In the years between, it underwent various air• frame and powerplant modifications and served in a variety of civil and military roles. • BMFA Scale Technical Committee Newsletter - December 2013 Editorial: Andy Sephton
BMFA Scale Technical Committee Newsletter - December 2013 Editorial: Andy Sephton The main news for this issue is Scale Helicopters will be joining BMFA Scale from the R/C Power Technical Committee with effect from the 2014 season. The 2014 Rule Book will incorporate the Helicopter Scale Rules and we will be co-opting a Scale Helicopter flyer onto the Scale Technical Committee. I didn’t get the chance to see them at this year’s Nationals, but I’m looking forward to witnessing their models next year. I’m sure you’ll join me in giving them a warm welcome into our group. For Scale Indoor Flyers, please note that the next Scale Indoor Nationals will be my last as organiser. We need a successor, please contact me for more information. I was asked by more than one modeller if static judging could be brought into the flying only schedule for Scale Indoor Free Flight and RC so that more complex models with less than ideal flying characteristics would not be disadvantaged. The very reason that flying only was introduced was to give the less complex models a chance in Scale competition. It also allows models with less than complete documentation to be constructed and demonstrated in competition. The best place to compete complex models is the Nationals, Flying Only is for flying models and there is no mark given for complexity. There will be a number of rule changes for 2014 in the January 2014 issue of the BMFA Scale Rule Book. See later in this Newsletter for a summary Results: to save space, result tables for those competitions that have their results promulgated on the Scale BMFA website have not been included in the Newsletter.

ISSUE No 83 - SUMMER 2015 Thirty years ago this year, Plane Sailing Air Displays Ltd started operations with its first Catalina. Here she is over the Kent coast on February 20th 1985 at the end of the ferry flight from South Africa and inbound to RAF Manston. Soon afterwards she had been repainted in RAF colours and was flying all over Europe (see inside front cover) Arthur Gibson £1.75 (free to members) PHOTOPAGE Plane Sailing Air Displays Ltd operated its Wright Cyclone-powered 'Super Cat' between 1985 and 1998. This photograph was taken by a Royal Navy photographer in the vicinity of RNAS Portland in Dorset during an event there and before the aircraft had blister turrets placed back on the rear hull. It was painted to represent the RAF Catalina JV928/Y of 210 Squadron as flown by Flt Lt John Cruickshank when he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Later, it was repainted in RCAF colours as 9754/P to represent the other Catalina VC holder David Hornell, its Captain. Whilst with Plane Sailing', this Catalina was registered as G-BLSC and then VR-BPS and VP-BPS RNAS Portland 2 ISSUE No 83 - SUMMER 2015 EDITORIAL ADDRESSES Editor Membership & Subs Production Advisor David Legg Trevor Birch Russell Mason 4 Squires Close The Catalina Society 6 Lower Village Road Crawley Down Duxford Airfield Sunninghill Crawley Cambs Ascot West Sussex CB22 4QR Berkshire RHI0 4JQ ENGLAND SL5 7AU ENGLAND ENGLAND Editor: [email protected] Web Site: www.catalina.org.uk Webmaster: Mike Pinder Operations Web Site: www.catalinabookings.org The Catalina News is published twice a year by the Catalina Society and is for private circulation only within the membership of the Society and interested parties, copyright of The Catalina Society with all rights reserved.

  • Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale
Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale 2010 USN/USMC/USCG 1/72 Aircraft Kit Survey J. Michael McMurtrey IPMS-USA 1746 Carrollton, TX [email protected] As 2011 marks the centennial of U.S. naval aviation, aircraft modelers might be interested in this list of US naval aircraft — including those of the Marines and Coast Guard, as well as captured enemy aircraft tested by the US Navy — which are available as 1/72 scale kits. Why 1/72? There are far more kits of naval aircraft available in this scale than any other. Plus, it’s my favorite, in spite of advancing age and weakening eyes. This is an updated version of an article I prepared for the 75th Anniversary of US naval aviation and which was published in a 1986 issue of the old IPMS-USA Update. It’s amazing to compare the two and realize what developments have occurred, both in naval aeronautical technology and the scale modeling hobby, but especially the latter. My 1986 list included 168 specific aircraft types available in kit form from thirty- three manufacturers — some injected, some vacuum-formed — and only three conversion kits and no resin kits. Many of these names (Classic Plane, Contrails, Eagle’s Talon, Esci, Ertl, Formaplane, Frog, Griffin, Hawk, Matchbox, Monogram, Rareplane, Veeday, Victor 66) are no longer with us or have been absorbed by others. This update lists 345 aircraft types (including the original 168) from 192 different companies (including the original 33), many of which, especially the producers of resin kits, were not in existence in 1986, and some of which were unknown to me at the time.
