The Puna Is Expressed in Three Words: Earth, Salt and Sky. It Is a High Plateau, Located at More Than 3,500 Meters Above Sea SALTA: OVERLANDING AND HIKING IN THE HIGH PUNA 3 days – October 13 – 15, 2017 The Puna is expressed in three words: earth, salt and sky. It is a high plateau, located at more than 3,500 meters above sea level (11,483’), where there are eternal snow-covered peaks, black volcanoes, vast salt flats, lagoons full of flamingo and vicunas that blend into the deserted landscape. We offer a mystical journey to the heart of the Puna of Salta, where we visit charming towns, are in touch with Andean communities, eat at the dining rooms of local families, see authentic craftspeople and stroll around different protected natural areas. People here have preserved ancestral customs such as the Pachamama, the misachicos, the apacheta, and the “coqueo” habit, among others. This tourist corridor is characterized by its large number of artisans, weavers, small producers of cheese and sweets, as well as by the breeding of goats, llamas and sheep in the mountains of the area. Trip Highlights: • World heritage: “Tastil” the best preserved archaeological site in northern Argentina • See the route of the most famous railway, “The Train to the Clouds” • The largest Salt Flat in Argentina: “Arizaro” • The oldest living beings on the planet: The “STROMATOLITES” in the Eyes of Sea of Tolar Grande • The Highest archaeological site in the world: The “Llullaillaco Volcano” 6,739 m.a.s.l. • The aboriginal population more numbers from all over the Puna: the “Kollas“ • The most colorful deserts as “the desert of the Devil” • A natural almost perfect pyramid: “The Cone of Arita” The towns: SAN ANTONIO DE LOS COBRES (3775 m.a.s.l.) San Antonio de los Cobres is a town with a mining origin. Currently, it is the most developed town in the tourist corridor as it offers all the services of a city. TOLAR GRANDE (3520 m.a.s.l.): It is immersed in the Puna desert, surrounded by the most significant volcanoes of the province such as the Llullaillaco, the Socompa, the Arizaro, the Aracar and the Guanaquero. ITINERARY October 12 – Day 0: Arrive in Salta, Argentina anytime today. (Hotel not included) October 13 - Day 1: Our trip beings today in Salta, Argentina with a pick up at 7:30am from the hotel in Salta (1187 m.a.s.l.). Next, we stop at San Antonio de los Cobres (3775 m.a.s.l.), the former mining town. After lunch, we set off to cross the “Abra de Alto Chorrillos,” a high pass at 4,560 masl/14,960’. We visit the small town of Olacapato, one of the highest in Argentina and the desolate Salar de Pocitos. We take some time to walk and photograph in the “Desierto del Diablo,” a spectacular and infinite reddish plain surrounded by the hills that make up this unique landscape. We arrive at Tolar Grande (3520 m.a.s.l.) in the afternoon. Dinner and accommodation. • The South American Indian As a Pioneer Alpinist
TI-lE SOUTH AMERICAN INDIAN AS A PIONEER ALPINIST 81 THE SOUTH AMERICAN INDIAN AS A PIONEER ALPINIST BY EVELIO ECHEVARRfA C. ECENTL Y it has become kno\vn that a number of very high Andean mountain tops had not only been ascended but also permanently occupied by the Indians, possibly as much as three centuries before de Saussure's ascent of Mont Blanc. They climbed peaks of up to 22,ooo ft., they constructed shelters on or near their tops, and they used the high places as watch-towers or as sacrificial shrines. Some authorities believe that this activity took place as early as the late four teenth century, though we cannot prove that some of it did not take place long after, possibly as late as the nineteenth century. These Indian accomplishments have been left unmentioned in practi cally all mountaineering history books. In this article, which may be the first to attempt a comprehensive survey,1 my purpose is to review briefly the location and the nature of each discovery. The area in which these Indian mountain ascents took place is what in physical geography is known as the Atacama desert (although this name is nowadays used in political and cultural geography for a much more restricted area). It is a treeless, sandy and volcanic waste-land seldom visited by mountaineers. It stretches from the neighbourhood of Arequipa, in Peru, as far south as Elqui in Chile; to the east it reaches the Andean slopes that face the jungles of Argentina and Bolivia, and to the west, the Pacific Ocean.

Volumen 43, Nº 2, 2011.

  • Ascensos a Las Cimas De Los Volcanes Rosado, Mellado Y Socompa Caipis
Cuadernos Universitarios. PUNA DE ATACAMA THE HIGH DESERTS OF ARGENTINA 30 JAN – 11 FEB 2022 20 MAR – 1 APR 2022 Ignacio Palacios – Marsel van Oosten – Daniella Sibbing ATACAMA-PUNA REGION This place will take your breath away – and not just because of the elevation. The Puna de Atacama is a high desert plateau located in a remote corner of northern Argentina that contains some of the most incredible desert scenery in the world. Surreal rock formations, high deserts, massive sand dunes, endless salt pans, dramatic mountains, volcanoes, lava fields, cinder cones, and turquoise-colored pools. The region corresponds to the Altiplano-Puna, extending from Peru, going through Bolivia and ending in the northwest of Argentina. 2 3 PUNA ARGENTINA “La Puna Argentina” is a natural prolongation of the Bolivian highlands, with which it also differs because Bolivia has a high open plateau, while the Puna region of Argentina is fractured internally by mountain ranges and depressions. The Andean compression at these latitudes, has produced a series of longitudinal blocks: the high ones have given rise to mountain ranges, while those who fell are now large areas of depressions. The lateral portions of the Andean volcanic arc cross the plateau from northeast to southeast, giving rise to closed areas, where the famous Andean salt lakes are found. 4 5 Joining this tour will give you the opportunity PUNA DE to discover some of the most remarkable ATACAMA landscapes in Argentina. We will cover all the iconic locations for landscape photography at the right times of day with the best light, but we will also enjoy the culture of the region.

Puna Total: Tolar Grande – Galan Volcano – Pumice Stone Field Argentina Besides the Yungas jungle on the eastern fringe of the region, the only fertile lands are those near the river basins, which have been irrigated extensively. Across millennia the erosive forces of these rivers has gradually created a multitude of red-rock canyons, such as the Quebrada de Humahuaca and the Valles Calchaquíes. West of these valleys the peaks of the Andes reach heights of over 6,000 metres (20,000 ft) and the Altiplano, an extensive 3,500-meter high plateau, dominates the landscape and continues far north into Bolivia and Southern Peru. The climate and what to pack in the suitcase Northwest Argentina is predominantly dry and hot and classified as subtropical. Owing to its rugged topography, the region is climatically diverse, depending on the altitude, temperature and distribution of precipitation. Consequentially, the vegetation will differ at these different climate types. In general, the climate can be divided into 2 main types: a cold arid or semi-arid climate at the higher altitudes and warmer subtropical climate in the eastern parts of the region. Under the Köppen climate classification, the region has 5 different climate types which are semi–arid (BS), arid (BW), temperate climate without a dry season and with a dry season (Cf and CWrespectively) and an alpine climate at the highest altitudes.
