore some of the most beautiful sides of this country. I would like to use the opportunity express my gratitude to the protected area managers for their valuable con- tribution in preparing it.

Editing in a Sixteenth-Century Serbian Manuscript (HM.SMS. 280) A Lexical Analysis with Comparison to the Russian Original Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By !ivojin Jakovljevi", M.A. Graduate Program in Slavic and East European Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Daniel E. Collins, Adviser Dr. Charles Gribble Dr. Predrag Mateji" Copyright by !ivojin Jakovljevi" 2011 ABSTRACT This study encompasses an analysis of the language found in the first Serbian copy of The History of the Jewish War (HM.SMS.280) compared to its Russian original (HM.SMS.281). This research follows the clues in the colophon written by the Serbian scribe, the hieromonk Grigorije Vasilije, in which he states that the Serbian people could not understand the Russian words of the original manuscript. For this reason, Grigorije Vasilije states, he had to “translate” the unknown words into Serbian. Since the Serbian manuscript consists of a large number of folia, 255 of them, a sampling approach was used, whereby eight folia from six sections were extracted and analyzed. The results of the findings identify a number of lexical variations which were distinctive in Serbian and the Russian recensions at the end of the sixteenth century. Some of the lexemes found in the Serbian manuscript are attested for the first time, and as such they make an addition to our knowledge of medieval Serbian lexicography. The findings of this research show that many of the hard-to-understand words were very specific technical terms from military vocabulary—not words that a monk (or most laymen) could be expected to know.

BALKAN SLAVIC LITERATURES READING LIST AND BIBLIOGRAPHIC GUIDE Petko Ivanov Department of Slavic Languages & Literature & Department of Anthropology, University of Chicago I. Defining "Balkan Slavic" The failure of the Yugoslav idea made obvious by the collapse of Yugoslavia posed the issue of developing new paradigms by which the literary and cultural legacy of the Southern Slavs can be discussed adequately in a political context now transformed. Two such paradigms are being currently proposed: the Balkan and the Central European one. This dichotomy reflects the actual split of the Southern Slavs along a borderline that separates two cultural-cum-political zones.
