Ninth Annual Dugan Reception for Cancer Care Funds New Cancer Center Program

The John J. Dugan Memorial Fund for Cancer Care continues to allow the UVMC Cancer Care Center to provide a variety of services to patients including new massage therapy. This year’s annual reception was held at the Piqua home of Stacy and Benny Scott. The event, in its ninth year, was attended by more than 125 people and raised more than $50,000. John J. Dugan was a Miami County commissioner and long-time supporter of UVMC at the time of his death in 2003 from complications of esophageal cancer. His family chose to honor him through support of the local Cancer Care Center. That commitment has raised close to $410,000 for center projects. This year’s event dollars will underwrite the new integrative/complementary medicine com- ponent of massage therapy for patients. Jean Dugan, John’s wife, said she is “so happy to see the continued support from the community for the Cancer Care Center.” Dugans’ son, Brian, said the family is very happy the event has contributed so much money and energy to the Cancer Care and Infusion Center. “Dad would be very happy to see so many of his friends contributing to this great cause.” The event is unique, in part, by its venue at an area family’s home. Jean Dugan said she is honored by the continued “generosity of families who allow this event to be at the lovely Massage homes.” Therapy

The introduction of a massage therapy program this summer at UVMC’s Cancer Care Center was made possible by the John J. Dugan Memorial Fund for Cancer Care through the UVMC Foundation. A licensed massage therapist through the Ohio State Medical Board, provides hand massage, chair massage and table body massages depending on the patient’s condition and needs. Jean Heath, UVMC Cancer Care Center Director, said she wanted to offer massage therapy for cancer patients as part of their care. Putting the program together and finding the right thera- pist took some time, she said, adding she’s pleased with the program so far. “We knew massage therapy would help our patients. It relieves stress and anxiety and helps them with pain control, all of the things to help provide relief from side effects from the treatment.” The massage is an option for patients and is part of the center’s full treatment plan, which also includes genetic counseling and clinical trials among offerings.
