The collections of Francillon, Drury, MacLeay, Sir J. Banks, and Donovan, contained almost all that was then known of Indian Entomo- logy, with which our Continental neighbours were then, as still, comparatively ignorant. To these collections, examined b}f Fabricius himself, Donovan had free access, and his figures of the insects therein contained, which had served as types for the descriptions of the Entomologist of Kiel, are especially valuable. The progress of Entomology, as a science, has so much advanced, as to render a that its republication of this work advisable ; at the same time, however, requiring original Linnasan style should not be retained, but that it should be brought down to the present state of science. -

Altogether, 8 species under 3 subfamilies are already reported from Sunderban Biosphere Reserve. Present communication reports Batocera rufomaculata (De Geer, 1775) for the first time from this Biosphere reserve. Keywords: Sunderban Biosphere Reserve, Cerambycidae, Lamiinae, Batocera Introduction Sunderban region in India is 9600 sq km (4200 sq km of Reserved Forest and 5400 sq km of non-forest, inhabited region) which constitutes the Sunderban Biosphere Reserve (SBR). Indian Sunderban is bound on the west by river Muriganga and on the east by rivers Harinbhahga and Raimangal. Administrative boundary of the Sunderban is spread over two districts i.e. North 24-Parganas (Hingalganj, Hasnabad, Haroa, Sandeskhali - I,II, and Minakhan blocks) and South 24-Parganas (Sagar, Namkhana, Kakdwip, Patharpratima, Kultali, Mathurapur-I,II, Jaynagar-I,II, Canning-I,II, Basanti and Gosaba blocks).The extent of mangrove Reserve Forests in Indian Sunderban is around 4260 sq km, out of which 55% is under land vegetation cover and balance 45% is under water body/ inter-tidal zone. Studies on beetles and weevils (Coleoptera) in Sunderban region is very poor. -

Red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier, is one of the most destructive pests harming palm trees. However, genomic resources for R. ferrugineus are still lacking, limiting the ability to discover molecular and genetic means of pest control. Methods. In this study, PacBio Iso-Seq and Illumina RNA-seq were used to generate transcriptome from three developmental stages of R. ferrugineus (pupa, 7th-instar larva, adult) to increase the understanding of the life cycle and molecular characteristics of the pest. Results. Sequencing generated 625,983,256 clean reads, from which 63,801 full-length transcripts were assembled with N50 of 3,547 bp. Expression analyses revealed 8,583 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). INTRODUCTION BY G. TALBOT. It is important to know exactly where type specimens are to be found. The British Museum set an example by publishing catalogues of some of their Rhopalocera types, and we hope this will be continued. Mr. Gabriel, who was responsible for that work, has been asked by Mr. Joicey to prepare a catalogue for the Hill Museum. The original description of almost every name in this catalogue has been examined for the correct reference, and where the sex or habitat was wrongly quoted, the necessary correction has been made. -

BOURGOIN (Moulignon, France) Qu'il me soit permis d'adresser ici mes remercîments à M. le Dr Yan Straelen pour la confiance qu'il m'a témoignée en me confiant l'étude des Cétonides recueillis par LL. AA. RR. le Prince Léopold et la Princesse A'strid de Belgique au cours de leur voyage aux Indes néerlandaises. J'ai énuméré les genres et les espèces dans l'ordre qui m'a semblé le plus logique, sans tenir compte des divisions en groupes et en tribus, car un même genre est souvent placé, selon les auteurs qui l'ont étudié, tantôt dans l'un, tantôt dans l'autre de ces groupes et tribus. Cette classification, basée parfois sur un caractère commun peu important, conduit à des groupements qui sont loin d'être naturels; un entomologue mettra les Clinteria parmi les Oxythyréides, un autre parmi les Gymnétides; tel auteur trouve que certains Elaphinis sont des Goliathides, un autre crée pour eux une section : les Elaphinides, dans laquelle il case les Trymodera et les Phonotaenia. On pourrait multiplier ces exemples qui prouvent que ces groupements n'ont qu'une importance très secondaire, mais peuvent induire en erreur en laissant supposer, entre certains genres, une affinité qui n'existe pas. J'ajoute à ce travail quelques remarques concernant des espèces affines, non récoltées par l'expédition belge. Seules celles rapportées par celle-ci sont numé¬ rotées. 4 f A. There are two recognised morphotypes of the species: the typical green form, with pink to cupreous head and part of the legs and the uniformly white to pale brown form. There are other Central and South American species of Compsus and related genera of similar appearance that make it challenging to provide accurate identifications of introduced species at ports of entry. New information Here, we re-describe the species, provide images of the habitus, miscellaneous morphological structures and male and female genitalia. Chapter 6 The Early Evolution of Biting–Chewing Performance in Hexapoda Alexander Blanke Abstract Insects show a plethora of different mandible shapes. It was advocated that these mandible shapes are mainly a function of different feeding habits. This hypothesis was tested on a larger sampling of non-holometabolan biting–chewing insects with additional tests to understand the interplay of mandible function, feeding guild, and phylogeny. The results show that at the studied systematic level, variation in mandible biting–chewing effectivity is regulated to a large extent by phylogenetic history and the configuration of the mandible joints rather than the food preference of a given taxon. Additionally, lineages with multiple mandibular joints such as primary wingless hexapods show a wider functional space occupation of mandibular effectivity than dicondylic insects (¼ silverfish + winged insects) at significantly different evolutionary rates. The evolution and occupation of a compa- rably narrow functional performance space of dicondylic insects is surprising given the low effectivity values of this food uptake solution. Possible reasons for this relative evolutionary “stasis” are discussed. 6.1 Introduction Insecta sensu lato (¼ Hexapoda) display a high diversity of mouthpart shapes within the early evolved lineages which started to radiate approximately 479 million years ago (Misof et al. 2014). These shape changes were described qualitatively and were often stated to relate mainly to the type of food consumed (Yuasa 1920; Isely 1944; Evans and Forsythe 1985; Chapman and de Boer 1995). To the knowledge of the author, this and related statements regarding mouthpart mechanics being shaped by functional demands have never been tested in a quantitative framework.
