lt7t THE CHRISTIAN REGISTER: THE EDITOR'S FOREWORD During the 1950s and early '60s the precursor of this journal, The College of the Bible Quarterly, from time to time published reprintings of important Disciple historical materials. Some of our readers enjoyed this feature, and when the current editor returned to the editorial chair he was asked to resume this republication program. This issue is the first of what is hoped will be several ventures along this line. If you like this policy please let us know by writing and making suggestions. The Christian Register is, so far as can be determined, the first attempt of the Christian Churches to issue an international direc- tory in separate form. There had been lists of churches and minis- ters in several periodicals, The Christian Messenger, and The Mil· lennial Harbinger, for example, but no earlier attempt to list all churches, and most ministers (see the last page of this reprint) of the Restoration Movement has come down to us. This directory of 1848 is probably the first of all subsequent yearbooks and di- rectories. This is a rare work. This copy alone is recorded in the National Union Catalog, a publication of the Library of Congress that at- tempts to locate copies of all books in major American and Cana- dian libraries. There may be other copies but they are not avail- able to historians through the published bibliographies. It is, how- ever, listed in Claude E. Spencer's An Author Catalog of Disciples of Christ and Related Religious Groups; but the copy now at the Disciples of Christ Historical Society is a Xerox copy of the origi- nal at Lexington. Alexander Wilford Hall, 1819-1902, is listed as the minister of the congregation at Lloydsville, Ohio, as well as the editor of the Gospel Proclamation, a journal of "primitive Christianity" pub- lished 1847 to May 1849. (Several libraries own files of this peri. odical, and there may be copies of the directory appended to these periodicals as it was in our library.) Hall was a voluminous writer and editor and there are twenty-seven entries under his

0629 name in the National Union Catalog. There are a number of arti- cles listed in the indexes to the Christian-Evangelist and the Chris- tian Standard. He was a medical doctor according to some allu- sions, but he published a booklet on healing without medicine; he wrote and published on baptism, immortality, evolution, the physi- cal characteristics of sound, but, above all, as an opponent of uni- versalism. His Universalism Against Itself, first published in 1855, stated in the edition of 1883 that publication has reached 65,000 copies. There are many references to his work on universalism in Disciple periodicals, some as recently as 1950 in the Christian- Evangelist. No general biography of Dr. Hall has as yet been found, but he was living in when he died. There is a brief sketch of him in Who Was Who. The Christian Register has been extremely helpful to the library staff at Lexington Theological Seminary. It is a benchmark against which congregations and ministers can be checked. We hope that the rel}ders of this Quarterly find it helpful and interesting. Unfortunately, two of the pages of the original document would not reproduce legibly because of the dimness of the original print- ing. Accordingly, the unreadable portions of pages 32 and 35 have been recreated as accurately as possible and 'are printed on the page following the facsimile. ROSCOE M. The Register is now before the reader, for his inspection. The collection and -arrangement of the following statistics have been a matter of no ordinary amount of labor and perplexity; and are, we be)ieve, as nearly perfect, as was possible to have made th~rn under the. circumstances, single handed' and alone. We trust, howe\'er, that the Editing Brethren and Evangelists gener- ally will aid us in completing the work at its next issue, when we bope that all mistakes will be corrected, and all additional reports will be given in, wherever a full report has not been made, so that it may fully answer the end for which it was.intended. The .brethren have generally done well in helping us forward with the work, which favor we duly appreciate; yet one Editor, whose judgement is good in almost any thing, emphatlcallyl'e- fused to aid us even so much as to publish a notice of the work, from the fact that he considered it 8 sin! And why 1 Because David brought a curse upon the Jewish nation for number~ng bJ· rael! (2 Sam. 24: 10,-15.) From all the correspondence we have had on the subject, we find this to be the principal, if not the only objection against a record. of our numerical strength. We deem it expedient, therefore, to make a remark or two relative to this objection. • 1. In the first place, men, who make this objection, should. endeavor to ma.intll.in consistency. Yet the very Editor who first presented it~ can, without any consCientious scruples, publish such notices as the following:-"W~ were organized in 1840, with 27 members: we now number over 100, and meet "every Lord's day." Another writes-"Bro. M- labored for lis some ten days, during which time 22 were added to the Lord by bap- tism. We now have a fine church of 130members, and a good house of worship." [t is no sin to number one congregation, and publish that fact to the world, yet if we publish the stll.tlgtics of all the churches, it becomes sinful in the sight of Heaven! ! We would advise our Brother to cease publishing "news from the ehurch~s", until he can answer the objection he has made to tile Register. 2. The sin, in the case of David, clid not lie in the bare fact of numterlag Israel, but ill the moti've for which it was done. If the Brother will"take the trouble to read the first of that chapter, hf. will find that satan (see m:l.rgin~ was the originator of that a.ffair. No wonder, then, that the Lord did not approve of it! But if the sin lay in the fact of numbering Israel, then J ')shull. and Moges were both guilty before God. Let us see. "And the Lord spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying; number PREFACE. the children of Levi.-And Moses numbered them :l.ccording t@ the word of the Lord, as he had commanded him." (Num. 3: 14, 16.) Here we have divine authority for numbering' the people, which will certainly offset the other case. But we have said that the evil of numbering Israel consisted in the motive. Our mo- tiv@in getting up this Register, if we understand ourself, is for the consternation of the enemies of God's people, and the en- couragement of his faithful servants. Have w~ allY authority for ~is 1 We shall see. It appears that Elijah, the servnnt of God. was in great distress, supposing that· he was left alone, and that all Israel'had turned to the worE>hipof idols, which caused his en- emies to rejoice. But the Lord himself numbered his people, and ga\"e Elijah!\. statiiiltical report, that there were 'seven thousand men in Isratl" that had not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. These glad tidings strengthened the old prophet's heart. 3. But suppose it had been forbidden in the old jewish econo- my, to number Israel, (which we see is not the fact,) what au- thority would that have now, since the old covenant has been abol- ished 1 Our Brother certainly does not wish us to imitate our Pedo-Baptirst friends, by going back to the old covenant for direc- tions how to proceed in the new! But you may ask UB for our authority.for numbering the disciples of Christ in the New Tes- tament. Well, here it is, at the very commencement. . 'The number of the names together was abo11t12(}." Ac.ts 1: 15. "And the same day there were added unto them about 3000 souls." Acts 2: 41. "Howbeit, many of them which heard the word believed, and the number of the men wail. about 5000." (Acts 4: 4.) Thus the Apostles kept a statistical report of their numencalstrength, and the increase of their numbers, and we conceive we have a right to do the same. In the Revelations the Teport is cal'iied out to a still greater extent. "I looked, and La! a Lamb stood on the lVIt.Sion, a.nd ""ith him an hundred and for- I,y four thou.-sund." (Rev. 14: 1.) In another place we read ofl2000 being sealed out of each tribe of Israel; uQc1 still farther on in the future, we are informed that those engaged in the service of God were numbered and found to be "Ten thousand l1:mesten thousand and thousands of thousands,' [Rev. 5: 11.) until finally there was "a great multitude, which no man could. number," (Rev. 7: 9.) and here ill where the Christian Register must necessarily come to a close. \Vith daese thoughts we submit tIle Register to the brother- hood, hoping that it may, in some measure, facilitate the spread of truth, or at least,' that it will prov.e no hindrance to the on- wa.rd cause of our blessed )"lastcl'.
