B A K D A 515604 P n E F A C E The present small volume was undertaken as one subject of study as Fellow in the Seminar for the Comparative Study of Religions established in the College, Baroda, by His Highness the Maharaja Sayaji Eao Gaekwad, K C. S. I. etc. The subject was suggested by Professor Widgery who also guided the author in the plan and in the general working out of the theme. It is his hope that companion volumes on the ethical ideas associated with other religions will shortly be undertaken. Such ethical studies form an important part of the aim which His Highness had in view in establishing the Seminar. The chapter which treats of the religious conceptions is less elaborate than it might well have been, because Dr. Dhalla's masterly volume on Zomasfrirm Theolof/y^ New York, 1914, cannot be dispens- ed with by any genuine student of Zoroastrian- ism, and all important details may be learned from it. Trees as a Central Theme in Norse Mythology and Culture An Archaeological Perspective AMANDA GILMORE ABSTRACT: This article, the inaugural winner of the journal’s Gurli Aagaard Woods Undergraduate Publication Award, combines the analysis of ancient literature with an archaeological approach in an effort to further interpret the presence and significance of trees in medieval Scandinavian culture. The analysis of textual references to trees such as Yggdrasill and Barnstokkr found in the Norse works Völuspá, Grímnismál, Gylfaginning, and Völsunga Saga, are combined with academic articles, juxtaposed with the examination of archaeological sites at Fröso, Herresta, Bjarsgård, Österfärnebo, and Karmøy, and integrated with modern Scandinavian attitudes to explore an interest in tree-human relationships, literature, and archaeology in medieval Scandinavia. RÉSUMÉ : Cet article, premier lauréat du prix de la revue Gurli Aagaard Woods de publication pour étudiant de premier cycle, combine l’analyse d’une littérature ancienne avec une approche archéologique, dans un effort pour interpréter davantage la présence et l’importance des arbres dans la culture scandinave médiévale. We shall not attempt, even in a general way, to seek for the causes which explain the establishment of the Oriental religions in Italy; nor shall we endeavor to show how their doctrines, which were far more active as fermenting agents than the theories of the philosophers, decom posed the national beliefs on which the Roman state and the entire life of antiquity rested, and how the destruction of the edifice which they had disintegrated was ultimately accomplished by Chris tianity. We shall not undertake to trace here the various phases of the battle waged between idol atry and the growing Church; this vast subject, which we hope some day to approach, lies beyond the scope of the present work. We are concerned here with one epoch only of this decisive revolu tion, it being our purpose to show with all the distinctness in our power how and why a certain Mazdean sect failed under the Caesars to become the dominant religion of the empire. -

A Newly Discovered Manuscript of Magnús Ólafsson’S Edda Private Collection, London
A newly discovered manuscript of Magnús Ólafsson’s Edda Private collection, London. This 8vo manuscript, purchased in Denmark a few years ago, was probably written in Iceland in the late 18th or early nineteenth century. It is written on paper, apparently by a single hand (with the minor exceptions noted below), in black ink, with some coloured (red and green or blue) decoration to the lettering of the title page. The binding is certainly more modern; it has marbled boards and a cloth spine without any lettering. The binder has cut the bottom of the leaves very close, in a few cases taking off part of the last line of writing (e.g. on page 142). The spine has become vey dry and brittle and the volume has suffered from much use. The name written on the front flyleaf in a different and probably much later hand than the text is difficult to decipher, but may read ‘Þórarinsson’. This un-Icelandic use of the patronymic alone, without the owner’s first name, suggests that this Þórarinsson, who is of course unidentifiable, had emigrated from Iceland to Denmark, perhaps in the second half of the 19th century, and had there used his patronymic as a surname in the Danish fashion. If so, this emigrant presumably brought the manuscript from Iceland to his new home with him. The title on the title page reads ‘Edda . med Vidbætir’, and this corresponds well with the contents of the volume, which is an interpolated and re-arranged version of Magnús Ólafsson’s Edda with an appendix containing material about Icelandic runes. -

Such comparisons range from investigating historical relationships to the utility of analogical parallels, and from comparisons across centuries to developing working models for the more immediate traditions behind limited sources. KOZÁK Charles University Abstract The article explores the idea of an echo, both literal and structural, that connects Old Norse cosmogony and eschatology. The motif of a bellowing sound or cry appears in cosmogony in the figure of Ymir, ‘Crier’, who is killed by the Æsir, and from his body the world is cre- ated. During the eschatological events the booming sound recurs when Heimdallr blows his horn shortly before the Æsir themselves are killed by their adversaries. A cry is also emitted by Óðinn when he sacrifices himself on the Cosmic Tree. The booming bellow is thus associated with death, especially in the context of implicit or explicit sacrifice. The structural resonance between cosmogony and eschatology is composed of a series of five motifs that reappear in the same sequence at both liminal moments. The eschatology seems to be structurally a repetition of the cosmogony, but with inverted roles: the victims are the gods, and the sacrificers are the giants, which is the inverse of the situation during the cosmogony. The present analysis sheds light on the sacrificial pattern hidden behind the two events, and helps contextualize the motif of the mighty sound that reappears at both moments in cosmic history.
