Abstract: Elevenlemonbalm(Melissaofficinalis L.)populationsoriginatingfromdifferentsourcesinTurkeyandEuropeancountries wereinvestigatedintwoecologicallydifferentlocations,MenemenandBozda¤,intheAegeanregionofTurkeyoverthreeyears to determinethepopulationshavinghighqualityandyield.Thereweresignificantvariationsbetweenlocations,yearsandpopulat ions intermsofyieldandqualitycharacters.TheecologywashighlysuitableinMenemenforgrowinglemonbalmsuccessfullyandalmost allyieldandqualitycharactersinMenemenweresignificantlyhigherthanthoseinBozda¤.Theheight,greenyield, drug leavesyieldandessentialoilrateoverpopulationsandyearswere47.58cm,2869kg.ha-1,496.9kg.ha-1 and0.067%respectively inMenemenwhiletheywere20.73cm,416kg.ha -1,90.0kg.ha-1 and0.036%respectivelyinBozda¤.Thegrowthofpopulations inthisstudyincreasedafterthefirstyearofthetrialsinbothlocations;thereforeallyieldsweresignificantlyhigherin thesecond andthirdyearsofthetrialscomparedtothefirstyear.Thepopulationsnumbered9and7,originatingfromGermanyandRomania, hadhighyieldandqualityandtheywerethetwomostpromisingpopulationsforlemonbalmcultivationinthelocationsstudied . Thegreenherbyield,drugleavesyieldandessentialoilrateofpopulation9overthreeyearsatMenemenwere3389kg.ha-1,593.1 kg.ha-1 and0.085%respectivelywhiletheywere2888kg.ha-1,565.1kg.ha-1 and0.097%respectivelyforpopulation7.Themain componentoftheessentialoilofthelemonbalmwasgeranialinbothlocationsandtheaveragegeranialratewas38.13%in Menemenand53.68%inBozda¤.Hence,Menemenecologicconditionsweresuitableforgrowinglemonbalmwithhighyieldand quality.PopulationsoriginatingfromRomaniaandEgeUniversityAgriculturalFaculty(Germany)arerecommendedtogrowers.

Populasyondan9’unMenemen'dey›llarüzerindenyeflilherbaverimi,drogyaprakverimiveuçucuya¤oran›s›ras›ile3389kg.ha - 1,593,1kg.ha-1 ve%0,085olarakbulunurken;7nolupopulasyoniçinayn›de¤erlers›ras›ile2888kg.ha -1,565,1kg.ha-1 ve% 0,097olarakbulunmufltur.Herikilokasyondadauçucuya¤›nanabilefleniningeranialoldu¤utespitedilmifltir.Y›llarvepopulasyonlar üzerindenortalamade¤erolarakuçucuya¤dakigeranialoran›Menemen'de%38,13,Bozda¤'daise%53,68olaraksaptanm›flt›r. SonuçolarakMenemenekolojikkoflullar›n›nverimvekalitesiyükseko¤ulotuyetifltiricili¤iiçinuygunoldu¤u,özellikleRomany ave EgeÜniversitesiZiraatFakültesi(Almanya)orijinlipopulasyonlar›nüreticilereönerilebilece¤ibelirlenmifltir.

fromsouthernEurope,Minorandsouthernpartsof MaterialsandMethods NorthAmerica(Simonetal.,1984;Ceylan,1997). Materials Lemonbalmpopulationsaredistributedinall Mediterraneancountriesincludingthecoastalregionsof Theseedsof11lemonbalmpopulationsobtained TurkeyandsouthernAlpineregions(Baytop,1984; fromdifferentsourceswerecomparedinthisstudy Ceylan,1997).Therearethreesubspeciesof M. Maliketal.(1972),the0.068%reportedbyÖzay Populations8,10and11hadhighplantheightand (1990),the0.077%and0.23%reportedbyCeylanet greenherbyieldatMenemen.Thisresultmightbe al.(1994aandb)andthe0.141%reportedbyT›nmaz expectedsincethesepopulationswerewildpopulations (1999).Ontheotherhand,ourresultsfortheoilrate distributedintheAegeanregionofTurkey.However, weresimilartothe0.1-0.015%oilratereportedby theyhadlowdrugleavesyieldandessentialoilrate, Baytop(1984),the0.02%reportedbyK›r›meretal. becausethesepopulationswerewildandnotbredfor (1995)andthe0.03-0.47%reportedbyÖzgüvenetal. highleavesandoilrate. (1999).Meanwhile,theessentialoilratesofthe populationshadsignificantdifferencesfromyeartoyear.
