1. Indian Territory (between the Red and Canadian Rivers) and part of , showing the " Purchase of 1818." The area between the 98th and 100th meridian is claimed by the Wichitas. Compiled in 1917 from treaties and state maps. A blue ink on white paper, 21" x 33" map. Drawer 8614

2. Indian Territory: Arkansas border area in the vicinity of Ft. Smith. The land holdings (bordering on the railroad) of Dr. Payne, George and William Campbell, Mrs. Granklin, Mrs. Best, E. C. Boudinot, and McKibbon are shown. The western terminus of the Little Rock and Ft. Smith Railway is clearly indicated. A linen sheet hand drawn 15" x 28" map. Termed to be correct by G. W. Hughes, Chief Engineer (No date). Drawer 8626

3. Northeastern Indian Territory and Northwestern Arkansas: extends into Oklahoma to west of the Neosho River. In Arkansas the Old holdings from the Treaty of July 8, 1817 are marked off between the Arkansas and White Rivers. In Oklahoma the boundaries are outlined as of the Treaty of February 14, 1833. The and Strip are indicated. The Osages, , , Pawnees, and - Missouris are located immediately west of the . In , the Neutral Lands are indicated from the Treaty of December 29, 1835. 4. Indian Territory: A military map compiled under the direction of lst Lieut. E. H. Ruffner, Chief Engineer, Department of the , 1875. Indian Territory is quartered into the northwest, northeast, southeast and southwest quadrants. There are several copies of each quadrant, and three complete maps and several extra parts for the upper right and lower left quadrants. One series is probably a somewhat later period but all maps are quite similar. These are good terrain maps showing old trails, posts, and battles, and many old place names no longer used are evident. Camp Supply is located in the northwest quadrant and very little else. The northeast sector has several towns, missions, agencies and place names for creeks. The southeast is similar in content to the northeast, but contains an inset of the Camp Supply ground plan. The southwest quadrant shows and the route to . A ground plan of Fort Sill is included in an inset. The copies are black or blue on white and each quadrant measures 21" x 27". Drawer 8614

5. Cherokee Strip; Showing the lands leased by the Cherokee Strip Livestock Association from the Cherokee Nation. This map was compiled from surveys of Ranges made for the Association in 1883 by S. T. Wood, Fred Eckert, T. W. Walton and C. H. Burgess, and is believed to contain the best information accessible concerning the location of Ranches, Camps, Range Lines etc., on this lease. 7. Cherokee Nation; Showing the Territory originally assigned to the Cherokee Nation of Indians West of the (also the boundaries of the Territory now occupied or owned by them). Compiled by C. C. Royce in 1884 for the Bureau of Ethnology, J. W. Powell, Director. A 21" x 30" black and white map with the Indian lands shown in colors. A numeric and chronological schedule of cessions is included. 9. Choctaw Nation; Map of the Timber Lands (of the) Choctaw Nation. Prepared in the Office of the Commissioner to the Five Civilized Tribes. Published in Muskogee, 1913. 11. Osage ; Interior Department map compiled and drawn by D. E. Coon, 1911. A 30" x 40" black and white map showing towns, railroads, creeks, townships and sections. Also telephone and pipelines are shown. The map has been hand colored to reveal the Foster Leases (red) and leases approved later (blue). Torn and very brittle. Drawer 8614

15. Indian Territory: General Land Office map compiled from official records by H. King, 1899. A two tones 20" x 22" map. A very good map of showing towns, railroads, creeks, townships, and sections. Many old towns no longer existing or existing now under different names are present. Three copies, two are in excellent condition. The third copy is faded and is cloth backed. Drawer 8614

16. Indian Territory: U.S.G.S. map directed by C. S. Fitch, 1895-1899. A two-toned 31" x 33" map containing railroads, towns, rivers and townships as well as topographical information. Three copies, one is cloth-backed in good condition and another is badly torn. The third copy is a positive reproduction and is beginning to tear. Drawer 8614

19. Indian and Oklahoma Territories: 1890 map showing the boundary designation between the two territories. The Indian Nations and Reservations are the same as in the preceding map. This map shows the routes of thirteen railroads and gives the date each was authorized by Congress. Total area in square miles is given for each Reservation and Indian Nation. Same size and color as the previous map. This map is taped to cardboard and has a photo negative with it. (A photograph copy is available, see 2-38). Drawer 8614

