Dallis: Haunted Narratives: The Afterlife of Gothic Aesthetics in Contemporary Transatlantic Women’s Fiction (Under the direction of Minrose Gwin and Shayne A. Legassie) My dissertation examines the afterlife of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Gothic aesthetics in twentieth and twenty-first century texts by women. Through close readings and attention to aesthetics and conventions that govern the Gothic, I excavate connections across nation, race, and historical period to engage critically with Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, 1959; Angela Carter’s “The Lady of the House of Love,” 1979; Shani Mootoo’s Cereus Blooms at Night, 1996; and Toni Morrison’s Love, 2003. These authors consciously employ such aesthetics to highlight and critique the power of patriarchy and imperialism, the continued exclusion of others and othered ways of knowing, loving, and being, and the consequences of oppressing, ignoring, or rebuking these peoples, realities, and systems of meaning. Such injustices bear evidence to the effects of transatlantic commerce fueled by the slave trade and the appropriation and conquering of lands and peoples that still exert a powerful oppressive force over contemporary era peoples, especially women and social minorities. -

Un héros même, Monsieur le baron de Vastey! —René Philoctète, Monsieur de Vastey If the Haiti of Walcott, Miller, Césaire, Hammerman, and Rodman, is a Haiti isolated by its own leaders, Philoctète’s Monsieur de Vastey shows a country highly connected to and controlled by its formal colonial occu- pier, France, as well as by other regional powers with interests in Haiti, including the United States and Great Britain. Although Philoctète por- trays these countries as manifestly interested in the country, his depiction of the essential connectedness of Haiti to the rest of the world does not revel in blame. The play embraces a central understanding of the colonial relation as necessarily global, enabling its author to simultaneously critique both Haitian political leaders and the world powers that circumscribed their abilities to effectively lead the country. Philoctète shows that one can engage in this kind of analysis without asserting one defnitive cause for Haiti’s ongoing political woes. The Children of San Souci, Dessalines/Toussaint, and Pétion

Abstract This work, using a structurationist, structural Marxist understanding of consciousness constitution, i.e., phenomenological structuralism, explores the origins of the contemporary Haitian oppositional protest cry, “the children of Pétion v. the children of Dessalines.” Although viewed within racial terms in regards to the ideological position of Pétion representing the neoliberal views of the mulatto elites, and economic reform and social justice representing the ideological position of Dessalines as articulated by the African masses, this article suggests that the metaphors, contemporarily, have come to represent Marxist categories for class struggle on the island of Haiti within the capitalist world-system under American hegemony at the expense of the African majority, i.e., the Children of Sans Souci. Keywords: African-Americanization, Vodou Ethic and the Spirit of Communism, Religiosity, Black Diaspora, Dialectical, Anti-dialectical, Phenomenological Structuralism Introduction Since 1986 with the topple of the Haitian dictator, Jean-Claude “Baby-Doc” Duvalier (1951-2014), whose family ruled Haiti for almost thirty-years, the rallying cry of Haitian protest movements against dictatorship and American neoliberal policies on the island has been, “the children of Dessalines are fighting or stand against the children of Pétion.” The politically charged moniker is an allusion to the continuous struggles over control of the Haitian nation- state and its ideological apparatuses between the Africans who are deemed the descendants of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the father of the Haitian nation-state; and the mulatto elites (and more recently the Syrian class) who are deemed heirs of the mulatto first President of the Haitian Republic, Alexandre Pétion. -

SERVING THE SPIRITS: THE PAN-CARIBBEAN AFRICAN-DERIVED RELIGION IN NALO HOPKINSON’S BROWN GIRL IN THE RING MONICA COLEMAN Set in the Caribbean-Canadian community of Toronto, Canada, Nalo Hopkinson’s Brown Girl in the Ring reflects the unique ethnic and national identities of the Caribbean diaspora. Both literary scholars and Hopkinson herself note the ways in which Hopkinson uses language to identify both the different national distinctions within the Caribbean immigrant community and the relationship that the Caribbean community has to the larger Canadian society. However, it is through her description of “serving the spirits” that Brown Girl describes a pan-Caribbean identity within the Caribbean diaspora of Toronto. In the concept of “serving the spirits,” Hopkinson draws together various African-derived religious traditions found throughout the Caribbean into one religious practice. By dissolving the boundaries in religious practices, “serving the spirits” functions as the basis for a unique pan- Caribbean identity for the characters of Brown Girl. Brown Girl in the Ring is set in the future decaying inner city left when Toronto’s economic base collapses. The city center is inhabited only by the formerly homeless and poor, now squatters, and is ruled by drug lord Rudy and his posse. The protagonist, a young Caribbean-Canadian female named Ti-Jeanne, lives with her grandmother, who runs a business in herbal medicine that has become vital to the disenfranchised of the Burn. Ti-Jeanne’s grandmother, Mami Gros-Jeanne, is a faithful follower of the spirits. Ti-Jeanne, on the other hand, believes that the herbal medicine and African-derived spirituality of her grandmother should have no role in the lives of sane and practical people. -

Features of Caribbean culture in the work of Caribbean writers in the diaspora. ABSTRACT Writers of Caribbean ancestry who live outside of the region are usually described as having dual allegiance (~aribbean/~rnericanfor example). This is eminently justifiable since there is usually a recognizable Caribbean flavour to the writing. This paper tries to identify the features of Caribbean culture incorporated in three texts (Paule Marshallfs Praise Song for the Widow, Kwadwo Kamaufs Flickering Shadows, Nalo Hopkinsonfs Brown Girl in the Ring) and to comment on how these features are manipulated and with what effect. Some coment on the relative strength of cultural features should be possible as a result of the exercise. Command performances of ritual Kumina in Jamaica, Shango in Trinidad the Dugu in Belie are examples that come to mind. Ancestor related phenomena and practices associated with them are fascinating aspects of Caribbean culture if their popularity in the creative output of the region is anything to go by. In the real situation, belief systems that incorporate ritual associated with the spirits of the dead tend to be regarded as African and so as part of the environment in which the poorer and less educated classes of the society live. Eurocentic education and mores have ensured that this attitude towards them remains entrenched. -
