  • Stir Music Credits
Music Cameron Allan music conductor Chris Nichols Cameron Allan is an under-rated composer who began working during the Australian revival (and often working with Chris Nichols as conductor, though Nichols is credited as Nicolls on Jim Sharman's adaptation of Patrick White's The Night the Prowler). Allan was inclined to the "less is more" style of screen music, in contrast to say Brian May's notion of "more can never be enough, more please" style. Allan was also inclined to exotic instrumentation suggesting Asian influences. Both tendencies can be seen in his work for Stir, and it has a moderating influence on any tendency to drift towards melodrama. Ben Goldsmith made these astute comments on use of music in the film: The use of music … throughout the film is … noteworthy. Music is rare in the film, but it is used extremely effectively. It is heard for the first time at the end of this scene (the opening stylised sequence shot with a blue filter) providing a bridge to the title sequence that follows. Cameron Allan's score is minimalist in style, consisting solely of short repeated phrases, often only one or two notes, on pizzicato strings or piano, often accompanied by a variety of percussion instruments - chimes, wooden blocks, rattles - suggesting the characteristic soundscape of the institution: the ominous, oppressive rhythm of officers' footsteps along cell block corridors, bolts clanging, keys jangling, doors slamming, sirens wailing. It is not until the end credit sequence that the music comes anywhere near a pleasant melody, but even here the piano is hesitant, with notes allowed to reverberate as we contemplate the rioters' fate.

  • 35 Jim Sharman's the Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
‘G IVE YOURSELVES OVER TO ABSOLUTE PLEASURE ’: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW ’S QUEERING OF COUNTERCULTURE FILM Monica MICHLIN Université Paris IV - Sorbonne Jim Sharman’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), the filmic adaptation of the Richard O’Brien musical, stands out among other musical films of the counter-culture. It is remarkable for its excess, its energy, its humor, its mocking of traditional gender codes and its pronounced taste for the “visually abysmal” both in the meaning of camp and its mise en abyme of icons of both high and low visual culture—from Michelangelo’s David to Charles Atlas ads, and from Frankenstein (James Whale, 1931) to King Kong (Cooper and Schoedsack, 1933) to The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939)—in a pastiche and parody of genre films. While it is, itself, a hodge-podge of musical 1 and horror story, a warped romantic comedy and a science fiction farce, it deploys its unique countercultural energy in its Dionysian celebration of its queer main character, Dr. Frank’n’Furter, a transvestite avatar of Dr. Frankenstein, played by Tim Curry. In highlighting how its queering of genres is meshed with the queering of gender, and the hedonistic celebration of “performance,” I will stress how the film’s deliberately provocative visual and narrative techniques, as well as its constant celebration of excess and chaos prompt the audience to warp it in turn and, in a mise en abyme of the carnivalesque, to break down the fourth wall in the way fan communities started to do one year after the film’s release, in midnight performances, arguably making it to this day the ultimate cult film of the mid-seventies.

Compiled by Pat S.P. Fitzgerald, Kelly Fitzgerald and Andy Clark Much like a pocket phrase book you carry when traveling abroad, one should never attend a Transylvanian Convention without their handy dandy Call Back Guide to get you through. Usually it is considered rude to speak during a movie, but a true RHPS fan knows it considered rude not to speak back to the screen. In addition, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a universal underground success; and at all screenings you might find a visitor from the Transexual Galaxy sitting next to you. So do not be surprised at the cultural and generational differences evidenced by a cacophony of call backs. Some Call Backs are out-of-date; some are regional, national or even galactic specific. Do not be concerned or put off. Indeed, if yours are different from ours, and if we hear yours and like it, you might just find yours included it in our next guide! So call back proudly!
