The Art of Anticipation: The Artistic Status of the Film Trailer and its Place in a Wider Cinematic Culture Daniel Hesford PhD Film Studies The University of Edinburgh 2013 The Art of Anticipation: The Artistic Status of the Hollywood Film Trailer and its Place Within a Wider Cinematic Culture Abstract: Close association with, and proximity to, a culture of commercialism means film trailers are often overlooked in academic analyses of cinema. Trailers are, for many audiences, simply adverts: disposable, consumable and not 'worthy' of the critical attention paid to the their feature-length antecedents. Yet trailers' undeniable impact on spectators generates a spectrum of reactions which contradicts the often dismissive and negative reception with which they are met. Trailers receive intense popular and critical scrutiny and are constantly compared to the films they represent.

  • The Case of Vandana Singh: Reading Indian Science Fiction, with a Warning About Wrongs
The Case of Vandana Singh: Reading Indian Science Fiction, with a Warning about Wrongs Sara Martín Alegre Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona This is the text and the PowerPoint file of the paper presented at the International Conference of the Spanish Association of Indian Interdisciplinary Studies (AEEII), Writing/Righting Wrongs: Misrepresentation, Discrimination, Inequality. Facultat de Filosofia i Lletres, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain, 29 November to 1 December 2017 Sara Martín Alegre Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona November 2017 As you may see, the original title of the paper, “The Confluence of Mysteries: Myth, Mathematics and the Multiverse in Short Fiction by Vandana Singh”, is now a superfluous alliterative subtitle meant to conceal, as far as possible, the limited close reading of Singh’s fiction in this essay. Perhaps if I had worked on her beautiful short fiction in a context different from this of this conference, I would have focused directly of the four words beginning with an ‘m’ in my first title. However, the need to read the available academic bibliography on Singh within the context of a conference called 1 Sara Martín, “The Case of Vandana Singh, with a Warning about Wrongs” Writing/Righting Wrongs has led me in a direction that, while not that difficult to anticipate, was not my original aim. But, then, how can one speak of an Indian writer without taking into account the connections between Indianness and postcolonialism? This conference intends to redress the wrongs done to India regarding its colonialist misrepresentation, the discrimination against her writers and the inequality with which texts and authors have been dealt with outside Indian borders.

  • Science Fiction in Spain
Science fiction in Spain Even though the science fiction genre in Spain has not achieved the popularity and importance as in Anglo-Saxon countries, there is still a tradition with many published titles. It can be considered that the genre began in the 16th century, among these early authors are Antonio de Guevara with Golden book of Marco Aurelio in 1527. Some authors even suggest some passages where prodigious objects are described in the Sarracina the Chronicle, 1430 manuscript of Pedro del Corral or some works of Francisco de Quevedo. Also we have Clavideño adventure, the flying wooden horse riding the Ingenious Gentleman and his squire in the second part (Chap. XLI) of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes published in 1615. Juan de Espina y Velasco, who during the reign of Philip II, wrote technological wonders as built-in beds, "music thread", robots, image projectors and so on. But it was not until the seventies of the nineteenth century when a real boom of the pseudo-science fiction that definitely will excel in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century with the beginnings of the popular novel and the publication of brochures occurs. Miquel Estorch Siqués (1809-1870). Lawyer, writer, mathematician and amateur astronomer born in Olot (Girona), published between 1856-58 Lunigrafía, with curious news about the productions, language, religion, laws and customs of lunícolas, under the pseudonym Krotz. In this work, published in several chapters, there is a bitter criticism of the reign of Elizabeth II and has the virtue of being the first fictions imagine the trip to the moon within a cannonball, method repeated years later Jules Verne and others.

Martín: Science Fiction in the Spanish University Introduction: A battle not yet won The reflections presented here spring from preparing a new course on sf scheduled for the academic year 2015-16.1 As I searched for a suitable introduction–one accessible to second- language undergraduate students–I frequently came across statements declaring that teaching sf at a college level was no longer controversial. “For a long time, science fiction struggled with what might be called a ‘crisis of legitimation’”, Brian Baker writes. He adds that Now, in a sense, many of these battles have been won. Courses on science fiction are now commonplace in undergraduate degrees in English literature (I teach one myself); there are countless books on the subject, and more published every year; there are major academic journals dedicated to its study (the first, Extrapolation, was founded some 50 years ago) (1).

  • Introduction: the Invention of Eco-Futures
Author: Heise, Ursula K. Title: Introduction: The Invention of Eco-Futures Introduction: The Invention of Eco-Futures Ursula K. Heise Department of English, UCLA The history of science fiction over the last fifty years is a history of expansion and infiltration. The psychological concerns of the New Wave, the exploration of gender roles and social structures in feminist science fiction, the virtual environments of cyberpunk, the often anxious explorations of identity in futuristic Japanese films, and recent blends of high-tech scenarios with fantasy's explorations of the supernatural have led to successive explosions of the science fiction canon, now infinitely larger and more diverse than it was in the early 1960s. At the same time, science fiction has filtered out from the cordoned-off domain of the popular subgenre into mainstream fiction and film. Writers such as Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Arno Schmidt, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Margaret Atwood have for decades written science fiction that was considered part of the high literary canon, even as the bulk of works in the genre continued to be perceived as part of a separate domain with inferior cultural credentials. In the United States, the work of Philip K. Dick and Thomas Pynchon in the 1960s and '70s initiated recurrent cross-over fertilizations between science fiction and mainstream fiction and film. As Brian McHale has pointed out, not only did Pynchon integrate comic book and sf conventions in his high-literary works, but Dick's novels and short stories have again and again served as the basis for highly successful films, from Blade Runner (1982) and Total Recall to Minority Report, and a feminist postmodernist such as Kathy Acker appropriated motifs from William Gibson's cyberpunk within a few Vol 1 3 years after the publication of his epoch-making Neuromancer (1984).

  • Decolonizing the Mind, Writing Outside the Identity Box: Vandana
Decolonizing the Mind, Writing Outside the Identity Box: Vandana Singh’s Complex Speculative Fiction1 Sara Martín [email protected] Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona October 2020 ABSTRACT: Taking as a case study Vandana Singh and her speculative fiction collection Ambiguity Machines (2019), I deal here with the difficulties experienced by women writers whose work is strongly influenced by factors outside the habitual definition of identity. Singh, a professional scientist with a long career, migrated from her native India to the United States to further her education in physics. Her writing, celebrated for its high literary quality, is closely connected to her scientific practice, as she herself has often stressed in interviews. Yet, academic analysis of Singh’s work highlights, above all, her ethnic identity and background, thus exaggerating its influence on her writing. This means that, unlike white women authors, Singh must struggle simultaneously to decolonize her mind, a concept she has often invoked, and resist academic readings of her stories as, primarily, examples of diasporic, post-colonial, or transnational writing, while she tries to offer clues about how her writing should be assessed. KEYWORDS: Vandana Singh, women’s writing, race, ethnicity, science fiction Introduction: The Limits of Racial and Ethnic Identity Politics The intensive academic analysis of race and ethnicity as essential factors in the work of non-white women writers has served the purpose of unmasking the discrimination techniques employed by the white literary establishment but may also have become a hindrance for their advance. On the one hand, discrimination can never be totally over as long as white women writers are not assessed following racial and ethnic parameters as well.
