    These are dresses that are stitched with dreams: Struggle, Freedom and the Women of the Clothing and Textile Industry of the Western Cape Siona O’Connell Abstract The ordinary archive of the racially oppressed in South Africa offers a critical lens through which to interrogate notions of resistance, subjectivities and freedom. This paper considers these questions by examining the phenomenon that is the annual Spring Queen pageant which, for more than 46 years, has proffered a potential real-life ‘Cinderella’ experience to the poorly-paid, industrious women of the Western Cape’s clothing and textile trade. Initiated by their union, the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) in the late 1970s as a response to worker agitation, the social significance of the pageant runs incontrovertibly deeper than a one-night spectacle. Despite a dearth of subject-specific formal research, this paper draws on available literature analysing the impact of apartheid on culture and society in South Africa, along with extensive relevant media coverage of the Spring Queen pageant, and personal interviews with those involved and impacted. It goes beyond describing the experiences of working class ‘coloured’ women who contributed to the anti-apartheid struggle through their union activities. It also highlights how an enduring annual gala event has afforded the ‘invisible’ clothing production line workers who underpin a multi-billion rand South African export industry an opportunity to envision a yet-to-be realised freedom, while reflecting the power and resilience of the ordinary to transform in extraordinary times.     BC 1148 THE HW VAN DER MERWE PAPERS THE COLLECTION The HW van der Merwe Papers were presented to the University of Cape Town Libraries by Professor Hendrik van der Merwe, known as HW or Harvey, but for this paper he will be addressed as HW. The Collection consists of four sections, namely: 1. The personal papers of HW 2. The personal papers, with material related to ceramics, of Marietjie van der Merwe, who was a talented South African potter. 3. The extensive contribution towards a just peace and conflict resolution work carried out by the Abe Bailey Institute of Inter-racial Studies/ Centre for Intergroup Studies spanning a period of some twenty-five years while HW was Director. This section covers HW’s post-retirement interests from 1995 until he died in 2001. The main body of the Collection is consolidated in Section 3 and includes the Cillie Commission papers with submissions and reports. The Centre offered training, facilitation and mediation services in community and political conflict, organised many workshops on intergroup relations and training in the field of conflict management, negotiation and mediation. There were many projects, and Research Seminars held, plus work on conscientious objection, problems in the squatter camps, sanctions and boycotts, etc. There are extensive paper clippings and press coverage, plus a full set of papers and publications with a section on networking, which was an important part of the Centre’s work. Throughout his time as Director of the Centre, HW was very active as a Quaker within the Religious Society of Friends, so much of the work became intertwined with some of the issues he has dealing with on a day to day basis a the Centre.

Journal of Asian and African Studies, 52(8): 1065 – 1079 http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0021909616642793 Re-locating memories: transnational and local narratives of Indian South Africans in Cape Town Uma Dhupelia-Mesthrie Abstract This article plays on the word re-location to examine the memories of Indians in South Africa through oral histories about relocation as a result of the Group Areas Act, to memories of parents and grandparents relocating to South Africa from India as told to interviewees and to their own memories of journeys to India and back. The narratives of mobilities traverse time and national boundaries and are counter-posed by narratives of local mobilities as well as stasis. The article identifies ways of narrating, themes of narration and the meaning of memories while noting the re-location of memory construction against the backdrop of South Africa’s democratic transition and the 150th commemoration of the arrival of indentured Indians to South Africa. It argues that the local and the national are important in narrations of transnational journeys, thus advancing a particular approach to transnational memory studies. Introduction In 2010 the Kalusta Karjiker Education Society (KKES) in Cape Town held a glittering banquet to mark its 80th anniversary and the hall foyer was dominated by an image of Kalusta village in India located within Ratnagiri District. There were many side panels with photographs of families, past and present, from Kalusta. A magazine commemorating the transnational links between Muslims in Cape Town and Kalusta was given to each attendee.1 Its pages evoke the beauty of Kalusta through which the Washishti River flows and, mindful of the South African context, likens Kalusta to the scenic Knysna region in the Western Cape, which is blessed with forests, lakes and lagoons.

This national passion fot beauty contests ttaces its toots back to the 1920s and 1930s and ttanscends tace, class, and cultutal divisions. The populatity of non- commetcial beauty pageants thtoughout the countty signals that populat in- tetest extends fat beyond Miss South Africa and othet conventional contests. This study focuses on the histoty of the Spting Queen beauty festival in Cape Town's clothing industty: an exttaotdinaty festival of black^ female wotking- class cultute that hegan in 1980. "It's teally exciting and it's a lovely aftetnoon," temembeted Josie Atendse, a fotmet gatment wotket and shop stewatd; "when you watch and see all the people on the tamp and some of us just [laughs], you know, just fot the fun of it will entet. It's nice."^ By ptivileging the actions and petspectives of wotkets who expetienced the indignity of apattheid racism and eatned the lowest wages in the South Aftican clothing sectot,"* this atticle atgues that factory women putposefuUy ttansfotmed a seemingly banal and patriarchal beauty pageant into a cultutal ptoduction fot self-empowetment and trade union solidatity. The histotical significance of the Spting Queen is thteefold. Fitst, this lo- cal case study unveils a pootly documented yet intriguing aspect of the broader histoty and cultute of South Aftican women.

The Laingsburg disaster serves to remind man of nature's threat to man's existence. It also serves as a reminder that disasters do occur, and that :the accompanying destruction and trage~y are so profound that man cannot express it with his limited system of reference • . The flood added another page to the evergrowing chronicle of disaster, death and destruction. While events such as the Laingsburg disaster may be catalogued and then forgotten, to some the deep experience of pain remains indelibly inscribed on the parchment of human memory - a script that fades less easily.
