Candidate Information Brochure CANDIDATE INFORMATION BROCHURE To inspire young people to make their best better March 2017 Dear Candidate Thank you for taking the time to apply for the Second in English post at Maltings Academy. Maltings Academy opened in September 2008 and is part of Academies Enterprise Trust, the largest nationwide, multi-academy sponsor in the country. Academies Enterprise Trust firmly believes that all young people deserve to become world class learners – to learn, enjoy, succeed and thrive in a world class educational environment, which has the best facilities, the best teaching and the most up-to-date resources available to them. Our vision is to help students achieve world class learning outcomes by developing world class teachers in a world class community. Maltings Academy was graded as “Outstanding” by Ofsted in March 2015. “Students believe they can and will achieve and understand how to do so”. “They approach their learning with enthusiasm, confidence and determination”. Ofsted also said “students’ behaviour is excellent” and “teaching is highly effective”. This is a great opportunity to work in an outstanding school. Visits to the Academy are encouraged. To arrange a visit or for more information please contact Human Resources on 01376 512911 extension 1201 or [email protected] If you share our vision and values then we would be very excited to hear from you. Yours faithfully The Talent Team The English Department at Maltings & New Rickstones Academy The Department The English Department features seven specialist classrooms at Maltings Academy and five at New Rickstones Academy, all containing interactive whiteboards. Classrooms are based in the same corridor to provide inspiration, support and a strong team ethos. Any new member of staff is welcomed into an outstanding team that works collaboratively, innovatively and consistently in order to provide excellent experiences for the students. The team consists of seven full time specialist teachers at Maltings Academy and five full time specialist teachers at New Rickstones Academy. The department also benefits from English Intervention Tutors and LSA support for SEND students at both academies. You would be joining a friendly and supportive team. The department has an extensive range of online resources and in-house lesson materials. Excellent CPD opportunities are available and specific support is provided throughout all key stages by AET English & Literacy Team. Curriculum The aim of our curriculum for English is as follows: At KS3, students develop a range of reading, writing and speaking skills as they study each of the topics. Students read and appreciate a variety of fiction and nonfiction text, developing writing skills. They gain an understanding of the need to write with correct spelling, punctuation and grammar; to be able to infer and deduce meanings across a range of texts; write according to type, audience and purpose across a range of contexts; have belief in their own imagination. At KS4, students prepare for GCSE English Language by reading and responding to a range of articles and other texts, looking at both modern day and historically significant writers. Students also have the opportunity to write in a variety of styles. There is also an assessment of students’ speaking and listening. At KS4, students prepare for GCSE English Literature by responding to a range of poetry, prose and drama texts, spanning from Shakespeare to the modern day. The course gives the students a grounding in a wide variety of literature that will stay with them for life At KS5, students study English Literature which promotes the development of higher order reading and writing skills, in preparation for higher education. We follow a traditional approach to teaching English, which includes group work and thought provoking activities centred around close analysis of both fiction and nonfiction texts. Students are set by ability from the beginning of Year 7. This is regularly reviewed based upon careful analysis of examination performance, which takes place at regular intervals, in preparation for the final GCSE examination. Key skills are developed both in class and through extra-curricular activities including author visits, theatre production visits, Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge, specific holiday revision days. We work closely with our Primary feeder schools to ensure that the transition between stages is as seamless as possible and to ensure that students continue to develop their skills in literacy. This now involves linked pieces of work and regular visits. The GCSE specification that we follow is AQA which has one tier of entry and is graded 1-9. Results for the English Department are excellent and are above national average at both academies. In 2016 Maltings Academy achieved 83% A*-C. At KS5 we offer A-Level English though AQA. Students are keen to continue to study English Literature and the numbers enrolling are increasing year on year. As such, the opportunity to teach at A-Level will be provided for suitable candidates. • Impact of Building Schools for the Future Announcement of Monday 5 July 2010
Impact of Building Schools for the Future announcement of Monday 5 July 2010 1. This list sets out the impact on schools of the announcement on Building Schools for the Future (BSF) made by the Secretary of State for Education on Monday 5 July 2010. It has been produced by Partnerships for Schools (PfS) after validation at senior level in Local Authorities and rigorously checked by the Department for Education, including by making telephone contact with every Local Authority listed and with all affected Academy sponsors. 2. This process of checking has been necessary because of the complexity of the BSF process, to ensure the accuracy of this list and, in particular, because, to date, PfS has collected data from Local Authorities about BSF schools as they progressed. Rather than micromanaging individual schools, PfS has relied on Local Authority-level information. 3. All Local Authorities which were participating in BSF are listed, plus those who have had one school pathfinders or academies built or being built through the Partnerships for Schools Academies Framework. That is 102 Local Authorities out of a total of 152. And every school which was included within a Local Authority project is listed and is categorised as either ‘open’, ‘unaffected’, ‘for discussion’ or ‘stopped’. 1592 schools are listed in total. 159 are categorised as ‘open’, 547 as ‘unaffected’, 151 as ‘for discussion’ and 735 as ‘stopped’. 4. For simplicity, and because large numbers of pupils cross constituency boundaries to attend school, this list does not provide a breakdown of schools by constituency. 5. There are many examples of Local Authorities in this list having schools in more than one of these categories.

APPEALING FOR A PLACE AT A SECONDARY SCHOOL IN THE GEOGRAPHICAL COUNTY OF ESSEX (YEARS 7 TO 13) HOW DO I APPEAL? For most schools in Essex, you should complete the enclosed Notice of Appeal Form and return it to the address shown in the box at the top right hand corner on the Form. For some schools, you will need to deal directly with the school, as they do not buy in to the service offered by the Statutory Appeals Team – please see Appendix 2. For schools outside the Essex County Council area, you will need to contact them direct for details. Please note that a postal address showing Essex does not necessarily mean that the school is within the geographical county. Equally, a school may be situated within Essex but have a postal address of another county. We do not accept appeal forms by e-mail or by fax. We must receive the appeal form, both signed and dated, to begin the appeals process. In this document the word ‘appellant’ is used. That is usually the person having parental responsibility for the child. WHAT DO I NEED TO PUT IN MY GROUNDS OF APPEAL? You must fill in the information requested in Appendix 1. You must give your reasons why you want a place at the school for your child. Neither the School Admissions Team nor the Statutory Appeals Team can tell you what you should write. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I SEND THE APPEAL FORM IN? The Statutory Appeals Team will write to you confirming receipt of your Appeal Form and any attached paperwork.