20. Indian Territory: 1887 General Land Office map from the Department of the Interior. A negative 24" x 32" map showing military and Indian Reservations. The western half of the state shows township surveying and considerable drainage. Several railroads cross the territory on a generally north-south line. 23. Indian Territory: General Land Office map compiled from official records by C. Roeser, 1879. A colored 24" x 32" map showing the location of Indian tribes and reservations. A single railroad, the St. Louis & San Francisco crosses the eastern portion of the state from Vinita in the Cherokee Nation to Colbert's Station, opposite Denison, , in the Chickasaw Nation. Several schools, agencies, towns and forts are shown. More than half of the western portion of the territory shows survey lines. Extremely poor condition for the colored copy. A second two-toned copy is cloth backed and in excellent shape. Drawer 8614

25. Indian Territory: An Illustrated Map of the Oklahoma Country or the Indian Territory West of Arkansas. Copyrighted in 1939 by V. Lackey in Tulsa. A 12" x 24" brown toned pictographic map of important places and events in Oklahoma history. Contains a legend. Drawer 8626

26. Indian Territory. A 65" x 30" contour map of the Custer Battlefield. This map is an enlargement of the Montana Custer Battlefield made in 1891 by R.B. Marshall. Produced in 1968, contains: rivers, ridges, battle monuments, creek, and grave markers. Has a legend. Drawer 8614

32. Falls of the Verdigris, The Three Forks Country Birth Spot of Oklahoma History. Pictographic map compiled from archaeological, topographical and historical field notes. Chouteau's Post (Three Forks) opposite Col. Hugh Louis Post, Osage Agency, Creek towns, Seaborne Hill's Post, roads, individual home sites and Indian graves are shown. Also seen are numerous "crossings" and steamboat landings. French Point where French traders from Arkansas came to trade with the Indians. A large blue and white 33" x 66" map. (Two copies). A third smaller copy, 17" x 17" is a duplicate of the top half of the larger map. One of the larger maps is torn into two pieces. Drawer 8614

34. Butterfield Trail: the Overland Mail Route 1858-1861. Shows the portion of the trail that crossed the southeastern corner of Oklahoma. From Ft. Smith to Denison, Texas. The twelve way stations are marked and named, along with other prominent features along the trail. Prepared by Muriel Wright and George Shirk and published by the Oklahoma Historical Society in 1958. 35. "A Pasture Map of the Kansas and Osage Res." Survey and plotted under the direction of G. B. Tray, Special U. S. . The reservation is surveyed into townships and sections. A historical map noting places and events of significance such as battles, forts, trails, settlements, treaties, tribal lands and events of prominent individuals. Map Collection #2: Indian Territory

The map shows locations of outfitting points into Oklahoma reached by the Missouri, Pacific and Iron Mountain Lines, which includes routes through Missouri, Arkansas, , and Kansas. The panhandle is still designated Beaver County. In addition, the map notes lands designated in the Peel Bill to be opened by Presidential Proclamation, open lands for settlement in Oklahoma Territory and lands not opened. Also Indian Territory, tribal lands, cities, roads and trails are shown. 1889. (Two copies). Drawer 8626

58. "Map of the Indian Territory Showing the Tracts of Land of the Osage, Creek, Cherokee, Seminole, Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations". Between the towns, nations and forts are shown the principal roads, compiled from U. S. Surveys and information from Indian Chiefs. Dated 1867. Several old trading stores are located and identified. 59. "Indian Territory and Texas, Northwest Portion". 1874 Asher and Adams map. South of the Red River, Texas shows counties. The is the "Hunting Ground" of the Kiowa and Comanche Indians. The is "Public Land". Eastern Indian Territory is filled by the Chickasaw and Choctaw "Nations", the Creek "Country" and the Cherokee "Reservation". West of the Indian meridian are the "Ceded Lands", and the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Reservations. The , , and Cherokees all have ceded lands in the west. A colored 16" x 23" map. (torn and taped). The map also shows roads, cattle trails, towns, stage roads and railroads. Drawer 8626

