Vice is doing a series of documentaries about the heavier aspects of the history of Pro Wrestling called The Dark Side of the Ring. These docs are taking a look at tragedies in the wrestling, and there are quite a few to choose from. The first one they released, and one of the finest true crime docs if you like the human side instead of the hard core investigative side, is about Bruiser Brody. And thus, having finished watching it, I realized I’d never done an issue dedicated to him. This issue, more than any other Claims Department I’ve ever done, will be the story of what it means to be a genius, to live in a world that has rules that are not those of the outside world. This is a story of an American who was a giant star in Japan, partly because he had so much trouble getting along with promoters in the US. This issue tells the story of a man who was an incredibly brawler, who bled in so many matches, who helped re-define what brawling was in an era when wrestling was completely being redefined. He was also an amazing wres- tler, could go on the ground , work a match that would make you believe he was a former Olympian. In short, it is the story of a man who was a master of his craft, and a man who knew he was a master of his craft. Yes, it has a tragic ending. In other news, I’m happy to report that the Boys are turning 4 shortly, and that’s a good thing! JP is reading. -

Not many people know this, but I’ve always considered myself an artist of sorts. Ever since I was a young kid, I invariably find myself passing the time by doodling, drawing, and, on occasion, even painting. In the space between my paper and pencil, and in those moments when inspiration would strike, my imagination would run amok and these bigger-than-life personas - football players and comic book characters and, of course, professional wrestlers - would come to life. I wasn’t aware of this until much later, but for all those years my mother would quietly steal away my drawings, saving them for all prosperity, and perhaps giving her a way to relive all of those memories of me as a child. That’s exactly what happened to me when she showed me those old sketches of Iron Man and Walter Payton and Fred Flintstone and Hulk Hogan. I found myself instantly transported back to a time where things were simpler and characters were real and the art was pure. I get a lot of really similar feelings when I look at the incredible art that Rob Schamberger has shared with 2 foreward us all. Rob’s passion for art and for professional wrestling struck me immediately as someone that has equally grown to love and appreciate both, and by Adam Pearce truth be told I am extremely jealous of his talents. -

James Rosario is a film critic, punk rocker, librarian, and life-long wrestling mark. He grew up in Moorhead, Minnesota/Fargo, North Dakota going to as many punk shows as possible and trying to convince everyone he met to watch his Japanese Death Match and ECW tapes with him. He lives in Asheville, North Carolina with his wife and two kids where he writes his blog, The Daily Orca. His favorite wrestlers are “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers, The Sheik, and Nick Bockwinkel. Art Fuentes lives in Orange County, Califonia and spends his days splashing ink behind the drawing board. One Punk’s Guide is a series of articles where Razorcake contributors share their love for a topic that is not traditionally considered punk. Previous Guides have explored everything from pinball, to African politics, to outlaw country music. Razorcake is a bi-monthly, Los Angeles-based fanzine that provides consistent coverage of do-it-yourself punk culture. Turluck Every year the LMSRF Grants-in-Aid Fund is assigned monies from the LMSRF Endowment Fund for distribution to LMSRF Individual Members and LMSRF Member sailing organizations to improve skills and competition of sailors in the Lake Michigan area by its Grants-in-Aid Committee. In 2017, $20,278.57 was assigned; to date $12,790.00 has been pledged or distributed. Funds that remain after December 31 are returned to the LMSRF Endowment Fund. We have funded individuals and teams to US and International Championships, individuals and teams to clinics, and Sailing Instructor scholarships. Applying for a grant is easy! Wrestling, Warships and Nationalism in Japanese-American Relations Martin J
Martin J. Meyer is a lecturer for school pedagogy and educational CONTRIBUTOR science at Vechta University, Germany. He is a founding member of the German Society of Sport Science’s Committee for Martial Arts Studies and the Journal of Martial Arts Research (JOMAR). In 2017, he received a scholarship from the Japan Society for the Promotion University, Japan. His main research interests are motives for martial time economy and prison rehabilitation programs, as well as basic research. Meyer DOI ABSTRACT The following article explains how the metaphors ‘wrestling 10.18573/mas.115 body’ and ‘warship’ are combined, mutually reinforced and nationalistically instrumentalised in the context of sporting events. Watching Championship Wrestling from Florida was a staple of life for many Floridians. The fans were both overt and closeted, but they all knew the flashy moves and big finishes. CWF became a top-rated statewide soap opera for the unwashed masses from the early 1950s to the late ’80s. Stars such as Eddie & Mike Graham, The Great Malenko, Buddy Colt, Jack & Jerry Brisco, Dory & Terry Funk, and Kurt & Karl Von Brauner, accompanied by their manager “Gentleman” Saul Weingroff, comprised the main attraction for a circus made up of high flyers and strongmen, heels and baby faces—and we were the stunned audience. Cowboy Luttrall drove the shows’ success. In the 1940s, his challenge of Joe Lewis to a boxer vs. wrestler match became his claim to fame. Lewis won, but Cowboy made a name for himself. The rest is history. Luttrall had an eye for talent, he quickly recruited legends such as Eddie Graham and his “brother” Dr. Jerry Graham, Hans Schmidt, Buddy “Killer” Austin, Ray Villmer, and one of the most hated combos in the history of the game—Kurt & Karl Von Brauner, the German Twins. World War II was not far removed from the memories of those attending the shows at venues such as Tampa’s Fort Homer Hesterly Armory.
