Portuguese language in Angola: luso-creoles' missing link? John M. Lipski {presented at annual meeting of the AATSP, San Diego, August 9, 1995} 0. Introduction Portuguese explorers first reached the Congo Basin in the late 15th century, beginning a linguistic and cultural presence that in some regions was to last for 500 years. In other areas of Africa, Portuguese-based creoles rapidly developed, while for several centuries pidginized Portuguese was a major lingua franca for the Atlantic slave trade, and has been implicated in the formation of many Afro- American creoles. The original Portuguese presence in southwestern Africa was confined to limited missionary activity, and to slave trading in coastal depots, but in the late 19th century, Portugal reentered the Congo-Angola region as a colonial power, committed to establishing permanent European settlements in Africa, and to Europeanizing the native African population. In the intervening centuries, Angola and the Portuguese Congo were the source of thousands of slaves sent to the Americas, whose language and culture profoundly influenced Latin American varieties of Portuguese and Spanish. Despite the key position of the Congo-Angola region for Ibero-American linguistic development, little is known of the continuing use of the Portuguese language by Africans in Congo-Angola during most of the five centuries in question. Only in recent years has some attention been directed to the Portuguese language spoken non-natively but extensively in Angola and Mozambique (Gonçalves 1983). In Angola, the urban second-language varieties of Portuguese, especially as spoken in the squatter communities of Luanda, have been referred to as Musseque Portuguese, a name derived from the KiMbundu term used to designate the shantytowns themselves. -

Quichua-Spanish Language Contact in Salcedo, Ecuador: Revisiting Media Lengua Syncretic Language Practices
QUICHUA-SPANISH LANGUAGE CONTACT IN SALCEDO, ECUADOR: REVISITING MEDIA LENGUA SYNCRETIC LANGUAGE PRACTICES BY MARCO SHAPPECK DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2011 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Hans Henrich Hock, Director of Research Professor Rajeshwari Vijay Pandharipande, Chair Associate Professor Anna María Escobar Professor José Ignacio Hualde Abstract The purpose of the current thesis is to develop a better understanding of the interaction between Spanish and Quichua in the Salcedo region and provide more information for the processes that might have given rise to Media Lengua, a ‘mixed’ language comprised of a Quichua grammar and Spanish lexicon. Muysken attributes the formation of Media Lengua to relexification, ruling out any influence from other bilingual phenomena. I argue that the only characteristic that distinguishes Media Lengua from other language contact varieties in central Ecuador is the quantity of the overall Spanish borrowings and not the type of processes that might have been employed by Quichua speakers during the genesis of Media Lengua. The results from the Salcedo data that I have collected show how processes such as adlexification, code-mixing, and structural convergence produce Media Lengua-type sentences, evidence that supports an alternative analysis to Muysken’s relexification hypothesis. Overall, this dissertation is developed around four main objectives: (1) to describe the variation of Spanish loanwords within a bilingual community in Salcedo; (2) to analyze some of the prominent and recent structural changes in Quichua and Spanish; (3) to determine whether Spanish loanword use can be explained by the relationship consultants have with particular social categories; and (4) to analyze the consultants’ language ideologies toward syncretic uses of Spanish and Quichua. -

Jargons and Pidgins and Creoles, Oh My! by Emily Gray University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Linguistics, as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary, is “the science of studying language, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and historical linguistics” (OED.com). Within this field, the study of pidgin and creole languages is the source of much controversy and disagreement. Due to their divergence from typical linguistic features and development patterns, pidgins and creoles have long been ignored by the linguistics community. Considered by many to be “inferior, haphazard, broken” versions of “older, more established languages,” these so-called “bastard tongues” were written off as unworthy of study (Todd 1). Only recently have these forms of language garnered interest from linguistic scholars known as Creolists. -

