Introduced species are marked with “I”, harvest species with “HA”, and vagrant species or species with extremely limited distributions with *. The term “introduced”, as used here, represents both accidental and intentional introductions. Subspecies are not included on this list. The most current list of species and subspecies with special management status is available from the California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) Taxonomy and nomenclature used within the list are the same as those used within both the CNDDB and CWHR software programs and data sets. Pressure from increasing development and land conversion of the second longest peninsula in the world, and its islands, requires a modern synthesis of the conservation status of the herpetofauna. Herein, we evaluate the herpetofauna by assessing regulatory protections, natural protected land areas, and maintenance of ex situ species in accredited zoos. We also summarize recent changes to the taxonomy and nomenclature for this herpetofauna, as well as range extensions that further our understanding of species distributions, many of which are poorly understood. Recommendations are given to enhance and further strengthen conservation actions in Baja California, México.
