It receives only occasional funds from the church’s treasury. We have an annual budget between $500.00 and $1,000.00. Costs include printing, software purchases and subscriptions, hardware repairs and updates, reproduction and copyright fees, and mileage and appropriate meals for interviews and the like. The staff is all-volunteer. Additional funds beyond our current needs will allow training for staff, an increased presence in our community, hardware and software upgrades, and a broader outreach. A Welsh Classical Dictionary
A WELSH CLASSICAL DICTIONARY DACHUN, saint of Bodmin. See s.n. Credan. He has been wrongly identified with an Irish saint Dagan in LBS II.281, 285. G.H.Doble seems to have been misled in the same way (The Saints of Cornwall, IV. 156). DAGAN or DANOG, abbot of Llancarfan. He appears as Danoc in one of the ‘Llancarfan Charters’ appended to the Life of St.Cadog (§62 in VSB p.130). Here he is a clerical witness with Sulien (presumably abbot) and king Morgan [ab Athrwys]. He appears as abbot of Llancarfan in five charters in the Book of Llandaf, where he is called Danoc abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 179c), and Dagan(us) abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 158, 175, 186b, 195). In these five charters he is contemporary with bishop Berthwyn and Ithel ap Morgan, king of Glywysing. He succeeded Sulien as abbot and was succeeded by Paul. See Trans.Cym., 1948 pp.291-2, (but ignore the dates), and compare Wendy Davies, LlCh p.55 where Danog and Dagan are distinguished. Wendy Davies dates the BLD charters c.A.D.722 to 740 (ibid., pp.102 - 114). DALLDAF ail CUNIN COF. (Legendary). He is included in the tale of ‘Culhwch and Olwen’ as one of the warriors of Arthur's Court: Dalldaf eil Kimin Cof (WM 460, RM 106). In a triad (TYP no.73) he is called Dalldaf eil Cunyn Cof, one of the ‘Three Peers’ of Arthur's Court. In another triad (TYP no.41) we are told that Fferlas (Grey Fetlock), the horse of Dalldaf eil Cunin Cof, was one of the ‘Three Lovers' Horses’ (or perhaps ‘Beloved Horses’). -

Louis XVI had been condemned to death. Already they were leading toward the guillotine the descendant of nearly forty kings who, for fourteen centuries were succeeded on the French throne and had made that nation so powerful, so glorious, and so prosperous. Would the French indifferently witness that assassination and allow the best of men and the most paternal of kings to be bled white? Several loyal royalists resolved an attempt to prevent this crime and to tear the innocent victim away from his executioners. It was a gentleman, originating from Gascogne and then aged 33 years, the famous baron of Batz, who installed himself at the head of the movement. RTE: Father Maxime, can you orient us to Brittany? FR. MAXIME: Yes. Today we commonly use the term Great Britain, but not many people realize that its counterpart across the Channel, Little Britain or Brittany, was more culturally tied to Cornwall, Wales, and Ireland than to Gaul (France). Christianity came here very early. In Little Brittany, also called Amorica, the very first missionaries were two 3rd-century martyrs, Rogasian and Donasian. Igor: Didn’t Christianity take root earlier in France? FR. MAXIME: Yes, it did. When the Church was first established in France, there was no France as we know it now; it was called Gallia (Gaul). Brittany, where I am from, and which is now a part of northern France, was then another region, a Celtic culture. But in the Roman, Latin region of Gaul there were great early saints – not apostles, but certainly disciples of the apostles, the second and third generation. -

Breton Patronyms and the British Heroic Age Gary D. German Centre de Recherche Bretonne et Celtique Introduction Of the three Brythonic-speaking nations, Brittany, Cornwall and Wales, it is the Bretons who have preserved the largest number of Celtic family names, many of which have their origins during the colonization of Armorica, a period which lasted roughly from the fourth to the eighth centuries. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the Breton naming system and to identify the ways in which it is tied to the earliest Welsh poetic traditions. The first point I would like to make is that there are two naming traditions in Brittany today, not just one. The first was codified in writing during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and it is this system that has given us the official hereditary family names as they are recorded in the town halls and telephone directories of Brittany. Although these names have been subjected to marked French orthographic practices, they reflect, in a fossilized form, the Breton oral tradition as it existed when the names were first set in writing over 400 years ago. For this reason, these names often contain lexical items that are no longer understood in the modern spoken language. We shall return to this point below. The second naming system stems directly from the oral tradition as it has come down to us today. Unlike the permanent hereditary names, it is characterized by its ephemeral, personal and extremely flexible nature. Such names disappear with the death of those who bear them. -

St. Paul Aurelian Catholic.net Paul Aurelian (known in Breton as Paol Aorelian or Saint Pol de Léon and in Latin as Paulinus Aurelianus) was a 6th-century Welshman who became first bishop of the See of Léon and one of the seven founder saints of Brittany. He allegedly died in 575 at the age of 140 after having been assisted in his labors by three successive coadjutors. This suggests that several Paul's have been mixed up. Gilbert Hunter Doble thought that he might have been Saint Paulinus of Wales. Family According to his hagiographic Life, completed in 884 by a Breton monk named Wrmonoc of Landévennec Abbey, Paul was the son of a Welsh chieftain named Perphirius/Porphyrius ("clad in purple"), from Penychen in Glamorgan. He was later given three saintly sister-martyrs; Juthwara, Sidwell and Wulvela. In the Life of Cadoc the princely founder of Llancarfan is reckoned the son of Gwynllyw, eponymous founder of the cantref of Gwynllwg and the son of Glywys. Medieval sources give Gwynllyw a brother, called "Pawl", who is chief of neighbouring Penychen. Career Paul first was a pupil of Saint Illtud at Llantwit Major. Later, he studied on Caldey Island with Samson of Dol and Gildas. He went to Brittany, establishing monasteries in Finistère at Ouessant on the northwest coast of Brittany, at Lampaul on the island of Ushant, on the island of Batz and at Ocsimor, now the city of Saint-Pol-de-Léon, where he is said to have founded a monastery in an abandoned fort. He was consecrated bishop there under the authority of Childebert, King of the Franks. -
