7 EW’S BREWCART By: Eric Worthington

Problem: Keeping all my brewing equipment together and organized. I tend to run around a lot on brewdays fetching what I need from here or there. My previous brewstand I built had most everything attached to it, but after the move I no longer have it. And I plan a different setup. Being mobile for me is idea, wheel everything out and then wheel it all back in. I had the idea of converting a Rubbermaid Commercial Cart for this use. They are rather expensive new (around $300 at HomeDepot) and I just happened to score one off Craigslist for $25.

Solution: A all-in-one system for filtering water, storing hardware and mounting both a march pump and plate chiller to to keep things in easy to use positions during extension cord, old work 2-gang brewday. Tools: switch box, red dot waterproof Here’s how I did it. Depending on Drill that can accept up to a 3/8th’s switch plate, GFI outlet, 3/8ths what your budget allows, buy a bit, Wire strippers/cutters, ratchet x 1” bolts w/ washers and nuts new or used Rubbermaid Cart. You to mount), I believe I used ¼” can use a metal cart if you wish, bolts for the march pump, 4oz but these directions are for how Thompson water sealer, small tube I built mine. You will need some Materials: of clear silicone sealer. 4 clamps, woodworking knowledge (or know Cart, drill bits (3/8ths and small either C clamps or trigger clamps someone who can spend a bit of enough to bore pilot holes for and you’ll need small zip ties as time helping you out) and basic your screws), ½” plywood with a well. household wiring knowledge. nice veneer (Baltic Ply is ideal),

This went much faster than Relax, it’s just a cord. Thread the repeating the marking off of the cord up through the hole and panel again. through the gang box opening, finish wiring up the switch. Other Steps: Step 11: Mount the Red Dot plate. This part is what took me awhile to figure out. Look at the directions Step 1: Now you may be asking, that came with the plate, you have what about shelves and splash to modify the switch by cutting off guards. The splash guard is pretty the metal plate above and below easy. Determine the width you the box of the switch. Sounds want the guard to cover. Then the crazy, I know. But here’s why, the length of it and the side piece. switch has more mounting holes Make 1 cut (so it’s all nice and neat

10 and uniform), then a 2nd cut to separate the top from the side. Using wood glue, attach the 2 using a butt joint (just end to end). I clamped this and let it dry overnight, or you can use screws as well. Make sure you drill a pilot hole as the screw will blow the plywood open when going in on an end.

Step 2: Attaching to the wall. Do NOT use glue, you may have to access your march pump bolts at some time and if this is glued to the face of the panel you’ll have to take a hammer and bust it off. What I did was to take the splash guard and a small level and position it. Then take a pencil and mark off the top, sides and bottoms of the guard onto the wall. When you pull the guard away, you’ll see an outline of where it’ll be. Then using your pilot bit, drill from the outside through the panel. Now, position the guard back in place and drill from the inside out and into the guard. This is a pain to do, but this way you’re going to be dead set, just make sure the drill bit is perpendicular to the panel so the screws go straight into the board, not at an angle. Then screw the piece into place. In the above photo you can see 4 small screws next to the four big bolts for the march pump. That’s what these are for. I also left enough space next to the plate chiller so the chiller can be inverted for drying in its same bracket and not interfere with the march pump splash guard.

Step 3: I did the same thing for the Hop Rocket as the splash guard except: the tray will hold weights so I created some bracing underneath plus some lips to keep the Hop Rocket from sliding off. I used much longer screws (and this a larger pilot bit) to help secure the shelf to the face. I used 7 long screws all together, plus 4 small recessed ones to attach the plate to the braces.

The shelf also sticks out far enough to act as a bumper to protect the high value equipment. Note: The Rocket won’t be stored here.

This was fun to build and cost about $100. I already had a bit of the material lying around so your cost my vary.

Cheers, EW
