DOLLAR SPOT CONTROL DOLLAR SPOT CONTROL ON CREEPING BENTGRASS GREEN >> ‘CRENSHAW’, DR. BRUCE MARTIN, CLEMSON UNIVERSITY (2012) Dollar spot is a foliar turfgrass disease that infects susceptible grasses in spring once night temperatures remain above 10°C and heavy dews from warmer day temperatures create prolonged periods of leaf wetness. Symptoms will appear late spring or early summer leaving white or light tan lesions on affected leaves. Dollar spot forms small silver dollar sized spots on closely mowed turf such as course greens. Without treatment, infected spots may kill grass to the soil surface and multiple spots may merge into large blighted areas.

By applying Apply 11.2 g in 16 L of water/100 m2 as soon as possible after the first symptoms early, the primary inoculum of the dollar spot pathogen appear. is reduced, which delays the development of an epidemic until mid-summer when dollar spot naturally goes dormant due to high temperatures. Apply 8.4–11.2 g in 8 L of water/100 m2. Tourney may be mixed with Pinpoint™ for exceptional dollar spot control.

FALL APPLICATION, TWO IMPORTANT BENEFITS FALL BEST PRACTICES STRESS RECOVERY: Over the course of the summer, higher temperatures TIPS FOR REDUCING LATE SEASON TURF STRESS cause considerable turf stress above and below the surface – significantly • Adhere to fungicide programs (especially late-season) weakening the plant’s root system and, in turn, increasing turf susceptibility to disease outbreaks. SPRING • Increase mowing heights • Cooler temperatures alone aren’t enough to help root systems recover • Strict water management – water deeply and APPLY NOW TO infrequently but don’t over water from the stress induced by oppressive heat and humidity. Fungicides are PROTECT STRESSED essential to maintain and protect plant health. TURF + SETUP FOR • Syringing greens SPRING SUCCESS • Use fans to improve air circulation CLEANUP: The end of the season is time to prepare for the following season. FALL / DISEASE SUSCEPTIBILITY • Limit play or even close course for a couple days • A late season application of Tourney cleans up a wide variety of diseases, • Limit use of heavy machinery including anthracnose and brown patch, the final season application can • Increase nutrition to the plant also help take down inoculum levels and reduce disease potential the • Avoid topdressing until temperatures ease following spring. • Delay core aerification until later in the season 2 Apply 8.4–11.2 g in 8–16 L of water/100 m .
