  • Sha Tau Kok Confirmed As an Important Butterfly Hotspot in Hong Kong
Press Release 7 October 2012 Sha Tau Kok Confirmed as an Important Butterfly Hotspot in Hong Kong Since the Frontier Closed Area at Sha Tau Kok being opened up during 2012, Green Power has been conducting butterfly surveys in the area. So far, 97 species have been recorded, representing 35% of the total number of species in Hong Kong. Among these, 9 are rare species and 4 are very rare. Sha Tau Kok has been a closed area for nearly 60 years. There was no study of the local butterfly ecology until February 2012, when the area was opened. The site is now recognized as an important butterfly hotspot of Hong Kong, with rich diversity. Rare species recorded Apart from the high diversity of butterflies at Sha Tau Kok, there are many notable species. For example, our Butterfly Surveyors recently recorded Euthalia niepelti, which had not been sighted after being first recorded in Fung Yuen, Tai Po, in July 2011. Sha Tau Kok is the second site where the species has been found. In addition, the very rare Large Banded Swift (Pelopidas subochraceus) and Forget-me- not (Catochrysops strabo) were also found. The former has a narrow distribution in Hong Kong – in Ngau Tam Mei and Nga Kai Shan, Yuen Long; and Fung Yuen, Tai Po. The Sha Tau Kok discovery is a new addition to the database. Forget-me-not was once a common species in Hong Kong but became very rare in the past decade for unknown reason. Besides Sha Tau Kok, it is also found at other survey sites including San Tau, Tung Chung; Wu Kau Tang, Tai Po; and Sham Chung and Yung Shue O, Sai Kung.

  • 4. Ecological Impact
Consultancy Agreement No. NEX/2301 South Island Line (East) Environmental Impact Assessment 4. Ecological Impact 4.1 Background This Chapter addresses the potential ecological impacts arising from the construction and operation of the proposed South Island Line (East) and the associated magazine site and barging points. It presented the findings of the literature review and supplementary field surveys conducted from June 2008 to November 2009. The potential impacts to the ecological sensitive receivers within the Assessment Area were assessed and suitable mitigation measures were proposed to minimise the potential adverse impact in accordance with Annexes 8 and 16 of the Technical Memorandum on the Environmental Impact Assessment Process of the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance. 4.2 Assessment Area The Assessment Area for ecological impact assessment covers an area of 500m radius along the proposed alignment of the South Island Line (East), associated work sites and areas for slope stabilisation work, magazine site and barging points ( Figure 4.1 ). The methodology and the transect routes for the ecological baseline assessment are presented in Appendix 4.1 and Figures A1-10 in Appendix 4. 4.3 Environmental Legislation, Standards and Guidelines A number of international conventions, local legislations and guidelines provide the framework for the protection of species and habitats of ecological importance. Those related to this Project are: Forests and Countryside Ordinance (Cap. 96), which prohibits felling, cutting, burning or destroying of trees and growing plants in forests and plantations on Government land. The subsidiary Forestry Regulations (Cap. 96 sub. leg.) prohibit the picking, felling or possession of listed rare and protected plant species.

  • The North Face 100® Hong Kong
The North Face 100® Hong Kong TNF 100 and TNF 50 Hong Kong Route Descriptions: Both the 50 km and 100 km races start at 8 AM on Saturday, December 12th inside the Tai Mei Tuk car park in the Northern New Territories of Hong Kong SAR. Baggage check will take place by the Bradbury Camp Youth Hostel. Race assembly will take place on the bicycle path near Bradbury Camp. TNF 100 and TNF 50 Section 1: Tai Mei Tuk/Pat Sing Leng Nature Trail/Wu Kau Tang Approximate distance ~ 6.6 km Total elevation gain ~ 400 meters Total elevation loss ~ 315 meters Racers will run out the bicycle path and turn right onto Bride’s Pool Road for approximately 1 km. The course turns left by the AFCD/Plover Cove Visitor Center and onto Pat Sing Leng Nature Trail. The course continues along a footpath approximately 1.5 meters wide and gains altitude steadily. There are occasional breaks in the forest that afford views to the right of Plover Cove Reservoir. After attaining a height of land at about 300 meters, the path descends to an intersection where the Wilson Trail splits off to the left and racers continue on the Pat Sin Leng Nature Trail to the right. Following a descent, a stream crossing, a short climb and steeper descent on stone stairs, the course arrives at Bride’s Pool Road. Although the race organizer and the police will manage traffic control, racers should cross the road with caution. The road is also popular with cyclists who tend to disregard instructions to give way to runners crossing the road.

  • Remote Sensing-Based Estimation of Carbon Sequestration in Hong Kong Country Parks from 1978 to 2004 Claudio O
Open Environmental Sciences, 2009, 3, 97-115 97 Open Access Remote Sensing-Based Estimation of Carbon Sequestration in Hong Kong Country Parks from 1978 to 2004 Claudio O. Delang* and Yu Yi Hang Department of Geography and Resource Management, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, NT, Hong Kong Abstract: This paper estimates the amount of carbon sequestered by vegetation and soil in the country parks of Hong Kong from 1978 to 2004. It does so by comparing satellite images of each country park from 1978, 1991, 1997, and 2004, and calculating the area of woodland, scrubland, and grassland in each image. The amount of carbon sequestered in both vegetation and soil is then estimated using aggregate data from other studies. This study shows that there was little overall ecological succession in the country parks from 1978 to 2004, but the amount of carbon sequestered doubled during that period. The paper concludes that limitations in the quality of the satellite images and in the data used to quantify the carbon sequestered by vegetation and soil call for more research before this method is used for policy planning. Green Lifestyle Local Tour Incentive Scheme Guide to Application1 (Application Period: 20 January 2020 to 15 April 2022) I. Introduction 1. The Green Lifestyle Local Tour Incentive Scheme is funded by the HKSAR Government and provides travel agents with cash incentives based on the number of green lifestyle local tour participants they serve. 2. The Scheme is initiated by the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, the Environment Bureau and the Environmental Protection Department, with the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong (TIC) to assist in implementation. It aims to encourage the public to enjoy nature, promote nature conservation and biodiversity, and raise public awareness of the HKSAR Government’s efforts in promoting green lifestyle and tourism, waste and carbon reduction, environmental protection and nature conservation, etc.; promote local economic activities; and support the tourism and related industries. 3. Applicants should read the following information carefully before submitting their applications. II. Eligibility of Applicants 1. The Applicant must be a travel agent that fulfils the following two conditions concurrently: (1) holding on 23 December 2019 (i.e. the date on which the HKSAR Government jointly with the TIC announced the Green Lifestyle Local Tour Incentive Scheme) a valid travel agent’s licence issued under the Travel Agents Ordinance; and (2) continuing to hold a valid travel agent’s licence when cash incentives are disbursed by the TIC to the travel agent. 1 Note: This Guide to Application should be read in conjunction with Application Form A, Application Form B, as well as Appendix I and Appendix II. 1 III.
