Vol. LX'XXIV No. 45 University of Connecticut Wednesday, October 29,1980 Carter talks tough in league debate CLEVELAND (UPI) — President Carter and Ronald Reagan, in a critical debate one week before the 1980 presidential election, clashed sharply Tuesday on military, economic and social issues with Carter defending his record and Reagan insisting he is not a dangerous warmonger. Carter took a strong offensive thrust, saying his Republican rival had taken '"dangerous" stands that could lead to a nuclear arms race and proliferation of nuclear weapons to terrorist countries. But Reagan denied he could overreact militarily as president, saying. "I don't ever want to see another generation of Americans bleed their lives away" on foreign soil. On social and economic programs Carter said Reagan's position was a "radical departure" from the historical principles of the Republican Party that showed insensitivity to human need. Repeatedly Reagan charged Carter with misstating and distorting his statements and said his record as governor of California was one of social progress. ' 'There you go again,'' Reagan would say with a smile as he This image of Saturn, taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft at a distance of 21.1 million miles tried to lighten the mood of the debate with a rebuke of what was made on the last day the planet and its rings could be captured within a he termed Carter's "misunderstandings." In his own attacks Reagan charged Carter with a "miserable" economic record that led to high inflation and high unemployment combined with a military and foreign policy that has seriously weakened national security. Meetings closed to the public on this campus don't foster any trust in University administration and student government. This Monday, Carol Wiggins, dean of students; Frank Napolitano and H. Fred Simons, assistant vice presidents in Student Affairs and Services; finally called upon student leaders to participate in deciding how to use the Commons dining room and the now-vacant Co-op space. But a Daily Campus staffer was not allowed to stay at the meeting. Except for the select few, (Larry Yakaitis, president of the Board of Governors; Donald Cafero, Chairman of the Inter-Area Residents' Council; James Dolan of the Graduate Student Council; Jim Deorio of the Undergraduate Student Government,) student participation was not allowed. But this cannot be viewed in an entirely pessimistic manner, the administration has finally recognized the duties prescribed to its student government No Oscars for Abscamers representatives.
