From Our Deacon

High School Q&A with Deacon Ed

In this year’s high school parish religious education program (PREP) we are seeking ways of finding the Catholic faith in our culture. Since September, we have been gathering each week to watch a short segment of the award winning 2001 film, The Fellowship of the Ring. Then we discuss the various Christian themes that we find embedded in this popular story by the acclaimed Catholic author, J.R.R. Tolkien. One of the common criticisms of The Fellowship of the Ring is that it is, basically, the story of a long hike. It’s a fair statement. The movie features plenty of footage of the Fellowship simply walking through the landscape. To many of us, a 40-day hike would seem boring and tiresome. Yet, how many “long walks” do we find in the Scriptures? We just celebrated the long journey of the three wise men to find the infant Jesus. God called Abram to travel from modern-day southern Iraq to Israel. Moses led the Chosen People up out of Egypt—a 40-year journey! Jesus walked with His disciples from Galilee to Caesarea Philippi and back again. And our patron, St. James the Greater, journeyed from Israel to Spain! The image of a long walk (or pilgrimage) is a fundamental theme of the Christian life. It also forms an apt parallel to the spiritual “walk” we all face as we enter the season of Ordinary Time. We use the term “ordinary,” not because it is plain or boring, but rather because we count these weeks (as in “ordinal” numbers). The Church describes this period as a time “in which no particular aspect of the mystery of Christ is celebrated” (Universal Norms, 43). It is the part of our spiritual “hike” through the Church year characterized by rolling hills and broad plains—the benign landscape found between the great “mountains” of Easter and Christmas. Yet, as any avid hiker can tell you, one encounters many unexpected and memorable “sights” in the plain, open countryside. In Ordinary Time, we discover the feasts of the Saints, and we celebrate the Sunday Mass each week, “little Easters” wherein we glimpse the beautiful “vista” we experience on that most holy of days. And so, as we begin another journey through the season of Ordinary Time, may we remember that each day is not meant to be, nor should it be, a profound “mountaintop” experience. Even the adventurers in The Fellowship of the Ring endured day after tedious day of hiking through the woods and fields. We should, instead, anticipate the great “mountain views” that Eastertime promises and recall the wonderful spiritual experiences of the bygone Christmas season to strengthen our resolve to persevere on the long journey. And we ought to strive to see the simple beauty offered by each moment we share “on the road.” If you are a high school student and would like to hear more, we meet most Tuesday evenings during the academic year in the school library. Contact Sister Regina or me for more information. We’d love to have you join in the ongoing discussion about our wonderful Catholic faith! ~Deacon Ed

Three Steps to Light Your Heart with the Word Spend a little time each week preparing for Mass: 1. Read the readings for the week, available online at www.usccb.org/bible/readings/ 2. Watch the video at www.formed.org (usually 4-6 minutes) 3. Reflect on the weekly question or other thoughts that surface. Visit www.stjamescatholic.org/light for more details.

This year we will be celebrating our 125th anniversary with events, our oral history project and a weekly history lesson in our bulletin! Return here to relive our growth from a small frame church to our present iconic building which is home to thousands of parishioners. Save the date for our celebratory Mass & Reception on Sunday, May 21 at the noon Mass!

STAINED WINDOW FROM THE FRAME CHURCH

At the back of the frame church, two beautiful angels in a arch looked down on the altar. They were created by the renowned company of Franz Mayer of and New . When the church was torn down in 1902, Thomas Hillier, who was building the new church, and a colleague acquired the window. Mr. Hillier was a member of Columbia Baptist Church and the window was installed there in 1909. After a few years, it was removed and stored in the basement, only to be discovered in the 1940s and restored to the sanctuary. When a new Columbia Baptist was underway in 1968, St. James declined their offer to return the window, and it now graces the baptistery of Columbia Baptist. Ecumenical relations have a long history here.

Join our Oral History Project! Whether you love asking questions or have a great story to tell, we welcome all parishioners, former parishioners and alumni of our school and religious education programs. You can choose to be interviewed by a family member, friend or even one of our young confirmandi. Interviewers can take notes and/or record audio and video files for our archives. Your story will become part of our future. The upcoming holidays are a great opportunity to talk to family members. We hope you’ll participate. Questions? Contact Lisa Helene Bacalski at 703-532-8815 or [email protected]. Some sample questions to spark a conversation: What has been your favorite experience as a parishioner? How has Saint James walked with you on your spiritual journey? If you are new to the parish (here less than 2 years), what brought you here? If you’ve been a parishioner longer than 2 years, what keeps you coming back? What else about your experiences at St. James would you like to share?
