Based on the theories of Stuart Hall about representation, Julie Wosk’s book My fair laides and Gorman Beauchamps article The Frankenstein complex and Asimov’s Robots, I have studied how the humanlike robots are represented and how the myths of the Frankenstein complex and the myth of Pygmalion are represented in the two series. The conclusions that could be drawn from this analysis was that there where many reproductions of the typical sci-fi myths and racial and gender stereotypes in the representations of the robots as the “other”. But there were also some more complex representations of the relation between robots and humans in the series. Life, but Not As We Know It: A.I. and the Popular Imagination
Life, but not as we know it: A.I. and the popular imagination By Luke Goode Abstract Advances in artificial intelligence (A.I.) are prompting a growing chorus of both excitement and anxiety. A.I. is widely perceived as a significant emerging and future-shaping technological field that is developing at an accelerating rate. As such, futuristic imagery involving A.I. is increasingly prevalent in popular media. A central task for critical future studies is to assess both positive and problema- tic aspects of the futuristic scenarios offered up for public consumption, and to evaluate their role as part of a ‘futural public sphere’ (Goode & Godhe 2017). In this paper, I discuss three distinct but interwoven strands of public discourse that each have a role to play in shaping the popular imagination around possible A.I. futures. I begin with a selective discussion of mainstream science fiction represe- nations. Secondly, I consider several recent and high-profile popular media events surrounding real-world developments in A.I. Finally, I turn to contemporary fu- turology and, specifically, the discourse of the ‘singularity’ which posits a near future in which artificial ‘superintelligence’ outstrips human cognitive capacities. In this paper I argue that, while much popular coverage of A.I. is sensationalist and potentially misleading, public engagement with a complex, technical subject such as this depends on the circulation of ’evocative stories’ which can act as entry points into public debate. As such, it is important to understand the evocative power of the stories we frequently tell ourselves in popular discourse about A.I. -

Fascination/Frustration: Slash Fandom, Genre, and Queer Uptake Taylor Boulware A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Thomas Foster, Chair Anis Bawarshi Katherine Cummings Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of English Fascination/Frustration: Slash Fandom, Genre, and Queer Uptake by Taylor Boulware The University of Washington, 2017 Under the Supervision of Professor Dr. Thomas Foster ABSTRACT This dissertation examines contemporary television slash fandom, in which fans write and circulate creative texts that dramatize non-canonical queer relationships between canonically heterosexual male characters. These texts contribute to the creation of global networks of affective and social relations, critique the specific corporate media texts from which they emerge, and undermine homophobic ideologies that prevent authentic queer representation in mainstream media. Intervening in dominant scholarly and popular arguments about slash fans, I maintain a rigorous distinction between the act of reading homoerotic subtexts in TV shows and writing fiction that makes that homoeroticism explicit, in every sense of the word.This emphasis on writing and the circulation of responsive, recursive texts can best be understood, I argue, through the framework of Rhetorical Genre Studies, which theorizes genres and the ways in which they are deployed, modified, and circulated as ideological and social action. I nuance the RGS concept of uptake, which names the generic dimensions of utterance and response, and define my concept of queer uptake, in which writers respond to a text in ways that refuse its generic boundaries and status, motivated by an ideological resistance to both genre and sexual normativity. -

PROJECT ÚTER Project Uter Considering the intense mobilizations that have taken place in Spain in recent years, a “debate” about abor- tion seemed necessary and liberating to us. We consi- dered addressing the issue using a graphic narrative, leaving aside the pitfalls of written language, so that the work could turn into a useful communication tool that would allow us to work on a very historic and universal topic that is still taboo around the world. Our aim is to create images that communicate. Listening first, we began to collect people’s stories in order to engage in dialogue with them and generate conversations. Some stories turned into anecdotes that appear translated into metaphors in the final drawing. Others helped to frame the issue, to gain perspecti- ve, to problematize it. Just like the Beehive Design Collective does, we reinvigorate traditions of oral history and story-telling images that encourage slow, methodical consideration. Also, we use animals to represent people’s stories. If you look carefully, you’ll see how most of the names of animals that appear in the poster are used to insult women, especially in the Spanish language. They suddenly became the heroines of this story, so we can re-appropriate those words in an empowering way We want to share these images and the process that made them by organizing presentations in which we tell the stories behind this graphic. This zine is a written version so folks can take it home with them and explore the images more thoroughly. We are always open to feedback and new ideas. -

However, journalistic coverage of mediA fandom cAn be misinformed and include condescending framing. In order to remedy negatively biAsed framing seen in journalistic reporting on fandom, I wrote my own long form feAture showing the modern stAte of FAndom based on the generation of lAte millenniAl women who engaged in fandom between the eArly age of the Internet and today. This piece is mAinly focused on the modern experiences of women in fandom spaces and how they balAnce a lifelong connection to fandom, professional and personal connections, and ongoing issues they experience within fandom. My study is also contextualized by my studies in the contemporary history of mediA fan culture in the Internet age, beginning in the 1990’s And to the present day. -

The Effect of Abortion Legalization on Fertility, Marriage, and Long-term Outcomes for Women Libertad González* Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Barcelona GSE Sergi Jiménez-Martín Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona GSE and FEDEA Natalia Nollenberger IE Business School-IE University Judit Vall Castello Universitat de Barcelona, IEB & CRES-UPF May 2018 Abstract: We evaluate the short- and long-term effects for women of access to legal, subsidized abortion, by exploiting the Spanish legalization of abortion in 1985. We find robust evidence that the legalization led to an immediate decrease in the number of births to women aged 21 and younger. This effect was driven by provinces with a higher supply of abortion services. Young women affected by the reform were also less likely to marry. We also find that the affected cohorts of women achieved higher educational attainment, and reported higher life satisfaction 15 years after the reform.
