The theme for this year was "Vector-borne diseases - Small creatures, Big threat". 25 April 2014 Interview by Radio & Television Hong Kong (RTHK) As one of the activities to celebrate the International Nurses Day 2014, Dr. MAK Yim-wah and two nurse experts, Ms. Susan LAU (Nurse Consultant) & Ms. LAW Wan-po (Advanced Practice Nurse) were interviewed by Mr. SIU Kwok-wa ( ) & Ms. TANG Yuen-kwan ( ), the hosts of a radio programme at RTHK on 25 April. During the programme, they had shared in the air about the nurse education in Hong Kong, the entry requirements of a nurse and attributes of an advanced practice nurse. 2 Hong Kong Society for Nursing Education Newsletter/December 2014 26 April 2014 28th Annual General Meeting & Symposium The 28th Anniversary Annual General Meeting cum Symposium was successfully held on 26 April 2014. Echoed with the fruitful discussion on enhancing patient safety through nursing education in the Society's 27th Symposium, the Society would like to continue to reinforce the issue of patient safety in difference aspects of the health care service. Thus the theme for this year was "Enhancing patient safety through good quality of services". The Society was honoured to have Dr. LEONG Che-hung, the Society's Patron to kick off the symposium by giving the opening speech. Four renowned speakers had been invited to share their views on the patient safety from their perspectives namely: Dr. KO Wing-man, the Secretary for Food and Health Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Dr. LUI Siu-fai, Clinical Professional Consultant, Division of Health System, Policy and Management. JC School of Public Health & Primary Care, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Mr. LAM Chi-yau, the Vice-Chairman of Hong Kong Alliance of Patients' Organizations; Mr. TSANG Kam-wing, Edwin, Nurse Specialist (Geriatrics), TWGHs Fung Yiu King Hospital and Mr. Vincent PAU, the nurse volunteer of Medecins Sans Frontieres. This year's theme was "A Force for Change – A Vital Response for Health". 22 May 2014 Meeting on "Reduction of Sodium and Sugar Intake" Dr. MAK Yim-wah and Dr. Vico CHIANG represented the Society to attend a round table meeting on "Reduction of Sodium and Sugar Intake" organized by the Food and Health Bureau in May. 24-28 July 2014 25th International Nursing Research Congress The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International had organized the 25th International Nursing Research Congress in Hong Kong on 24-28 July 2014.

In his illustrious career of more than fifty years, his accomplishments are remarkable in pioneering new surgical procedures, educating generations of doctors, initiating discussions and promoting awareness of diverse medical and social issues, and in different ways, bettering the life of many individuals. Now in his eighties, Dr Leong remains as energetic and steadfast as ever in his efforts to make the world a better place. Dr Leong comes from a family with extensive involvement in various areas of medicine. His father, also a medical doctor, served the Aberdeen community with dedication for decades in the last century. In those days of austerity, Dr Leong saw his parents carrying medical provisions in their rattan baskets every day as they went around treating their patients and foregoing their own comfort in the service of their calling. Such unflagging loyalty to the well-being of those under their care inspired Dr Leong to take up a career in medicine. After he obtained his medical degree from the University of Hong Kong, Dr Leong taught in the Department of Surgery of his alma mater from 1963 to 1978, at the same time carrying on a robust research agenda. His work on gastrocystoplasty, a global first, was considered a breakthrough in both technology and scientific research. His advancement in the use of material from the stomach for use in cystoplasty in humans made him world famous and earned him the position of Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1975.
