Treasures of Japan GARDENS, ART & ARCHITECTURE

With American Horticultural Society Host Dear Friends, HOLLY H. SHIMIZU The Japanese aesthetic values the sparse, the minimal, the natural. Garden design, in particular, is an art form that the Land of the Rising Sun has been refining for over Aboard the Deluxe Le Soléal 1000 years. It is with delight, then, that I invite you on a peaceful and introspective April 29 – May 8, 2022 cruise around the southern rim of Japan in spring 2022—a time when the region’s emblematic peonies should be bursting with color.

Our journey begins in the bustling Maizuru, but quickly takes a serene turn at Yushien, a traditional water garden that is famous for its meticulously tended Japanese peonies. Tour the extraordinary grounds at the Adachi Museum Garden—considered by some to be the finest Japanese garden in the country, and certainly not to be missed.

Glover Garden o‰ers a charming change of scenery during our call in , featuring a collection of Meiji-era western-style homes reassembled around the house of a Scottish shipbuilder. The grounds feature a 300-year-old Sago palm and are said to be the inspiration for Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. ’s Peace Memorial Park, an oasis of large trees, expansive lawns, walking paths, and the ever-present A-Bomb Dome, serves as a reminder of the importance of peace. Reflect on this message at the nearby Itsukushima Shrine, a holy site marked by its dramatic torri floating in the sea.

On each shore excursion, a private coach will be chartered exclusively for AHS members. Traveling with these likeminded guests lends an exclusive feel to the voyage. And our featured speaker, Holly Shimizu, will conduct lectures and be available for informal conversation only for our group. Sincerely,

Terry Hayes Board Chair Front cover: Korakuen Garden American Horticultural Society Back cover: Sengan-en Garden AHS EXCLUSIVE GUEST SPEAKER
