A Cosmopolitan Metropolis
Joburg’s history has been instrumental in establishing a colourful metropolis that is tremendously rich in diversity. Travelling between different suburbs you might think you are travelling from one part of the world to another.
These two maps represent different kinds of diversity – racial and language based. The darker the colour the higher the diversity. There is diversity of some kind almost everywhere in Joburg.

A Series of Villages
Although Johannesburg is a bustling metropolis many of its leafy suburbs (nicknamed the ‘Parks’) are more like a series of quaint villages.
These and other neighbourhoods, Craighall Park Parkview Parkhurst like Melville and Soweto, centre around café-lined high streets, in picturesque settings visited by tourists and locals alike. Did you know: Vilakazi Street in Soweto is the only street in the world to have had 2 Nobel Peace Prize winners living there. Joburg as Part of a Larger Village – the Gauteng City Region
Johannesburg is a vital part of the Gauteng City Region (GCR). The GCR is an interconnected conurbation linked to a world network of major cities.
City regions are made up of areas that have more functional linkages with each other than with outside areas - like a village.
In 2011, 13.4 million people lived in the GCR within 100km of central Joburg. 37% of people who migrate to Gauteng live in Joburg, the single highest recipient area.
Johannesburg is ranked as Africa’s only alpha world city. Her global peers include Sydney, Sao Paulo, Milan, Source: GCRO.ac.za, GCRO QoL IV 2015, GaWC 2016 Chicago, Moscow, Toronto, Seoul, Pic: Henrique NDR Martins/Getty Images Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur & Amsterdam. THE STATE OF THE CITY
