North Port Lodge No. 406 F.& A.M From the West View from the West: Greetings Brethren! The Dog Days of Summer are upon us, but the end is in sight. Generally, traffic is light, check-out lines in stores are shorter and for those of us who frequent our fine local eating establishments, waiting times are short. Enjoy it while you can, snowbird season is just a few weeks ahead. Congratulations to our two newest Entered Apprentices, Brothers Todd Boynton and Christopher McNeil. Holding degrees in our current facility is difficult, even in the large room. A big "Thank You" to the Brothers who stepped up and made this happen. We have two more candidates standing by for initiation, so we will be scheduling another EA degree before our Fellowcraft degree so be ready once again on short notice. Speaking of degree work, Our Worshipful Master, Junior Warden and I have had several discussions concerning Ritual, physical shortcomings of our current facility, and our upcoming election of officers. First, there have been rumors floating about the district that North Port Lodge is considering moving our stated communications to Punta Gorda Lodge #115's temple. This is absolutely not true, and if it is someone in our Lodge making these statements or even insinuating that this is the case STOP! Making this type of statement intentionally or not, is detrimental to the harmony of the Lodge and to both the 27th and 28th District.

See www.pickyourown.org/alllaboutcanning.htm for many other canning directions and recipes How to Make Homemade Apple Butter You think making and canning your own apple butter is difficult? Well, it used to be! Until crock pots and slow cookers came along! Now, it's easy! Here's how to do it, complete instructions in easy steps and completely illustrated. The apple butter will taste MUCH better than anything you've ever had from a store. Prepared this way, the jars have a shelf life of 18 months to 2 years, and require no special attention. A side benefit is that your house will smell wonderful while it is cooking - much better than potpourri! Ingredients and Equipment Yields about 9 - 10 pints 9 quarts of Applesauce (See step 1 and 2) 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon of allspice 4 cups sugar Jar grabber (to pick up the hot jars) Lid lifter (has a magnet to pick the lids out of the boiling water where you sterilize them. • Mapping Topographies in the Anglo and German Narratives of Joseph Conrad, Anna Seghers, James Joyce, and Uwe Johnson
MAPPING TOPOGRAPHIES IN THE ANGLO AND GERMAN NARRATIVES OF JOSEPH CONRAD, ANNA SEGHERS, JAMES JOYCE, AND UWE JOHNSON DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kristy Rickards Boney, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by: Professor Helen Fehervary, Advisor Professor John Davidson Professor Jessica Prinz Advisor Graduate Program in Professor Alexander Stephan Germanic Languages and Literatures Copyright by Kristy Rickards Boney 2006 ABSTRACT While the “space” of modernism is traditionally associated with the metropolis, this approach leaves unaddressed a significant body of work that stresses non-urban settings. Rather than simply assuming these spaces to be the opposite of the modern city, my project rejects the empty term space and instead examines topographies, literally meaning the writing of place. Less an examination of passive settings, the study of topography in modernism explores the action of creating spaces—either real or fictional which intersect with a variety of cultural, social, historical, and often political reverberations. The combination of charged elements coalesce and form a strong visual, corporeal, and sensory-filled topography that becomes integral to understanding not only the text and its importance beyond literary studies. My study pairs four modernists—two writing in German and two in English: Joseph Conrad and Anna Seghers and James Joyce and Uwe Johnson. All writers, having experienced displacement through exile, used topographies in their narratives to illustrate not only their understanding of history and humanity, but they also wrote narratives which concerned a larger global ii community.
