The Beginnings of Moravian Missionary Photography in Labrador Hans Rollmann
The Beginnings of Moravian Missionary Photography in Labrador Hans Rollmann he Uni ty Archives of T the Moravian Church at Herrnhut, Saxony, include a collec tion of mor e than 1,000 photo graphic plates taken by missionar ies in Labrador, besid es a smaller co ll ec tio n that comes from Greenland. These historic photo graphs, takenbetween the late 1870s and the early 1930s, cover themati cally a wide range of missionary, aboriginal, and settler existence on Labrador's north coast, from loca tions and settlements to Inuit life and labor. The photographs complement earlier artistic and ar chitectural depictions of the Labra dor settlements that were made to record the Moravian presen ce in Labrador. Unlike the earlier art, the photographs reached an increas ingly wider public in print through major German and English peri odicals, notably Missions-Blatt, Pe riodical Accounts, and MoravianMis sions. IDENTITY,KNOWLEDGE,LANDSCAPE: BIOGRAPHY AND SPACE IN PÜCKLER’S WORK Ulf Jacob Technische Universität Berlin Prince Hermann Ludwig Heinrich von Pückler-Muskau, the “inveterate traveler to all points and to nowhere,” as Heine dubbed him, was a complex figure who continues to be difficult to fathom. Labels such as landscape designer, successful author, and globe-trotter, or ladies’ man, enfant terrible, and melancholic eccentric capture only some facets of a personality that poses a challenge to researchers. To understand the twists and turns in his life and work, we must try to grasp the distinct details conveyed in the abundant source material and to understand them as the remains of a historically evolved totality. The present study at- tempts to do justice to this challenge. It rests on the assumption that the ensemble of expressions of Pückler’s life can be viewed as the manifes- tation of a continuity between action and meaning. This continuity was centered inwardly on a core of individual character traits, and at the same time it corresponded outwardly to the socioeconomic, political and cul- tural conditions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. -

The History of the Moravian Church Rooting in Unitas Fratrum Or the Unity of the Brethren
ISSN 2308-8079. Studia Humanitatis. 2017. № 3. www.st-hum.ru УДК 274[(437):(489):(470)] THE HISTORY OF THE MORAVIAN CHURCH ROOTING IN UNITAS FRATRUM OR THE UNITY OF THE BRETHREN (1457-2017) BASED ON THE DESCRIPTION OF THE TWO SETTLEMENTS OF CHRISTIANSFELD AND SAREPTA Christensen C.S. The article deals with the history and the problems of the Moravian Church rooting back to the Unity of the Brethren or Unitas Fratrum, a Czech Protestant denomination established around the minister and philosopher Jan Hus in 1415 in the Kingdom of Bohemia. The Moravian Church is thereby one of the oldest Protestant denominations in the world. With its heritage back to Jan Hus and the Bohemian Reformation (1415-1620) the Moravian Church was a precursor to the Martin Luther’s Reformation that took place around 1517. Around 1722 in Herrnhut the Moravian Church experienced a renaissance with the Saxonian count Nicolaus von Zinzendorf as its protector. A 500 years anniversary celebrated throughout the Protestant countries in 2017. The history of the Moravian Church based on the description of two out of the 27 existing settlements, Christiansfeld in the southern part of Denmark and Sarepta in the Volgograd area of Russia, is very important to understand the Reformation in 1500s. Keywords: Moravian Church, Reformation, Jan Hus, Sarepta, Christiansfeld, Martin Luther, Herrnhut, Bohemia, Protestantism, Bohemian Reformation, Pietism, Nicolaus von Zinzendorf. Excess and Utopia: Meditations on Moravian Bethlehem
Excess and Utopia: Meditations on Moravian Bethlehem Seth Moglen The problem o excess is, at once, psychological and material. It is a matter both o feeling and politics. Since it is, in part, psychological, let me begin with one o Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic parables—in this case, a parable about excrement. Freud tells us that before toilet training, little children experience defecation as a pleasurable act o creation. So imagine, i you will, a young child, enraptured with the productions o her own body, who leaves in some public part o the home, as a git to her parents, a turd. Her parents may respond in various ways. In the culture o Freud’s bourgeois fin-de-siècle Vienna, revulsion was perhaps the most likely: a sense o distress that something expelled from the body—waste, excess—had been deposited where it did not belong. The child is then taught that waste must not merely be expelled from the body, but purged from the home, family, and civilized community. It must be expunged, buried, washed away, disposed o without a trace, separated from the senses and from feelings o pleasure or desire. The boundaries o the ego, the domestic sphere, and the social order are constructed in this way. In order to become a normative subject, the child must internalize this prohibition against taking pleasure or feeling pride in waste, in excess. This internalization entails the development o feelings o shame or guilt in rela- tion to objects and emotions that must be repudiated. So the psychoanalytic problem o excess is an emotional problem: it is the problem o how one feels and how one is supposed to feel about those things culturally marked as excessive—as abject, forbidden, beyond the pale. -

Muskauer Park / Park Muzakowski
World Heritage Scanned Nomination File Name: 1127.pdf UNESCO Region: EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SITE NAME: Muskauer Park / Park Muzakowski DATE OF INSCRIPTION: 7th July 2004 STATE PARTY: GERMANY / POLAND CRITERIA: C (i) (iv) CL DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE: Excerpt from the Report of the 28th Session of the World Heritage Committee Criterion (i): Muskauer Park is an exceptional example of a European landscape park that broke new ground in terms of development towards an ideal made-made landscape. Criterion (iv): Muskauer Park was the forerunner for new approaches to landscape design in cities, and influenced the development of ‘landscape architecture’ as a discipline BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS A landscaped park of 559.90-ha astride the Neisse river and the border between Poland and Germany, it was created by Prince Hermann von Puckler-Muskau from 1815 to 1844. Blending seamlessly with the surrounding farmed landscape, the park pioneered new approaches to landscape design and influenced the development of landscape architecture in Europe and America. Designed as a ‘painting with plants’, it did not seek to evoke classical landscapes, paradise, or some lost perfection, instead it used local plants to enhance the inherent qualities of the existing landscape. This integrated landscape extends into the town of Muskau with green passages that formed urban parks framing areas for development. The town thus became a design component in a utopian -
