Slovenian American Faith, Family, Freedom: the Foundation Published in Cleveland, Ohio U.S.A Slovenian American Faith, Family, Freedom: the Foundation Published in Cleveland, Ohio U.S.A. of Slovenians $4(US) Volume VIII Issue 1 11 November, 2015 SLOVENSKI AMERIŠKI ČASI Photo: Martina Jakomin ByLLaughter Breda Loncaraughter Slovenian proverb says, “Smeh je pol zdravja“ and the Eng- lish have a similar line, “Laughter is the best medicine.” ALaughter can be described as an instant vacation from stress, a healing without medicine, “carbonated holiness”(Anne Lammott ), “a tranquilizer with no side eff ects” (Arnold Glaslow), “a shock absorber that eases the blows of life” (unknown), “the shortest dis- tance between two people” (Victor Borge), “a sunbeam of the soul” (Thomas Mann). “Laughter is the sound of the soul dancing. My soul probably looks like Fred Astaire,” said humorist Jarod Kintz . Victor Hugo, among the best known French writers, said it very eloquently: “Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.” Laughter is universal – everybody laughs the same in every language. It is also spontaneous; you can’t deny laughter. When it comes, it barrels out like an unstoppable wave of feelings and emotions. It arises from external or internal stimuli, such as ticking, hearing good joke, seeing a funny happening. Remember when your grandma’s fi nger slid up your arm: Biba leze, biba gre… (The snail crawls, the snail comes) and ended up tickling your sides? Or playing the game Gladež, gladež, bunkaš... which put everyone in hysterics? That is because laughter is also contagious. Try keeping a straight face when everyone around you is bubbling. Laughter brings people together. It is a universal connector. It has been called “social glue” because it bonds us to the people we laugh with. Even the Bible extolls the benefi ts of laughter: “A joyful heart is good medicine…” (Proverbs 17:22); “A time to weep, and a time to laugh…” (Ecclesiastics 3:4); “Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, ‘Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?’” (Genesis 17:17) God did create us that we might have joy and share it with others. Very few people can resist telling a good joke. Try not to laugh at these jokes: “I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening. Sarti ha trascorso l’intera giornata con un gruppo di ragazzi afgani e pachistani. Ha cambiato identità usando un nome inventato. Si è vestito da migrante pescando dal proprio armadio la t-shirt più vintage, un paio di jeans ormai logori e vecchie ciabatte. La barba incolta e la pelle abbronzata hanno aiutato il cronista nel travestimento. La giornata è cominciata proprio al Silos, il capannone che da qualche anno funge da riparo abusivo per centinaia di migranti che proprio lì, tra fango, escrementi e spazzatura, talvolta trovano un posto dove dormire. Sono persone che per varie ragioni non sono ancora entrate nel sistema di accoglienza cittadino. Il giornalista si è messo a dormire accanto a loro, usando come giaciglio un asciugamano e uno zaino. “Hai fame? Hai bisogno di una doccia? Bene, vieni con noi!”, si è sentito dire a un certo punto da quel gruppo di giovani stranieri. Il finto migrante, insomma, è stato subito accettato e accolto. Senza troppe domande. La trasposizione sulla scena del reportage nasce da una proposta dell’attore Francesco Godina che ha intuito per primo le potenzialità artistiche e teatrali del testo.

En ese país africano, uno de los más pobres del mundo, vio a chicos descalzos viviendo en un basurero y decidió ayudarlos a tener una vida digna. Con la ayuda de la fundación France Libertes, lo producido y la ayuda de jóvenes del lugar levantó casillas precarias que fueron reemplazadas por casas de ladrillos de dos pisos y les enseñó a vivir con lo que ellos producen. Los grupos de casas fueron así creando una ciudad levantada donde estaba el basurero. Nació en la ciudad de San Martin, partido General San Martin, Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina, y es hijo de Luis Opeka y María Marolt, inmigrantes eslovenos que llegaron a la Argentina en enero de 1948 escapando del régimen totalitario en Eslovenia de Tito. De niño aprendió el oficio de albañil. A los quince años de edad decidió ser un clérigo de la Iglesia Católica y entró a un seminario de la orden Lazarista. Estudió en Lanús, vivió en Ramos Mejía e hizo el noviciado en San Miguel. Cuando aún no tenía diecisiete años construyó una casa en Junín de los Andes para una familia de indígenas mapuches.

    Padre PEDRO PABLO OPEKA Por. Julio César Romero Magliocca INFANCIA Pedro Pablo Opeka, nació el 29 de junio de 1948 en San Martín, provincia de Buenos Aires, de padres refugiados eslovenos. Al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, su padre, Luis, conocido por sus convicciones cristianas, fue arrestado y condenado a muerte por los partidarios comunistas del mariscal Tito. Pero en junio de 1945, escapó de la muerte, siendo el único superviviente de una masacre en la que murieron miles de personas. Él decide huir de su país , Yugoslavia. En un campo de refugiados en Italia, conoce y se casa con María Marolt. El 31 de diciembre de 1947, se embarcaron en Nápoles hacia Argentina. Pedro Opeka aprende oficios de construcción muy temprano, ayudando a su padre, que se convirtió en albañil a su llegada a Argentina. También juega mucho fútbol, como todos los jóvenes argentinos y quiere ser profesional. Después de graduarse, Pedro Opeka deja Buenos Aires para pasar el verano en un remoto rincón de Argentina, en la Cordillera de los Andes, con indios mapuches. Acompañado por un grupo de estudiantes católicos, él quiere crear una casa típica de la cual los aldeanos puedan aprender. Contruyen una primera casa con dos arquitectos estudiantiles. Esta experiencia, seguido de un segundo al año siguiente en la tribu de Matacos, cerca de la frontera con Bolivia, profundiza su vocación en su elección para dedicarse a los pobres y a Dios. ENTRENAMIENTO Después de estas experiencias pastorales y sociales, que decidió el 6 de marzo de 1966 a entrar en el noviciado de ser sacerdote y comienza a los diecisiete años, el seminario en los Padres Vicentinos (orden fundada en 1625 por San Vicente de Paul).
