HERRNHUT AND RUSSIA: ARCHIVAL RECORDS ON MORAVIAN ACTIVITY IN RUSSIA FROM THE UNITY ARCHIVES IN HERRNHUT, GERMANY P.M. Peucker The founding of Sarepta In 1891 a dramatic decision was taken by the Unity Elders’ Conference (UEC), the leading committee of the worldwide Moravian Church. In the manor house of Berthelsdorf near Herrnhut, seat of the UEC, it was decided to call back all church of\ cials serving in the most eastern Moravian settlement of Sarepta on the Wolga River. By calling them back to Germany the rift between the Sarepta community and the Unitas Fratrum was complete; in the following year the of\ cial separation of Sarepta from the Unity was declared. Church membership of the inhabitants was terminated and the archives of the Sarepta community were transferred to Herrnhut, where they were added to the collections of the Unity Archives. Before we take a closer look at the Sarepta records and at the other records concerning Russia in Herrnhut, we have to de ne who the Moravians were. The Moravian Church is the English name for a group that in other languages is known as the Unity of the Brethren, Brüdergemeine or Eglise des Frères; probably the name Herrnhuters is even more familiar. What today is an established Protestant church with branches in 30 countries on ve continents started as a controversial religious movement in the eighteenth century. In 1722, Protestant refugees settled on the estate of Nikolaus Ludwig Count Zinzendorf (1700–60), founding the community of Herrnhut. Under the leadership of Zinzendorf the Moravians (so named after the country of origin of some of the rst settlers) developed their own form of piety that drew from many different sources including Lutheranism, German Pietism, medieval mysticism, and the traditions of the ancient Unitas Fratrum. Central to their ideas was a personal surrender to Christ whose suffering and death on the cross was to touch the heart of every Christian. Within a few years, Moravians founded Christian communities in Europe and America and started mission stations in distant corners of the globe. 130 p.m. peucker Fig. 10.1. Studia Humanitatis. 2017. № 3. www.st-hum.ru УДК 274[(437):(489):(470)] THE HISTORY OF THE MORAVIAN CHURCH ROOTING IN UNITAS FRATRUM OR THE UNITY OF THE BRETHREN (1457-2017) BASED ON THE DESCRIPTION OF THE TWO SETTLEMENTS OF CHRISTIANSFELD AND SAREPTA Christensen C.S. The article deals with the history and the problems of the Moravian Church rooting back to the Unity of the Brethren or Unitas Fratrum, a Czech Protestant denomination established around the minister and philosopher Jan Hus in 1415 in the Kingdom of Bohemia. The Moravian Church is thereby one of the oldest Protestant denominations in the world. With its heritage back to Jan Hus and the Bohemian Reformation (1415-1620) the Moravian Church was a precursor to the Martin Luther’s Reformation that took place around 1517. Around 1722 in Herrnhut the Moravian Church experienced a renaissance with the Saxonian count Nicolaus von Zinzendorf as its protector. A 500 years anniversary celebrated throughout the Protestant countries in 2017. The history of the Moravian Church based on the description of two out of the 27 existing settlements, Christiansfeld in the southern part of Denmark and Sarepta in the Volgograd area of Russia, is very important to understand the Reformation in 1500s.     Excess and Utopia: Meditations on Moravian Bethlehem Seth Moglen The problem o excess is, at once, psychological and material. It is a matter both o feeling and politics. Since it is, in part, psychological, let me begin with one o Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic parables—in this case, a parable about excrement. Freud tells us that before toilet training, little children experience defecation as a pleasurable act o creation. So imagine, i you will, a young child, enraptured with the productions o her own body, who leaves in some public part o the home, as a git to her parents, a turd. Her parents may respond in various ways. In the culture o Freud’s bourgeois fin-de-siècle Vienna, revulsion was perhaps the most likely: a sense o distress that something expelled from the body—waste, excess—had been deposited where it did not belong. The child is then taught that waste must not merely be expelled from the body, but purged from the home, family, and civilized community. It must be expunged, buried, washed away, disposed o without a trace, separated from the senses and from feelings o pleasure or desire. The boundaries o the ego, the domestic sphere, and the social order are constructed in this way. In order to become a normative subject, the child must internalize this prohibition against taking pleasure or feeling pride in waste, in excess. This internalization entails the development o feelings o shame or guilt in rela- tion to objects and emotions that must be repudiated. So the psychoanalytic problem o excess is an emotional problem: it is the problem o how one feels and how one is supposed to feel about those things culturally marked as excessive—as abject, forbidden, beyond the pale.

