This exploration spans across literary genres and centuries, and juxtaposes disciplines that are rarely put into dialogue with each other. Central to my approach is an interdisciplinary perspective that sheds light on the key interactions between colonial history, legal decrees, anthropology and engaged literature in nineteenth-century French and Francophone studies. And in charting the impact of these writings on the twentieth-century Francophone landscape, this project also addresses current debates in Caribbean, French and Haitian studies and contributes to the growing literature in black Atlantic and postcolonial studies. This research project begins by analyzing rhetorical representations of race and resistance in rare texts from Toussaint Louverture, Pompée-Valentin de Vastey and Juste Chanlatte, in particular with respect to their representations of the Haitian revolution (1791-1804), the only successful slave revolt in history to have resulted in the creation of a new state. By focusing on how Louverture, Vastey and Chanlatte responded to slavery, pseudo- scientific theories of racial difference, and the pernicious effects of the colonial system, it explores both the significance of the revolution’s literary representation and the extent of its impact on postcolonial imaginations in Haiti, and the rest of the Caribbean, Africa and France. Du Bois, 9) 1 This quotation struck me immediately the very first time I came across it, during the preparation of a research paper on Claire de Duras’ novel Ourika (1823). In a few lines, W.E.B. Du Bois captures the essence of racial, colonial and postcolonial problems and raises awareness on questions that Toussaint Louverture, Joseph-Anténor Firmin, and Aimé Césaire, among others, also addressed in their writings. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s.

    FOREWORD | Lau RenT Dubois “I would have far preferred to write on Toussaint L’Ouverture,” C. L. R. James wrote wearily in 1931. He had, instead, been forced to respond at length to a racist article published by the eminent Dr. Sidney Harland, an English sci- entist teaching at the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad. The “scientist” had, among other things, ranked Toussaint Louverture in his classificatory scheme as a member of “Class F,” the “lowest of the superior classes.” In other words, James seethed, Harland thought the world was quite full of men like Louverture: “He will pick a Toussaint from every tree.” But, as James insisted in his response—and as he would show in the coming de- cade within brilliant works of theatre and history—there was really only one Louverture. And there was no way to twist reality around so thoroughly as to make him proof of racial inferiority. Louverture’s story, and those of the events and people who made it, must serve as inspiration—and as a weapon. It was in this 1931 article (“The Intelligence of the Negro,” reprinted in the appendix), that James first took on a task that in a way became one of his great life missions: wresting the story of Louverture, and of Haiti, away from those in Europe and North America who for too long had distorted it— turning it into a cautionary or ironic tale, using it to create an intriguing whiff of exoticism, or (all too often, as in Harland’s case) employing it as a justification for racism.

    The Haitian Revolution The Haitian Revolution was a social and political upheaval in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (which shared the island of Hispaniola with the Spanish colony of Santo Domingo) during the period from 1791 to 1804. In 1791, slaves and gens de couleur libres (“free people of color”) rebelled against French rule, and in 1804 declared their country’s independence under the original Arawak name of Haiti. The Haitian Revolution was, along with the American Revolution, one of the most significant and dramatic challenges to European colonialism in the New World, and historians widely regard it as a milestone in the history of Africans in the Americas. The Haitian Revolution is, in fact, the only successful large-scale slave insurrection in history, and it is often seen as initiating the decline of the slave trade. Causes of the Haitian Revolution The colonial economy was export driven, dominated by agriculture and trade. Saint- Domingue, with its tropical climate, was developed as a coffee- and sugar-producing colony, and sustained many large and profitable plantations. By the second half of the 18th century, sugar and coffee were two of the world’s most traded commodities, and Saint-Domingue produced over 60 percent of the world’s coffee and 40 percent of the world’s sugar. This made Saint-Domingue France’s most profitable plantation colony. To meet the growing needs of this plantation system, Saint-Domingue’s colonists continuously expanded the number of slaves. Thus, the colonial economy fueled the social imbalance that led to the revolution. Colonial society, a racist society, was at fault, in part through its own rigidity.

Un héros même, Monsieur le baron de Vastey! —René Philoctète, Monsieur de Vastey If the Haiti of Walcott, Miller, Césaire, Hammerman, and Rodman, is a Haiti isolated by its own leaders, Philoctète’s Monsieur de Vastey shows a country highly connected to and controlled by its formal colonial occu- pier, France, as well as by other regional powers with interests in Haiti, including the United States and Great Britain. Although Philoctète por- trays these countries as manifestly interested in the country, his depiction of the essential connectedness of Haiti to the rest of the world does not revel in blame. The play embraces a central understanding of the colonial relation as necessarily global, enabling its author to simultaneously critique both Haitian political leaders and the world powers that circumscribed their abilities to effectively lead the country. Philoctète shows that one can engage in this kind of analysis without asserting one defnitive cause for Haiti’s ongoing political woes.
