  • The Evolution of the UK Wine Market: from Niche to Mass-Market Appeal
beverages Article The Evolution of the UK Wine Market: From Niche to Mass-Market Appeal Julie Bower Independent Scholar, Worcester WR1 3DG, UK; [email protected] Received: 4 October 2018; Accepted: 8 November 2018; Published: 12 November 2018 Abstract: This article is an historic narrative account of the emergence of the mass-market wine category in the UK in the post-World War II era. The role of the former vertically-integrated brewing industry in the early stages of development is described from the perspective of both their distributional effects and their new product development initiatives. Significant in the narrative is the story of Babycham, the UK’s answer to Champagne that was targeted to the new consumers of the 1950s; women. Then a specially-developed French wine, Le Piat D’Or, with its catchy advertising campaign, took the baton. These early brands were instrumental in extending the wine category, as beer continued its precipitous decline. That the UK is now one of the largest wine markets globally owes much to the success of these early brands and those that arrived later in the 1990s, with Australia displacing France as the source for mass-market appeal. Keywords: UK wine consumption; UK brewing industry; resource partitioning theory; targeted marketing 1. Introduction The evolution of wine consumption in the UK is described by important socio-economic trends in consumer behavior that emerged in the 1950s. This coincided with a growing awareness within the alcoholic beverages industry that there was the need for new product development to satisfy the increasingly sophisticated and aspirational consumer.

Grab an accessible menu HE WASN’T ALWAYS RED. BUT HE’S ALWAYS BEEN THIRSTY. Here’s the story of our tree frog, a little guy with a big personality who traded in the rain in the forest for some fun in the sun. He’s been living aboard Carnival ships, making new friends along the way in his pubs, and life is good. So why’s he red? Some say it’s because he takes that “paint the town” saying a little too seriously. Others say his redness comes from all those deliciously lazy days in the sun. Traveling from port to port, soaking it in up on that huge red funnel of ours. But we know it’s all about that free-spirited, vivacious will of his—to live life to the fullest. Quite a story, but hey, he’s quite a frog. And inspired by fun conversation with great friends looking for some awesome new brews to tempt their beer-loving palates, The Frog has become quite the craft brewer! He’s having a ball playing with his own secret flavors and is now producing some of the best brews you’ve ever had. Right here. So we welcome you to his coolest new hangout, the RedFrog® Pub & Brewery. Where the brews are fresh, the music’s good and the island atmosphere is super chill. Sit. Relax. Stay awhile. LIVE THIRSTY® BREWERY TOUR The Frog loves to brag about what he brews. We welcome all our new friends to see how he does it, and sample some awesome beers along the way.

  • On Tap Lancaster Liederkranz Beer News February 6, 2019
On Tap Lancaster Liederkranz Beer News February 6, 2019 German Pils fans have some interesting taps to pick from. Einbecker Brauherren Pils is a perfect composition of the best hops and selected fine malts bringing the classic bitter character of Einbecker Premium Pils to mature perfection. With a bigger malt bill than its little brother (11.4% vs 11.2% O/G), the Brauherren is slightly stronger at 4.9% vs 4.8% ABV. This classic from the “Brewing Lords” of Einbeck is a delightful, traditional pils. Crisp and refreshing, it’s the perfect accompaniment to lunch or dinner. Brewhouse Grill owners Norm Fromm and Larry Dolan opened Ever Grain Brewing Company in 2016 in the former Sun Motors facility off Carlisle Pike in Camp Hill. Since then, they have developed a fine reputation in the central PA beer scene. Brewer Bruce Tanner was recently joined by Austrian Manuela Rustler, a Doeman’s brewing school graduate who had stints at Hofstetten and Paulaner as well as Boxing Cat Brewery in Shanghai. It is anticipated that she will focus more on sour beers as well as provide input to the classical lagers which Ever Grain does particularly well. The Ever Grain Camp Pils is a 5.0% ABV German style Pilsner. Well balanced, it’s slightly hoppy with a dry malt finish. Brewing tradition in Donaueschingen reaches back to 1283 when King Rudolf I von Habsburg granted lands and brewing rights to Count Heinrich I von Fürstenberg. The “modern” history of the Furstenberg Brewery began in 1739 and production really picked up in 1884 when master brewer Josef Munz took over.