Das Gebict der Section Löbau- Herrnhut bildet einen Theil des Lausitzer Hügellandes. Seine schwach wellige bis hügelige Oberfläche besitzt durchschnittlich 300 m Meereshöhe und nur wenige Gipfel überragen das Niveau von 400 m; so erreicht der Kottmar mit seinem höchsten, nur wenig westlich von der Sectionsgrenze gelegenen Scheitel 583 m, der Löbauer Berg 449,9 m, der Wolfsberg zwischen Oberherwigs dorf und Strahwalde 445,6 m, der rothe Berg südöstlich vom Kottmar 436,2 m, der Hirschberg nördlich vom Wolfsberg 429,7 m, der Holzel-, der Lehmanns- und der Lehn-Berg bei Strahwalde 426,7 m, 418,4 m und 411 m, endlich der Lerchenberg 401,7 m. Der tiefste Punkt der Section liegt am Ostrande des Blattes im Pliesnitz-Thale bei Bernstadt in 225 m Meereshöhe. Die Granitberge bilden durchgängig flache, breite Rücken; einige der basaltischen Erhebungen, wie der Spitzberg bei Ober- sohland, der Hutberg bei Herrnhut und der Hirschberg bei Ober herwigsdorf, zeigen eine schöne kuppenförmige Gestalt, während der über seine flache Umgebung stark dominirende, aus Basalt und Dolerit zusammengesetzte Löbauer Berg sich in zwei Gipfel gliedert und der massige, zu oberst aus Basalt und Phonolith bestehende Kottmar die Form eines Tafelberges besitzt. Der Löbauer Berg trägt auf seinem westlichen Gipfel den eisernen Friedrich- August- Aussich tsthurm, auf seiner etwas höheren und durch eine flache Einsenkung abgetrennten östlichen Partie, dem Schafberge, einen Stein wall, dessen Nordwestseite am besten erhalten ist und der z.

    REFLECTIONS ON MORAVIAN PIETISM By ELIZABETH ZORB* NOT everyone who has been crucified, burned at the stake, or thrown to the lions has left his mark on history. But John Hus did. John Hus was burned at the stake in Constance in July, 1415, and his martyr's death had far reaching consequences-as far reaching as Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Salem, North Carolina- cities on a continent of which Hus had never even heard. His death rekindled a Bohemian national religious revolt that led, some forty years later, to the founding of a pre-Reformation church, the Unitas Fratrum. Members of the Unitas Fratrum, also known as the Bohemian Brethren, were protestant pietists, long before either of these words was generally used or had acquired its present meaning. By 1550 there were three branches of the Unitas Fratrum: in Bohemia, in Moravia, and in Poland, with a membership of about 200,000. About a century and a half after its founding, the Unitas Fratrum had a great leader and bishop, John Amos Comenius (1592-1670), who is best known as a pioneer of modern educa- tional theories, a man of universal learning, author of some two hundred treatises on an immense variety of subjects-scientific, philosophical, literary, and linguistic, as well as theological. He transmitted a reverence for learning and a high standard of educa- tion to the succeeding generations of his Moravian Brethren. Co- menius is known to many as the father of the elementary school, of the grade-school method, and of visual education. He apparently issued one of the first picture books ever written for children and his book The School of Infancy was particularly famous.

A. Comenius, who had to leave them here and to go to exile in 1621, where he then spent the whole rest of his life. One hundred years after his leaving, about 230 inhabitants of Suchdol (about 550 people from the whole of Kuhländchen region) emigrated and founded an exile village Herrnhut, from where they as missionaries spread Comenius’ ideas to various parts of the world.
