    Women as Rhetorical Agents of Peace in South Africa. “Open Arms and Tongues of Steel” Prepared by: Ruvimbo N. Goredema Research Assistant 1 INTRODUCTION This Working Paper seeks to investigate how women are both perceived and how they represent themselves as agents of reconciliation. Much of the basis of analysis will come from how women in South Africa experience public life. It is at this point that I would like to highlight that it is nearly impossible to separate the ideas of how women experience the public sphere from the ideas of gender analysis and feminism within an African framework. The Feminist Movement will be briefly addressed as it is a key agent in many instances that has enabled many women to participate in South African public discourse. However, the African feminist movement works in many ways differently to that of the West (the deemed source of this movement). This is because of colonialism and the role that African culture plays in these women’s lives. This is not to say that there are no lines of similarity but it is to emphasise that in a newly democratic South Africa, there are extenuating factors that shape how this rhetorical experience is perceived and executed. By highlighting the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) report, the role of the Rain Queen and the Reed’s Dance in Zulu culture and process of female circumcision in Basotho culture, we aim to illustrate how women help or in fact hinder reconciliation, and how they challenge the notion that they embody a “kinder” way of doing public life.

As if by her own design, Mama Winnie’s last act of defiance was, and will continue to be, against the brutal laws of a system under which she had known all the pain possible that a human can endure. She sought to reverse the historical perversion by colonial authorities of customary law to women’s land rights. Up to her last breath Mama Winnie firmly believed that women’s equal rights to land, housing and property are human rights that should be upheld by the courts of this land. It is no wonder that some of the townships and informal settlements around the country are named after this remarkable African woman. At the height of the colonial and apartheid regimes the deliberate distortion and codification of African customary laws and systems, as clearly demonstrated in the 1913 Native Land Act, became the anchor strategy for the colonial imperialists to plunder the African land and its vast resources. In his book The Wretched of the Earth, Frantz Fanon makes an inalienable connection between the colonised people and the question of the land.

The museum, like many others in South Africa, was founded by a lone man and was animated by a colonial collecting ethic that had become deeply unfashionable post-apartheid. Indeed, the literature shows a radical shift in museum collecting practices that has seen “source communities” becoming involved in and laying claim to their ethnic heritage in such ethnology collections. Contrary to this trend, the Aranya Museum held little interest for the museum’s “source communities” who expressed no intention to appropriate or reclaim ‘their’ indigenous artefacts.