60. Xerox copy of "Gray's Atlas Map of Indian Territory". Dated 1872. The MKT railroad crosses the eastern portion of Indian Territory. Agencies, academies, villages, Indian tribes and military posts and routes are located and identified. A 12" x 15" black and white copy. Drawer 8626

61. "Map of Indian Territory". Compiled by G. W. Ingalls, U. S. Indian Agent in 1875. Based on reports from the General Land Office and from the War Department surveys of E. W. Darling in 1872. Ceded lands, proposed railroad routes, agencies, forts and trails are shown, besides identifying the Indian Reservations. An 18" x 24" map. Two copies, one negative and one positive. 62. "Indian Territory". All of Oklahoma except the panhandle is shown. There are 19 Indian "nations", "reservations", and "countries". An 11" x 14" colored map by Mitchell, dated 1879. This map is very similar to Map No. 30 in Morris' and McReynolds' Historical Atlas of Oklahoma. "Ockmulgee" is the territorial capitol. In each tribal area is a dated reference to the treaty, agreement, or executive order which established that area. Topography is shown in great detail and the coverage of forts, agencies, towns, and Indian academies is excellent. Two 1879 copies, and a third issue dated 1884 is identical. Drawer 8626

63. Indian Territory. A 12" x 19" color map identical to #62 above, but with additions of the Nez Perce, Ponca, & "Missourias", Iowas and Kickapoo lands. The map is well detailed showing river systems, landforms, trails, military roads, cattle trails, railroads, forts, agencies, and towns. Bradley. 1886. Drawer 8626

64. Indian Territory. A 11" x 14" color map compiled from the official records of the General Land Office for the Department of the Interior by G. P. Strum and created to accompany "Public Domain" by Thomas Donaldson. Almost identical to the above map except for the coloring. Map shows river systems, townships, capitals of nations, towns and villages, military reservations, roads and trails, and Indian lands. (Poor condition with excessive taping). 1883. Drawer 8626

65. Indian Territory. A 13" x 20" map taken from "Rand McNally & Company's Indexed Atlas Of The World" showing tribal lands, towns, rivers, railroads, forts, and counties and towns of adjacent states. The index provides information on railroads in the Territory, a historical description, a diagram showing the relative strength of religious denominations, climate and soil conditions, acreage surveyed by Indian government agencies, tribal populations, agricultural statistics and stock returns. 1882. 67. Indian Territory. Geo. F. Cram Engraver and Publisher of Chicago. The date 1885 is penciled on the margin. A multicolored 9" x 11" map showing 22 Indian nations, counties and reservations. The panhandle is "Public Lands". The southwestern corner of the area is labeled simply "Greer". The central portion of the state is labeled "Oklohoma Country". Two railroads exist in the eastern half of the area. Drawer 8626

69. Indian Territory. A 10" x 12" color map similar to #67 and #68 but with different coloring and engraved for The People's Publishing Co. of Chicago, Ill. A 22" x 26" black on white Library of Congress reproduction entitled "Map of the Following Reservations, Iowas, Sac and Fox, Kickapoos and Pottawatomies, Also Eastern Half of Oklahoma". The map is well detailed and shows townships, towns, roads, rail lines, roads, creeks and rivers, Cleveland, Oklahoma, Logan and Payne counties, ranches, missions, agencies and timber reserves. 294a-d. Indian Territory. Four sections (each is 30” x 26 ½”) of a black and white map, titled, “Military Map of the Indian Territory, Compiled Under the Direction of 1st Lieut. E. H. Ruffner, Engineers. Department of the Missouri.” [Washington, D.C.: Corps of Engineers, 1875]. These maps were prepared by the War Department to be carried by military officers in the field during the Plains Indian Wars. The set includes two inset ground plans for Camp Supply and Fort Sill. Maps show waterways and land formations; places and dates of Indian battles; trading posts and camps/homes of Native Americans; cattle trails, stage stations and roads; Indian agencies and other settlements including one of African-Americans near Fort Arbuckle. SE section is missing a piece from the SW corner, but is replaced by facsimile. Maps are numbered 294a, b, c, d. Drawer 8625.