The Phenomenon of Overregularization in Esperanto-Speaking Children
interlinguistics / interlingüística / interlinguistik / interlingvistiko Regularizing the regular The phenomenon of overregularization in Esperanto-speaking children Renato Corsetti, Maria Antonietta Pinto and Maria Tolomeo Università di Roma La Sapienza This article deals with the phenomenon of overregularization in a language already extremely regular, i.e. Esperanto, in children who are learning it as their mother tongue together with one or two other national languages. It consists of an analysis of the diaries kept by Esperanto-speaking parents, tracing the development of five children who were brought up speaking Esperanto as one of their two or three mother-tongues. The children were all of European origin, and their ages ranged from one to five years. The dif- ferent forms of overregularization have been subdivided into three levels of complexity based on the number and type of morpheme compositions used, and the degree of semantic elaboration. Detailed comments are provided on the forms and meanings of the various examples representing each level, showing the correlation between the age of the children and the growing complexity of the forms. This study can be seen as a first step towards a more systematic analysis of the typologies of overregularization specific to this cat- egory of early bilingual children and a better understanding of their language development profile. Introduction Overregularization in a language already extremely regular, i.e. Esperanto, in children who are learning it as their mother tongue together with one or two other national languages, is a particularly stimulating area of study, as can be inferred from the apparent contradiction between the two terms “overregularization” and “regular.” It can be broken down into three distinct disciplinary areas. -

4 Journal for EuroLinguistiX 11 (2014): 4-13 Jacques François Language and Geometry A Method for Comparing the Genealogical and Structural Relatedness between Pairs of European Languages Abstract In the second half of 19th century, two German linguists, August Schleicher and Johannes Schmidt, worked out a method of genealogical comparison of the Indo-European languages which crucially rested on inflectional morphology and phonology (so-called Stammbaum hypothesis by Schleicher) supplemented by wave-like spreading (so-called wave-hypothesis by Schmidt) of such properties amongst geographically neighbouring languages. First, this method is applied to four European languages: Dutch, English, French and German. Next, a list of 18 structural properties of the four languages is collected in order to assess the structural relatedness of each pair of languages. The two resulting charts turn out to be similar concerning the proximity between Dutch vs. German, but quite disparate concerning the latter vs. English and French. The structural chart is insightful, but weighting the collected structural properties (on the basis of criteria to be justified) might generate a differently shaped chart. Sommaire Dans la seconde moitié du 19e siècle, deux linguistes allemands, August Schleicher et Johannes Schmidt, ont élaboré une méthode de comparaison généalogique des langues indo-européennes essentiellement basée sur la morphologie flexionnelle et la phonologie (hypothèse du Stammbaum de Schleicher) complétée par une dissémination ‘ondulatoire’ (hypothèse de Schmidt) de propriétés de ce type entre des langues géographiquement voisines. En premier lieu, cette méthode est appliquée à quatre langues européennes : allemand, anglais, français et néerlandais. Ensuite, une liste de 18 propriétés structurales des quatre langues est établie afin de mesurer la proximité structurale entre celles-ci. -

Clancy Clements (Indiana University-Bloomington) As the title suggests, this collection of scholarly articles deals with non-plantation creoles, covers individual creoles, creoles in a region, creoles lexified by Spanish, palenques as the locus for creole formation/development, and archival documents as a source for better understanding the formation and development of Por- tuguese-lexified creoles in West Africa. In ‘The missing Spanish creole are still missing: Revisiting Afrogenesis and its implications for a coherent theory of creole genesis’ (pp.39–66), John McWhorter again weighs in on the complex question of the origins of these contact languages, with a focus on the Spanish-based creoles. Using socio-historical data and com- paring the evolution of various English-, French-, Portuguese-, and Spanish-lex- ified contact vernaculars, McWhorter lays out the hypothesis that these did not begin on plantations but rather in slave castles in West Africa, and were then transported to places where plantations already existed. For the Spanish creoles, this thesis is of particular relevance because in the last decade sociohistorical research has shown that there are increasingly fewer former Spanish colonies where one might expect a plantation creole to have emerged. One additional point seems relevant: the reason that there are no Portuguese-based creoles in Brazil (a question McWhorter raises at the end) may be due to what Schwartz (1985) doc- uments earlier in colonial Brazil: many African slaves worked in smaller commu- nities and had greater access to Portuguese. -

Curtius and Brugmann, boundaries and demarcations Juan Antonio Ennis∗ IdIHCS, UNLP-CONICET Abstract In this paper we provide an introduction to the two German texts translated for this issue of RAHL. These are two interventions by Georg Curtius and Karl Brugmann, dated in 1862 and 1885 respectively, both devoted to dealing with the complex relationship between philology and linguistics. To do so, we first sketch a review of different features of the discussion on the relationship between both disciplines throughout the 19th century in the German-speaking academic space. Then, we present some basic issues that should contribute to situate the texts in their own context. Key words: Georg Curtius, Karl Brugmann, Philology, Linguistics, Neogrammarians.
