“Korea’s first show with Exclusive theatre!” “Visit NANTA THEATRE whenever you want! It’s always there!” This is how two major Korean newspapers described NANTA Theater when it opened in Jeong-dong, Seoul. The opening made headlines because before NANTA, no had staged a single show. At first, most Korean audience couldn’t understand how a theater could be organized along such lines. Some even said that the show was not refined enough and lacked sufficient dramatic structure to sustain an entire show – let alone the international . Nevertheless, we were confident of success. All the criticism simply inspired us to put our noses to the grindstone and create an even better production. On a number of occasions, we invited experts from Broadway to fine-tune the show. Because the theater was dedicated solely to NANTA, we were in short order to hone our skills in stage design and theater management. Every has been a new opportunity to learn and grow. Now the time has come to expand. We will have a bigger stage, more seats, and more exciting shows. We will go on a tour from cities to cities all across the globe. Most importantly, we will pursue this goal with the same mirth and with the idea of “joy of living” which has been the hallmark of our production since its opening night. NANTA has been a labor of love, not only for us, but for our entire team. It is our sincere wish to someday become large enough to share our passion with the whole world.

1 What’s NANTA?

The show is titled COOKIN' because of its simple appeal to the audience. In addition, the title allows for a more international approach to the show that is called NANTA in Korea. The figurative meaning behind NANTA is a reckless punching of a typical boxing match. Our NANTA is a non-verbal performance of reckless rhythms that dramatize customary Korean percussion in a strikingly comedic stage show. It integrates unique Korean traditional tempos with a western performance style.

NANTA is a comic musical non-verbal performance derived from the traditional Korean instrumental performance “Samulnori.” The kitchen is its backdrop, chefs its main characters. Knives and other kitchen utensils are transformed into musical instruments in the hands of the performers. They thrill the audience with acrobatic cooking shows, a surprise wedding ceremony, and an exciting dumpling challenge. The highlight of the show is a “Water Drum Sequence” where drummers beat 5 standing kitchenware drums with water and LED lights on it and this climax makes the audience confused whether it’s drum or their heart beating.

NANTA has been one of the most popular shows in Korea ever since it premiered in October 1997, drawing the largest number of spectators in Korean theatre history. NANTA made its international debut in 1999 at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it received an award for the best performance. Since then, NANTA has shown in the U.K., Germany, Austria, Italy, , Taiwan, Singapore, the Netherlands, , etc. Eventually NANTA made it all the way to New York, premiering at the Minetta Lane Theater(off-Broadway) on March 7, 2004 and ran for one and a half years. NANTA had become the first Asian show to open its own theatre on On/Off-Broadway theater!

As the energetic spectacle for all ages, and the landmark of Seoul which attracts tourists from all over the world, NANTA aims to become the longest- running show in Korea. Its 365 days-open run theatre has welcomed more than 1 million foreign visitors and through the world tour(51 Countries. 289 cities), it has been meeting more than 2 million foreign audiences. Celebrating the 15th anniversary in Oct. 2012, NANTA has been preparing for the wonderful future days coming up and is now ready to leap for the new decade in the world.

What’s NANTA?

* Nonverbal Performance NANTA is a nonverbal performance. Since it has no dialogue, and the story is expressed through music and motion, there is no language barrier. Thus, NANTA can be enjoyed by people of many different cultures.

* Traditional Korean Rhythms NANTA provides an opportunity for international audience to experience not only uniqueness but also familiarity simultaneously by combining rhythms from Korean folk music with modern musical forms. * Many nonverbal can seem dull because they consist of only rhythms and beats. NANTA overcomes this drawback by using the art of cuisine as its background, and adding dramatic scenes with brilliant acting to the performance.

* Audience Participation NANTA’s audience can become part of the show and perform on stage. During the performance, spectators get a change to become a bride and groom in a traditional Korean wedding ceremony, compete in dumpling stacking, and interact with the performers. * Synopsis Washing vegetables, carrying meat loafs, setting fire, chefs at NANTA kitchen are about to begin their daily routine, then the unpleasant manager brings his incompetent nephew and lets him work as a chef. The manager leaves with a harsh order that they have to prepare a wedding reception, which was not a part of their schedule. None of them are happy with the situation, but they begin to solve a whole array of difficulties with laughter and humor. The pleasant smell of food being cooked spreads all over the kitchen and the smiling faces of the hilarious cooks make both the stage and the audience united. The reception is at 6 o’clock and it is at hand! Will the NANTA cooks complete the preparation on time? * Characters Manager, Head Chef, Hot Sauce, Sexy Guy and Nephew

NANTA on Broadway

NANTA has become the first Asian musical to debut on Broadway in September 2003 at the NEW VICTORY THEATRE on 45nd Ave., New York. Since our first performance in 1997, making NANTA to be on Broadway was a burning ambition for our cast and crew. The performance was successful and the audience’s support was beyond expectations. Just six months after it’s Broadway debut, NANTA became the first Asian musical to be staged as a regular show, appearing at the MINETTA LANE THEATRE takes rank with all the famous worldwide performances.

NANTA on Broadway ended its run on August 7, 2005 after one and a half years. Hopefully, this productive and edifying experience will serve as a launching pad for the show’s worldwide success.
